Tiger Coming Back!!??!! (Merged)

I don't understand the sports illustrated Alan Shipnuck rumor saying he might play Miura.

It makes no sense at all for two reasons.

1. Miura is too small. They could never afford him unless they would offer him ownership equity and profit sharing, which they would never do.

2. Miura never has paid any pro to play their clubs and they are quite proud of that fact. They even brag about it on their website.

Never is a long time. Why wouldn't they offer him partial ownership?

Family owed and very proud. No outsider is getting a piece of the company...not even tiger.

Yawn. Wake me up when he makes the cut in a 72 hole event that has a cut.

Oh, please. When he tees up

Youll be sitting there with your ham & cheese sandwich, glued to the screen with the rest of us ; )

You mean while the Golf Channel shows every one of his shots as he hacks it around to a 79 on a Thursday while the Flat Bellies play real--if barely televised--golf?

Nope. Will not watch.

I'd rather come here and hate-post in the aftermath ;-)

And Christ man, at least give me credit for pulling a Ruben off. Ham and Cheese? It's not like I'm wearing sweat pants 24/7.

Ruben!? Classy, Im dyin.

I went to the diner, was gonna get a monte christo, havent had one in like 20 years. But they charge extra for fries! Im not payin $15.00 for a sangwich.

But a good ham n american on a roll with super thin sliced ham is not bad. Couple chips. And a soda!

Lets see if TW actually plays. If you parse the statement, uses "hopes" and "intends", so.

Its a surprise, though. Gonna be a circus.

I just think it sucks that he's taking a spot in the field away from someone who could really use that, and might actually make it to the weekend.

He earned that spot. If someone else wants in, they can earn that spot as well.

He could always play them for free because he likes them. Not like he's hurting for cash.

Agreed! And IMO, if he's able to stay healthy, this time the money will be the last thing on his mind.

Ya earn what ya earn and he has earned the right to be there. Much better than the myriad of John Daly sponsor exemptions Tiger has earned his spot. And unlike JD I don't believe Tiger would use a lot of these. He will either be healthy and play well or not play at all. The guy whose "spot" he is taking has not earned a spot or he would be playing.

He is not using sponsor exceptions like Daly did.

Exactly. Why I stated he earned the right to be there. Guess I was not clear.

I'm surprised no one has started a Poll on whether Tiger makes the cut, or not.

I can't wait to see how Tiger plays - what he does. Tiger's return will be watched by all golf fans whether they like him or loathe him.

Some people will be pulling for him to play well...and others will be pulling for him to fail miserably. At the end of the day Tiger is nothing more than just another lowly ranked player trying to play the weekend.

Tigers already earned his stripes. That man can obviously do what ever he wants. Cry and moan all you want about he doesn't deserve this or that. He's the one that has the last laugh.

Golf is in a very good place right now, Day, DJ, Spieth, Fowler, Walker and Bubba- there is genuine competitive rivalry with sportsmanship, respect and humor every weekend.

With Tigers news that he "may " play, (the announcement to me did not sound 100% sounded like 80-90%)

Tiger not playing competitive golf it would be a shame if the entire PGA field just lapped him these past few years. A lot of people maybe excited on his return, but how excited will they be with a couple of top 50s and missed cuts?

Time will tell. Golf is in a very good position either way

Living under a rock these days?.... 7 pages on Tiger's announcement.. 5 pages on the previous "playoff" event in golf. hmmmm....

Gonna have to agree with Stu_man on this one. It's hard to say that golf is in a good place when all you hear is how much membership and participation is on the decline, Nike closing it's shop, and Adidas shopping the money pit of TM. To say that Tiger's absence had nothing to do with that you'd be a fool. Yea, golf is in a good place with DJ, Rory, Day, and Speith for the die hard golf fanatic, but to the average sports fan and consumer, nobody cares until Tiger returns.

79 wins 14 majors- most of any active player period. At this point dude should be able to tee it up in any tournament on any tour. If I was a tournament director, I wouldnt dare tell Big Cat he can't play in my tournament.

Wyndham basically had to print more tickets when they found out he wanted to come to Greensboro

Excellent post. And if he does play the Safeway they will deal with the same "problem" as Greensboro had.

Earned isn't a strong enough term for his exempt status. Funny how some want to ignore what Tiger and a few others earned from their play. 79 wins (not 72) and 14 majors for Tiger. He is exempt for any PGA Tour event (non majors/WGC) he wants to play without taking a spot from anybody. World ranking does not matter. Same as if Jack, Arnie, Gary and Lee wanted to play the Safeway event.

Tiger is exempt for the US Open through 2018. Exempt for The Masters, PGA Championship and The Open Championship at least for 20-25 years. Provided he can actually play.

TW has over 20 lifetime PGA Tour wins and 15 years on tour so he is exempt for life on the PGA Tour (non WGC events) as currently are Phil, VJ and DL3 if they were not exempt from some other category. His current exemption category on tour is #2 on the priority list for winning the Players Championship on 2013 (5 years). Good through 2018.

Outside of that his next exemption category (20+ wins) is #18 out of 37 categories. That privilege will get him, Phil, DL3 or VJ into any PGA Tour event they want as that category is ranked higher that anybody finishing in the top 125 on the current Fed Ex Cup points list.

At this stage, I view people tuning in or attending to just to watch Tiger the same way as I view people who watch or attend hockey only for the fights.

I'm not really going to get into whether or not it is Tiger, because I don't really believe that either. But golf has always been expensive and time consuming. Something else is the cause for the decline, it is not that simple.

I agree to an extent.. But not necessarily at these levels. The very same golf course that cost me $40 just ten years ago now runs $125. And it's not an isolated case. EVERYTHING costs prohibitively more- green fees, carts, range balls, equipment... The list goes on and on...

Exactly. And besides being time consuming and expensive (not so much where I live), it is difficult. We try to pitch it as easier with modern equipment, but that denies the fact that for 95% of the population it is just damn difficult.

Now, if you embrace the fact that the game is difficult, and you enjoy a challenge, it can be an enjoyable game.
