Golf Channel posted a pictorial of Tigers 30 Greatest Statistical Feats. Regardless if you like him or not it just illustrates how good of a player he was.

This is #14:

From 2002-05, Tiger had 1,540 putts from 3 feet and in on the PGA Tour. He only missed three of them.

I always find his cuts missed to be one of the most incredible:

"Tiger has missed 15 cuts on the PGA Tour as a professional. Jordan Spieth has missed 14. Spieth was three years old when Tiger turned pro."

In 2 years, TW won 17 PGA Tour events.

Pretty good. Byron won 26 in 1944 & 1945.

Many of his competitors were busy fighting a war at the time......

R11S 8* square; Stock stiff
Maltby KE4 14* 3w , Axe Excaliber R flex tipped 1"
RBZ 25* hb; RBZstage 2 19* hb

Tiger is great, but as a bit of perspective remember that by the early 2000s he was playing a limited schedule and only a handful of "full cut" events each year. There's no cut in the WGCs or the last two Fedex events; and the invitationals, the masters, and the first two Fedex events have small cuts.

Wait, there's no cut at the Memorial, or Colonial and other invatationals?

Small cut. Field size is 120, which typically means about 40 players get cut, instead of 70-80 at a regular full field event.

of course the field is better and the cut is still low 70 and ties. There are just fewer lower ranked players that probably miss the cut anyway. Are you trying to say Tiger had an easier time making cuts than Nelson did against the fields he faced?

"For the season, Nelson played 120 rounds and had a scoring average of 68.33 with a remarkable 67.68 average in final rounds. He had a record 19 straight rounds under 70 and won 16 stroke-play events by an average of 6.25 shots."

Byron finished 2nd, another 7 times that year.

Definitely not. But I do think comparisons to guys who play a lot (eg Jordan now or Vijay in the past) are misleading. Those guys play/played far more full field events per year than Tiger did.

You gotta beat a lot more guys to make the cut at Quail Hollow or Shell than Memorial or Quicken. Even if they are on average slightly better at Memorial... you know, depth of field and all that.

That's probably why Tiger never came from behind to win. :D

Funny how history looks at things. One poster says Tiger's cut streak is not that great because of events played with no cut. Never mind that the whole tour had the opportunity to get in those events and as I recall the next best cuts streak was in the 20's or so. Tiger went about what? 7 years?

The next wants to compare Tiger to Nelson. The first win in the Nelson streak was a partners event. That would not count as a win today. One event in Atlanta the part was 69. A little easier to have a 68 something scoring averages when playing par 69's. Obviously Nelson was a fine player, one of the best of course. We do not know what real affect the war had on the fields other than the top players had an inordinate number of wins and top 10's which certainly implies shallow fields if a very few are that dominant. Also probably why the players born over a century ago dominate the PGA tour all time wins list.

As far as Tiger not playing much and somehow that making it easier. How does playing less make it easier to win? Fire that matter in his first seasons on tour he played 18-21 events per year. If Spieth tees it up next week it will be his 21st event of the season.

Bottom line for me. Yes I think Tiger is the best player to tee it up. I saw Jack in his prime, yes I am that old, and he was great but imo Woods was better. Going back even that far though is difficult to compare players. Going back to the Hogan and Nelson era is impossible imo.

YMMV :)

It still comes down to majors, period.

Tiger has 2 majors in his last 28 PGA tour wins.

For Spieth or Rory to break Jack's record they are going to have to win 6-8 majors in their 20's and 30's.

Then maybe a couple more in their 40's. To me greatness spans an entire career!

Watson, Arnie, Seve, and now Tiger had all their majors by their early 30's.

Nelson and Jones retired at the peaks of their careers.

Phil in majors, Snead, Vijay, and Hogan all were late bloomers.

Jack was great for an entire career:

In his 20's 7 majors & 8 2nds

30's 8 majors & 8 2nds

40's 3 majors & 3 2nds

I think this one is impressive.

"Across two seasons, Tiger managed to shot a score that was lower than the field average 89 times in a row. To put this in perspective, Spieth and McIlroy have never got past 15 and the next best streak is 33 by Mark O'Mera."

I can't wait for these reactions again.

To the best of my knowledge Tiger said he "may" play in the Safeway, and he is now t yet registered. So, it is still up in the air.

Tiger has almost always waited until the last minute or deadline day to register for lesser field events. Outside of announcing his comeback, it gives tournament organizers extra time to prepare for additional security, personnel, etc...

His back could get really stiff sitting around in a golf cart all day in cold Minnesota. Just sayin'.

I'm actually mind boggled that there haven't been any more recent videos of Tiger swinging a club since the 3 duffed wedges at the Quicken Loans charity event.

Of course. And I'm sure there were other quality players in the field as well. While his stretch was a truly remarkable one, it needs to be tempered with the fact that with few exceptions he was head and shoulders above a rather decimated field.

I'll just leave it at this, geeeez, someone has to be pretty damn good and intimidating, as an athlete in any sport, to generate so many haters out there. The scary thing is he intimidates the fans of golf as well, aka the 'haters'. I can already see the fear welling up in their eyes as they read this, trying to regurgitate some snarky comeback we've all heard a thousand times before. He's a legend, and let the real fans of the game enjoy this and be happy, please??? Let's just try to focus on rooting for whomever you like, in any event, rather than rooting against any one particular individual, TW or not. And if not, you may as well take all the negative comments and go back to your shanties..... :stop:
