i am not pulling for DJ but i dont get the ignorance of the ruling... of course you get to move away from a TV tower...holy crap that isnt part of the course...if it were your player you would be fine with it...stop whining.... hate DJ ? cool.. but dont make things up

He ended up hitting over the tower anyway. It was a legal drop that doesn't fit the spirit of the game. But DJ is long overdue to win a major. If he doesn't win this one, he probably won't ever get it done.

because he hit a draw up there.. if he had cut it it would have been left... with only 1 club length it would be impossible to not hit a draw back over the tower...rule says "line of sight " not flight path of the ball....... its not intended to give a free shot to the player..but a viewpoint to the hole... if he gets both fine..if not fine too.. just pure dumb luck the drop reached the short grass...

One possible change to the rule would be to change the wording to "nearest point of relief in grass the same height of cut as the original position." If no point of relief is available meeting that criterion as well as not being closer to the hole, the true nearest point of relief would be used. I'd like that rule changed, but we can't blame DJ for it.

So you want them measuring grass before the player takes a drop?

Not exactly the same height, but the same cut. If you are in fairway you drop in the fairway, if you're in the 1st cut you drop in the 1st cut. If you're in the rough you drop in the rough.

Terrible rule but not DJ's fault.

Maybe they should have them play as it lies and if he hits the tower then it is a replay?

wow.. youd rather add in a "mulligan" than give relief ? the hate is really blinding here

Piercy not getting much love. I really like his swing and demeanor. Plus he uses lots of lead tape and a 10 year old 3 wood.

He's a GolfWRX visitor and did a Q&A. Love to see him make a couple birdies comin' in.

Didn't he win that million dollar Vegas match Steve Wynn put on a few years ago before he got on Tour?

I think people get annoyed by players actual stating its in my way, then hitting the ball straight over it anyway. I know he's allowed to but why not just be honest and say that.

Honest has nothing to do with it. It's the dang rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the same for everybody. And the player doesn't have to say anything.

I am of the opinion that the ruling was correct, but the rule itself is flawed and Johnson's decision to hit that shot shows a lack of integrity.

does one get a choice ? ( real question) i thought it was mandatory relief..as in if it made your lie worse you had to take that too

That drop is ridiculous, soured the event for me.

learn the rules of golf

didn't he take 2 clubs when he was only to take 1?

he only took one club length.

For relief from a TIO, you find your nearest point where the TIO doesn't interfere. You have to drop at least 1 club length from that spot, but not more than 2.

So, you find the spot where the TIO doesn't interfere. You measure a club length from that spot, and mark that spot. You then measure a club length from that mark and put down a second mark. You drop between those 2 marks.

I could be wrong
I've been wrong before
I'll be wrong again

Doesn't sound like a terrible idea, in this case.

Man if they penalize Johnson after already have a rules guy bless it....WTF is wrong with the USGA? I watched the video too, how did he cause that ball to move?

What a ridiculous thing that could cost a guy a major.
