I know them both, and "Doc" Wright pretty well. Both are competent and sincerely good people.

 

(I think they're up to 9 core divisions now)

 

There are other test to determine what your natural tendancies are for swing plane, lead and trail grips, pivot axis, stance, et al.

 

The key being that parts match up for best results when you're not trying to swing against your natural, biological tendancies.

 

When it comes to being a launcher, spinner or glider, you can't be partially one and partially another.

 

Everyone's hands are rising at impact.

 

To be a glider, you need to have a rear pivot. If you pivoting around your rear hip, and it's not how you tested, you're going to hit it fat. (sound familiar?) And you need to be an under grip with the trail hand. If you aren't that naturally, you're doomed to matchups that will not let you be the ball striker you could be.

 

You need all of the tests to really understand the matchups that will work for you.

 

I've done this and seen it over and over.

 

When you find the results and change to match you results, you'll see an immediate difference. I've seen people gain 8 mph or more in one swing with better impact and compression.

Well it MAY be official after tomorrow afternoon. I have a guy coming over to buy a lot of my stuff---- I have too much stuff. Ran out of room in the shop the front bedroom and the storage building across the street. I am keeping the TM TP CBs the Machogans and both sets of FC-4000s. I am only keeping maybe 5 putters and all my 588 and Ping wedges. We may be moving when my accident settles--- I have a deposition with my lawyers Monday and then a appointment with the Doctor on Tuesday--- Talked to my lawyer today and they may settle out of court. Depends on what I end up with money wise--- I may stay here and buy a new trailer or we may bug out--- Anyhow I am not giving up golf just gotta thin the heard and this presents a good opportunity

(Bradley also demonstrates a fair amount of spin later in the downswing. He’s technically a glider-spinner. Combos are common).

 

This comment from the pdf file Divot License posted. I take it that this was an early determination

and later on y'all determined that combos of any of the 3 are not good or not possible?

Pretty definite glider -- big wingspread.  I would confirm that I'm flatter than ideal, always have been.

 

Not sure of the fixes, but maybe further impetus to get a lesson or two this season.

Yeah, I shouldn't have been so dogmatic. Everyone has a component (no matter how small) of all three. Trying to maximize all three is not a goal. Find your primary move and maximize that.

 

We all start the downswing with some glide, then some spin, then some launch. The right hand is really important in all this. For example, Dustin Johnson has a strong right hand grip and has very little launch - he's all spin. On the other hand, Justin Thomas has an on top grip and is max launcher - off the ground.

 

Both would be more poor ball strikers if they tried to do the opposite.

The idea of you being dogmatic never crossed my mind. I was just wondering if the thinking

had evolved since you had previously mentioned adapting as more/new information became

available.

 

When I was on the road I had the radio dial set to PGA Tour radio pretty much all the time. I

was able to listen to so many people in the game that after awhile I felt like I knew many of

them. One thing that impressed me was how fast information was coming in many fields

related to golf, and in golf itself.

 

Yet, there is a growing number of golfers who like the old school way of doing things....and

playing with old school equipment to one degree or another and prefer the romance of golf,

walking, shaping shots, being an artist.

 

I see you as existing in both worlds based on things you have said here.  I have heard Tad

Moore on the radio literally talk former tour players into playing hickories. From what I

understand he makes some very cool clubs apart from his putter business....or at least he 

did as I have not listened to the radio for a few years now.

 

I have come across some dogmatic people here at WRX. I'm guilty of it at times. You're not

Yep Tad Moore makes some great stuff but you better get your billfold out. Nice stuff but expensive. In the past I had enterained the thought of playing in some Hickory events, Sat down and figured it out. It would have cost me more to do all of that than hooking back up on the minis in the Super Senior division. Even at the stage of life before I was hurt I did not want to commit to the practice required to play competetive golf. I do have some original Hickory stuff. Before I was hurt I did hit some of it on the range from time to time but now I shudder at the thought of swinging those heavy stiff hickory shafts now. LOL the Hickory stuff may be going today too

Tough day on the course today, especially for DW.  I think she may have had a bit of heat stroke.  Hard to say.  She wasn't faint, but overheated and pounding headache.  She gets a lot of headaches so I wouldn't read anything into that.  Still paramedics were called into assist another woman when we first arrived.

 

As you can imagine, it was a hot one!  But more so than the heat was the humidity which was running >90%!!

 

One of my better ball striking days, but couldn't convert squat as the flat stick was cold.

 

WE finally met the couple we are supposed to be playing with.  Very nice couple and they are just walking 9's as well.  A decent day for all except for DW's issues with the weather affecting her.

Hydration prior to and during are the key for the "swamp weather". Sipping on Pedialyte is the best remedy I have found to combat dehydration, especially afterwards. It will help her with the headache and facilitate faster recovery.

We probably should be riding,  even for 9, especially in hot weather.

So, since I am a Glider I figure I'll embrace it and see what happens next time I hit balls.  I most

definitely have an "under" right arm and I tried gripping a club with my right (trail) hand more

under the grip and took a few mock swings and it actually felt better than I thought it would.

No idea if you can purchase it in America but for hydration in Australia we use coconut water, good taste and does a brilliant job

Yep I have done Pedialyte for years too---- Learned about it back in my VFD days. Took a course on hydration and health one year learned a lot--- I came in handy during my racing days too-- Back when I was racing I use to hydrate myself 3 or 4 days in advance. In a Firesuit with fireproof long johns you can sweat out quite a bit on a Saturday night feature- I used to lose between 5 to 7 lbs a night. I still drink lots of water because as humid as it is now I sweat like a race horse and my BP meds have a dieuretic in it so I pee a lot to be frank. I have only been dehydrated and passed out one time and that was in the Fire Department. When I woke up I was in the ambulance with a IV stuck in me. In fact the Doc that tended to me that day in the hospital taught the hydration course a few weeks later.

Mike is #2 in the world, right behind Butch Harmon in all of the rankings.

 

The tests have been a work in progress for a long time and have been updated as more is learned. One of the great things about Mike is his ability to accept and adapt when facts are better known and measurements confirm new understandings.

I second this. I looked online and not much to be found. Watched a short video trailer. Funny, there

was a link to a GolfWRX thread about this from 2017. The link took me to I and A, of course, where

the thread was................well, you can read for yourself and see why so many of us have long ago

stopped visiting I and A.

@Conrad1953These are two videos I have found online that explain with some detail what Mike teaches. First video is a webinar breaking down the basic testing elements, second video is from a group class he gave and focus' on his teaching two identical twins who measured for very different swings. Second video may not improve anyone's game but is interesting viewing and shows how unique each persons swing can and should be.

Wifey and I tested each other, I then introduced the idea to the assistant pro at my club (this was during my last lesson lol) and since have tested several of my golfing buddies (all single figure golfers)

 

One close friend has really bought into the idea and is trying to figure out how he can implement the changes required by the tests. 

 

I personally tested as almost a pure glider. I've always felt most comfortable with a "stronger/under" grip but constant coaching has had me working away from that. I've always moved off the ball into my right leg on the backswing but again modern swing theory and coaching has tried to have me stay centered over the ball. I've taken the testing as license to follow these more "natural/comfortable" motions and while I wouldn't say my game has dramatically improved it has become more steady. I'm more confident on tight holes to pull driver and find it much easier to swing, hit it straight and probably most importantly, my body isn't feeling tired/sore/stiff after 18 holes of golf. 

 

Wife recorded the below swing the other day and you can really see the glider elements bleeding back into my swing. "strong/under" right hand grip, lateral shifting in the swing, forward/driving right elbow on the down swing, My launch element is very low and the spin element doesn't kick in till late on the downswing.

@Divot License, thanks for posting these videos and your comments. I've gotta run some 

errands but want to get more in depth with this later. I had pretty much sold myself on

staying off the golf course until after my hip replacement but that has been delayed until

July most likely. It isn't like I can hurt my hip any more than it is already, lol, so I think I

may go limp around at the range, when the rain stops, and check this out.

 

I think I have also been fighting against my natural tendencies......when I played baseball

as a kid I naturally threw sidearm but was told that was a no no and was told to change

to overhand, which never felt good to me......but that was the prevailing wisdom.....and

then here comes the great sidearm pitchers in MLB.......... and then it was OK.

 

I'm not equating that to the golf swing except to say that I would like to swing a golf club

in a way that is most natural for me and, I would think, less injurious......and hopefully bring

more power and consistency to my ball striking. In a way I realize now that I've been

contorting myself trying to match up unmatchable things in my golf setup and swing.

The second video was in Melbourne, Australia. Actually there is a lot to learn from it. First, you need to do all of the tests, not just some of them. Whatever you test at is what you are - embrace it, don't fight it. You need to match all of the test results. Your trail hand grip determines your release. Is it a corner release, an extension release, etc.? Hold you right hand open on the grip and go the impact position, then slowly push the right hand past impact and watch where the club naturally wants to travel.

 

It's great to hear that your body is reacting better to playing.

 

BTW, as an under grip golfer, you can tuck the right elbow. The side on or on top should not tuck. You can definitely tuck and get the left arm above the right at impact. Knowing all of your test results will help... Pivot, forearm to upper arm, wingspan to height, hip speed test.

Hey bud seriously that can happen as I have too much stuff still---- I sold 10 sets of irons and probably 20 wedges and 6 modern drivers along with 25 putters and the shop is a worse mess. My wife saw what I sold and said if she did not know better she would not have thought I had not gotten rid of anything. FTR truthfully she has not gotten on me about the stuff. It had been in the plans to downsize when I retired but then I got hurt. So these plans have been on the back burner for over a year. So PM me with what you want and we can work it out free because I would rather see the stuff played than sitting around rusting up. Yep gotta get the shop cleaned out where I can work

Yep I remember those days someone actually called me an idiot and said I was backwards. I could play a little bit back in those days and still gambled. I told the guy to bring his clubs and billfold stacked with money down here. Never has showed up to this day. In those days I would have sent him packing because I was a hustler and could make a game I might add to my advantage before I teed off. Like I have said many times there is no one etched in stone way to properly swing or play this game---- Like I have said also Stu golf is ugly even when playing good and scoring good. LOL good example last week in the Scramble our 3rd hole is a sorta decieving par 3 that yardage wise plays about 165 but in reality plays longer. Last week it was sorta wet and the wind blowing. usually in my weak state ( do not laugh ) I play a 5 iron or a high cut 7 wood. last week the wind was blowing like heck because we are 2 miles off the ocean. I told my partners one of them my bud Bear this is going to be ugly. I proceeded to hit a choked down 1 iron with a hold off cut about d**k high as one guy puts it. Ran it up on the green to about 20 ft. Was the only one in the group that hit the green. One of the guys made the putt. Yep I never considered myself a ball striker but a shot maker or inventive. Yep right or wrong I play golf my way

My test results for the 5 basic tests were:

 

Height: 71 inches

Wingspan: 72 inches

More under than side under grip but not full under.

I actually went to the range with my brother at the weekend (he hasn't hit a golf ball in about 10 years) and he remarked "it's interesting to see your swing hasn't changed since the old days". I thought this amazing as over the past few weeks I've been letting my body work towards these natural/test driven motions and they appear to produce a swing reminiscent of my glory days.

Had an interesting Scratch League match tonight. 

 

My partner and I played were paired against two kids from the other club. Their handicaps were +1 and +3 apparently. They had also returned to the UK last year after spending 3 years at college in Florida on golf scholarships. 

 

We beat them 1 up in the end although it was not smooth sailing. We were 2 up with 4 holes to play. My partner blocks his tee shot right into trees on the reachable par 5. Although the lie was not good I had room for a full swing (format is foursomes) and a wide open window to the green with a 5 iron. I then proceeded to hit 2 inchs behind the ball and use the turf I dug up to advance the ball 20 yards back to the fairway. They hit green in two and 2 putted for a birdie to beat our par. 

 

My nightmare continued on the 16th tee were I pushed my drive slightly (first cut) but found what looked like a hole about 8 inches deep and a foot across. With no obvious reason for it (animals, machine tracks etc) we decided our only option was an unplayable however due to the location the next shot meant that tree branches were in play for the next shot.  Needless to say we lost this hole.

 

Having lost 2 holes on the trot and back to all square with 2 to play, my partner stepped up and crushed his drive comfortably over 300 yards. He left me a lovely 90 yard wedge which I got to 8 feet. One putt later we had won the hole and I had to step onto the final hole (a short par 3) and not mess it up. 

 

Thankfully I put a good swing on it and it came to rest 12ish feet from the pin. One lag putt and a gimme later and we had won the match. 

 

Walking off my partner was quick to discuss with me how unimpressive the kids games were for their handicap and that although they played at an "easy" course he was expecting a little more from them due to their reputation. 

 

So far in the league on a personal level i am 3 wins from 4 but the team is 4 wins from 4. Were top of the league with two matches to play.

Thanks Stu but I still reach for the ball a little too much. It's a bad habit and when over done can cause some very nasty results. Slowly but surely the ball is creeping a little closer to me at address.

Is elbow to forearm longer, shorter or equal to shoulder socket to elbow? Kind of tricky to find the shoulder socket. Start on top of shoulder and slide finger over the top to the arm and there is a slight depression just below the top.

 

Can you do the right hand grip test and have your wife take a photo from face on?

 

This will help refine the blueprint for you...
