Had an interesting Scratch League match tonight. 

 

My partner and I played were paired against two kids from the other club. Their handicaps were +1 and +3 apparently. They had also returned to the UK last year after spending 3 years at college in Florida on golf scholarships. 

 

We beat them 1 up in the end although it was not smooth sailing. We were 2 up with 4 holes to play. My partner blocks his tee shot right into trees on the reachable par 5. Although the lie was not good I had room for a full swing (format is foursomes) and a wide open window to the green with a 5 iron. I then proceeded to hit 2 inchs behind the ball and use the turf I dug up to advance the ball 20 yards back to the fairway. They hit green in two and 2 putted for a birdie to beat our par. 

 

My nightmare continued on the 16th tee were I pushed my drive slightly (first cut) but found what looked like a hole about 8 inches deep and a foot across. With no obvious reason for it (animals, machine tracks etc) we decided our only option was an unplayable however due to the location the next shot meant that tree branches were in play for the next shot.  Needless to say we lost this hole.

 

Having lost 2 holes on the trot and back to all square with 2 to play, my partner stepped up and crushed his drive comfortably over 300 yards. He left me a lovely 90 yard wedge which I got to 8 feet. One putt later we had won the hole and I had to step onto the final hole (a short par 3) and not mess it up. 

 

Thankfully I put a good swing on it and it came to rest 12ish feet from the pin. One lag putt and a gimme later and we had won the match. 

 

Walking off my partner was quick to discuss with me how unimpressive the kids games were for their handicap and that although they played at an "easy" course he was expecting a little more from them due to their reputation. 

 

So far in the league on a personal level i am 3 wins from 4 but the team is 4 wins from 4. Were top of the league with two matches to play. 

I will say impressive but I will also say that you and your partner know how to golf your ball. You also hit an outstanding shot under pressure on the last hole. Yep IMHO you 2 guys are a well matched team and tough to beat as partners

Yep I had that problem for a while and in my present condition of not being able to turn well yet it will basically bind me up or as others say get stuck. With me I am a feel player and I have a lot of upper body strength and I will muscle it through leads to some nasty shots including my dreaded rope hook. I had a nasty rope hook problem when I was young and it crops up from time to time when I muscle it through. My swing and style depends totally on timing and with nerve damage in my back and me being a feel player it throws me off bad. Yes sir my rope hooks are nasty more like left laterals that will hook off the planet.

LOL OMG you ought to see me hook a hybrid off the planet! That is why I ditched the Hybrids and went back to my old V-Steel 7 wood in the bag and sometimes my V-Steel 9 wood.

Isn't it funny how a go to club or a demon club can change over the years.  Ever since I regripped my old 5 hybrid I can't hit it worth a damn!!

 

After yesterday's game I was hurting pretty good with a knot the size of a tennis ball in my left trap.  I managed to work it out partially with some Voltaren after I got home, but it had me thinking about bringing out the graphite clubs again.  I haven't touched them this season as I had been playing fairly decent with the old steel shafted R flex clubs.  I put that geezer set together last year when my back started acting up a bit in mid summer.  Might be time for a change...

 

Speaking of 3W; I use mine quite a bit at the course that DW and I play at.  I've been catching it flush for the most part, but all I'm getting out of it is about 155...  Goes a mile in the air even with the ball teed at iron height.  Compare that to my 7W which has become my current go to which I'm getting more like 170 off the deck!  Go figure?

The shoulders don't move during the test, just bring the hands back. If you do it again it'll confirm that you're under grip.

 

So, what we know is:

 

1. Your backswing and downswing swing planes should be higher than what your video showed - shoulder or slightly above the shoulder. You're much flatter than that. Obviously, get closer to the ball will bring the swing plane higher without any feel of manipulation. The flat turn contributes to the reach to the ball. A little more upright is a better match.

 

If you hold the club so the butt is waist high in front of you with your arms extended, your natural wrist hinge is horizontal. You will tuck the right elbow and the right arm will be under your left arm.

 

2. The right elbow out and in front move on the downswing doesn't match an under grip. If you are hitting it left some day, get the right elbow moving in front faster and that will stop the clubface from closing.

 

You'll extend the right elbow after impact and your release will be more of an extension (down the line longer). Again, hold the grip with your right hand under and open your palm so the grip is in your open palm. Put your body into impact position, then slowly push the club past impact and watch where the club head is moving in an extended line and not rolling over or turning the corner. This is the natural move with that under grip.

 

3. Your downswing should have glide (to get the axis more forward after the rear pivot), then spin (rotation) and not much vertical force. Your best swing thought may be a simple "turn and turn" to get the most out of your positions...

 

Try it for a while and see how it feels. These are some matchups that suit you. Let us know?!

It's a bleeding process to implement any changes. Too much competitive golf at the moment to go head first but the intent to allow the changes to happen and providing my body the best opportunities to make those changes (eg get closer to the ball) are helping. 

 

I'm a little confused by point 2 as it seems unclear but that may just be me. You state elbow out and in front doesn't match and under grip but then state getting the elbow in front fixes a pull. My understanding is with an under grip that the elbow will lead through the shot and thus cause the club to chase down the line a little and create a later release than the other grips. 

 

The elbow forward is an intent I am trying to implement however reaching for the ball and thus being a little flat causes all sorts of issues when the elbow leads, mainly thin blocks.

 

Everything you mention are the things I believed I needed to work on (based on my understanding of Mike's principles) but it's great to have someone with some expertise clarify and confirm.

My 3 Wood is either a 240 yard lovely high draw or a 30 yard stone cold top. Invariably it's the later hence my penchant for a 2 iron.

Absolutely it takes time just to think about making changes for a better player. Something to play with when you get bored!

I actually went back to my old V-Steel 3 wood at 15*. Wish I had done it earlier--- I had been having trouble with the Adams 16* I have carried the last 4 years or so. In fact I sold the Adams Thursday. That V-Steel is beat to hell and back but still hits good. That and the V-Steel 7 wood is all I need for Fairway Woods even though at times I do throw the V-Steel 9 wood into the mix. Yep I went back to the older stuff and am glad

Actually played yesterday afternoon got 13 holes in before the thunderstorms. Played real golf on my own ball. Our fairways are coming in nicely and the greens are still sketchy but somewhat playable. Shot 39 on the front which is +3. Wind got up some but I was even par on 10 thru 13 which is our " Amen Corner"  I will take that any day on those 3 holes. I did not do it conventional style but did it. Not really ugly but kinda Stu style---- Did 2 ups and downs not due to poor shots but due to the fact the wind was really up and the course wet and I could not get to the green. Main thing I did not hurt. Went to the range up the street at Tourist Trap Par 3 and Executive course last night after the storms passed and hit the Machogans. Hit them great and no pain. No pain this AM. I had been playing the forged CB TMs with graphite. Do not hit those bad but prefer my Macs. Yep they are back in the bag for this afternoons Nine and Dine with my wife. This will be a 4 person team scramble. And yes I stacked the deck on my side for tonight. One of my players for tonight is a ex LPGA pro. No one flashy but still a good player. She had married a friend of mine a while back and had retired from professional golf but she does play weekends with her husband. We had been playing 2 person teams and we had been winning or placing with scores like 3 or 4 over mostly on my ball. The old farts were howling so they changed back to 4 person mixed teams. One of the old farts remarked we will see how you guys do now. I looked at his team and told him that I would take my wife and play them for $100 either a scramble or let them fire 4 balls at us. He sulked away but I did talk him into a $25 team bet for tonight. And I am not pulling anything over the ex LPGA player got her AM status back some time ago. Hoping the weather holds. 

 

There is no regular Shootout today--- Some charity group I never heard of is holding a event this AM. I think it did sell out even though the price is high at $100 a player. Most of our regular guys booked I think 4 or 5 tee times at a neighboring course. I was invited but declined because even in a scramble 27 holes is pushing it for my back some. I think the guys today are playing real golf like 4 ball teams with the lowest 2 balls counting. Besides I want to save myself for the Nine and Dine this afternoon if we get to play

Think I'm headed in the opposite direction.  Replacing the V-Steels.  The 3w hasn't been used in several years, the 4w intermittently.  Settled in with the 18* 5w that provided the best relative consistency. However, been itching to try "something different" and with an A flex shaft.  Lot of online perusing for used candidates to no avail.  Most were more than I wanted to spend, not setup with what I considered to be a suitable shaft, or multiple generations old.

 

Decided to acquire a Maltby Tour TC 18* FW head with Kuro Kage HBP 50g A flex shaft though their Premium Pak (plus grip, HC, and assembly).   Delivery took about a month, waiting on shaft availability.  Received it Wednesday, played a quick 9 with it the next day.  Initial impressions were most favorable.  High trajectory to be expected, good carry distance, and really like the feel of the KK shaft.  Doesn't seem "whippy" like some A flex shafts I've waggled.  Hit as many shots as I could with it, tee & fairway.  Could step on a swing without hooking the ball.  Hit a couple nice baby draws.  As a fader, not my typical shot shape.  The head had a good solid sound and feel to the ball strike.  It's noticeably larger than the V-Steel, but the face height is similar.  Wanted to try a FW with a larger head size.  The club feels balanced and very easy to swing.  Didn't measure, but hit a couple shots off turf that were noticeably farther than a typical shot with the V-Steel.  Based on familiarity with typical landing locations.  So far, color me impressed.  

 

They have a new Utility wood in their lineup that is sized between a fairway and hybrid.  Curious about that one at 23* with the same KK shaft.  Would replace both the 7 and 9 V's.  Perhaps the time has come for LW (~50g) in A flex to make their way into the batting order.

I'm going back to re-read, digest and learn, but thank you for your contributions as someone with insight into Mike Adams instruction!

 

Having a unique body shape, I've been interested in body typology related to golf since LAWS was published.  I knew in the last few years, Mike and EA Tischler were collaborating on findings with David Wright (Wright Balance).  For you and @Divot License and others, I thought I would share Mike just released an Instagram post with a quick test to find optimal stance width.  In the video, he credits Wright for the test, and it just makes so much sense that it's disgusting.  Link:

There's a lot of info to work with and this has been just an appetizer. I don't want to get too deep into it here. Getting tested fully by someone fully trained by Mike is the best way to get the best results. It all works together... 🙂

I have been on GolfWRX for over 7 years and have never posted or read anything from The Clubhouse Grille. I had something funny happen today at the course and didn't want to start a thread, so I thought I'd post it here.  A little background to the story. I play at a goat track course that is out in the country. It is public but has memberships. I play my rounds with a buddy, Jessie, who has been a member for 20 years and can shoot anywhere from 67 to 75 typically. I have been a member 5 years and have never beaten him until last Saturday. I shot a 74 last year while he shot a 70. That was my ATL round. Things finally went my way when he stumbled with a 75 and I shot another 74 last Saturday. We had another mutual friend join us in the round. After the round we told the guy working in the Pro Shop about my victory and I made a joke about hanging the scorecard up behind the counter but other than that didn't really tell anyone else. Fast Forward to this morning when we run up with some guys we know where #2 tee box is beside the green we were on. One of the guys shouts over a congratulations to me beating Jessie last Saturday. I was like, you heard about it? He says, "I was in the grocery store this week and heard that you had beaten Jessie!" I almost fell out laughing. Like it was some huge event that was the talk of the town and people were talking about it on aisle 4.  Jessie was a good sport and thought it was hilarious too.

contorting myself trying to match up unmatchable things in my golf setup and swing. 

Rad the thing to sensibly do is take it easy and swing as not to hurt yourself as you are healing up. Yep do not do as I did despite warnings swing hard. I hurt myself back in Januarary and had to basically sit out a couple of months and it did set me back golf wise and pain wise. I also had to put my man card on the shelf some. I still do not have my pre accident distance back. I am an anyliptical person when I sit back and think I can be ok. I had revamped my equipment some and my playing methods. Friday was a total experimental round. I sucked in my pride and utitilized my 7 & 9 woods which I have done before. Worked pretty good I think. But now I have a odd set up on the top end kinda like in the old days. Have 4 headcovers in my bag now as they say but still carry and can hit my old Eye 2  one iron. Main think with this set up I am not swinging so hard and trying to push the driver and I have 2 tools I can get to the green with from like 160 out. That puts less pressure on my driver trying to get extra distance. Friday our 10th hole that can be the hardest hole on the course IMHO I had 180 into the green and a stiff wind in my face. Pulled  the old V-Steel 3 wood and scorched a little chest high screamer cut on the green made par.  Did a similar thing on our #3 hole which is  a par 3 up the hill at 165. Wind blowing in the face hit the 1 iron a butt ugly waist high hold off cut but got on there made par. Stu golf has always been ugly but now ugliest as it has ever been. Yep had to change my attitude and equipment some. Did not get to play this weekend we have thunderstorms on and off. They cancelled the 9 and Dine last night rightfully so.

I had been wondering what had happened to you @Fellaheen51?  Glad to hear that you're just keeping busy with the usual summer activities rather than anything of a negative sort.

 

Your post is timely in that I've been wondering if it's time for me to bring out the old man clubs for a go rather than what I've been using.  My play has been up and down this season, but generally at a bit better level than last year. 

 

I had been thinking about offering the graphite set to the convenor of my men's league as he had indicated that he was thinking about upgrading his irons until he discovered the price.  He's a TM guy so they may have suited him.  I just hadn't met up with him to make the offer.  Now in the last week or so I've got my neck and left shoulder acting up and thinking that the lighter weight clubs might help.  Fate it would seem is not without a sense of irony...

They have a new Utility wood in their lineup that is sized between a fairway and hybrid.  Curious about that one at 23* with the same KK shaft.  Would replace both the 7 and 9 V's.  Perhaps the time has come for LW (~50g) in A flex to make their way into the batting order.  

 

 

 

I have always said this Maltby is grossly under rated. Someone like you that is knowledegaable can match the components up tune them some and have a lethal stick. My V-Steels are tuned to my own specs. Most proper golfers will cringe I have 3 different brands and flexes in my V-Steels.  3 wood Green Aldila NVS 65 R---- 7 Wood UST Pro Force Gold R---  9 wood TM Stock TM Black shaft Stiff. I do have the weights jacked around some in different positions to acheive what I want. And in case someone wants to know the Eye 2 one iron has a blue label stock Ping regular shaft.  Even with all of that I still only carry 12 clubs. Had some younger guy at the course that was talking about he carries 5 wedges. I only carry 2 as SOP but I do play traditional lofts 48 in the PW and 56 in the SW. I will slip either my Zing 60* or 588 60* in the bag if the course I am playing has soft fluffy greenside bunkers. One of our owners had brought that up. That guy looked at me like I was from Mars or something. Of course he probably hits his gap wedge further than I do my 8 iron. But I am now relishing in the fact that I have again adapted to circumstance and play decent.

Your post is timely in that I've been wondering if it's time for me to bring out the old man clubs for a go rather than what I've been using.  My play has been up and down this season, but generally at a bit better level than last year. 

 

I had been thinking about offering the graphite set to the convenor of my men's league as he had indicated that he was thinking about upgrading his irons until he discovered the price.  He's a TM guy so they may have suited him.  I just hadn't met up with him to make the offer.  Now in the last week or so I've got my neck and left shoulder acting up and thinking that the lighter weight clubs might help.  Fate it would seem is not without a sense of irony...

Thanks.  All is well.  Just went through a stretch where I didn't seem to have much to say.  Attempting to compose became a hassle.  Took a WRX break.  The golf game is pretty much same as it ever was.  Mediocrity, with the infrequent brilliance.  

 

Been playing the LW graphite Maltby irons with a some regularity so far this golf season.  After two years of struggle, suddenly they feel pretty good.  Easy swingers.  Receiving just enough positive reinforcement to keep them in the bag.  Every once in awhile can hit the snot out of them.  As in...."Where did that shot come from?"  As I fly the green by 20 yards.  (Wish I knew whether it was launching, spinning or gliding so I could repeat.)  Going on a month plus now.  Perhaps I'm finally aging into them.    Reassessment of the implements utilized as I approach turning siebzig in a couple of days.

Yeah, Maltby is making some nice stuff these days.  I chose the fairway based on my usual methodology for getting fitted for new implements (aka something different) .   Hearsay, stuff I've read on the internet, and a calculated leap of faith.  Even had GW put it together.  Haven't done any "tuning" yet, just stuck the club in the bag and played.  Might dabble with some tape at some point, when I get around to it.  Got to play a few rounds with it first to determine if dabbling is necessary.  If ball goes straight, if the club feels "right", don't mess with it.

 

Wedges.  IDK, all depends.  Either 3 or 4 wedge guy depending on the irons bagged.  What's the PW loft starting point?  Although don't necessarily consider the PW a wedge, more of an extension of the irons.  WTS.  TS-1's:  45*, 49.5*, 54*, 58*.  ISI's:  47*, 54.5*, 58*.

He plays 5 "wedges" now because his PW is really what most of us would call an 8-iron. To follow the old Pelz methodology about wedging your ball, he promoted four wedges; 64, 60, 55, and 50 degrees. With today's modern equipment that would now equate to 5-6 wedges since most 9-irons are now in the 39-40 degree range. 

 

Don't get me wrong as I'm not for or against loft jacking. In fact, if it helps someone play a better game by naming a 3-iron a 5-iron, power to them. I just think it's folly and a little redundant to have 5-6 "wedges" and nothing below a 6-iron in your bag when we all know the lofts are still the same despite whatever number is stamped on the club.

And this is just me--- I get confused carrying 3 wedges much less 4 or 5.  I also learned the game when we only had 2 wedges like a 50* PW and a 55 56* SW. We learned to manulipate the faces to create shots. On my home course with the fringe setups being knarly but tight I went back to old school when courses were not so prim. So I use the 5 iron or 8 iron for chipping playing that bump and run. But since I have been hurt I have went back to some of my old school methods learned in my teens had to. I had to revamp my mental approach and suck in the testorone thing. I am sorta like in my heyday if I can get it around the green I can get it up and down and sometimes up with no putter needed. But going back to my roots if my short game is good it takes the pressure off the rest of my game. My wife ( bless her) has had to remind me on several occasions I am not a spring chicken anymore that I am almost 64 years of age with a traumatic injury and lucky to be walking much less attempting to play golf. Even though I was Navy I always loved and lived by the Marine Corps saying " Improvise adapt and overcome" As my wife said I survived for years racing doing that and what little professional golf she saw me play she says I did the same thing in golf back then. Just a little different now LOL instead of a high cut 4 iron it is now a high cut 7 wood. But if I have to blister one say a bullet screamer I hit the 1 iron where I used to hit the screamer 4 iron. LOL the other day I hit a high cut about 140 150 or so over a tucked pin placement. Sat it down about 5 or 6 feet. One of the members was working in his yard saw me. Good shot what did you hit ? ( assuming he saw I had a FW metal) I told him 9. He said oh wow you are back hitting a 9 iron that far. I told him naah on the 9 iron it was a 9 WOOD. Evidently he did not see what I had in my hand. LOL I only in my heydays hit a 9 iron about 130 max and not here at the beach.  But I havve had to change my attitude and revamp my equipment

@BIG STU It’s not just you.  I believe a wedge is a club you hit with less than full swing.  I carry two:  a 56 degree high bounce and 60 lob for tight lies.  Today’s PW and GW are really 10- and 11-irons.

Perhaps we'll get to a place someday where clubs just have lofts on them and we can just

put behind us this no longer meaningful club# delineation.

 

Most drivers, FWs, hybrids and wedges have lofts marked on the head now. The only slackers

in the bag are the irons. Someone will do it.....and be applauded for it and then the club#s can

be dropped once and for all.

 

I was just thinking of Ryan Moore and Scratch Golf (RIP Scratch Golf). He had that iron set

with only the lofts marked on them. It didn't catch on then but maybe by now it might if it was

in mass produced sets from a well regarded manufacturer. Frankly, I'm surprised that PXG

hasn't done it as it would have further set them apart from everyone else.
