Lydia Ko and Caddie Part Ways

Randall Mell is reporting that Jason Hamilton is no longer Lydia Ko's caddie.

Surprised, but not surprised. She's been in a bit of a funk lately with the latest swing change, and caddies seem to be the first to get blamed.

She hasn't won in her last 6 starts, so I can see why she needs to make changes. Is this the longest slump of her career (ha ha)?

During those last 6 tournaments, she only had 2 top 10's. I can not even imagine what life is like in her world.

 

Wonder if there was anything more going on or if this is just one of those things that happens in professional golf.

Interesting that he's on HaNa's bag now. When watching the Hana Bank Championship, it looked like HaNa was talking down to her caddie, basically telling him to shut up.

Geez, can't win every time. I get she is one of the best female golfers in the world. But, to say she wanted different eyes means it's just a nicer way of saying you ain't good enough for me.

This is so true, I was caddying for Kim Kaufman at the Lotte Championship and we were paired with Lydia for the last two rounds, in the practice rounds she had a caddy, by the time the tournament started it was someone different on the bag, she is a sweetheart, no doubt, hopefully this will help her...I wish her nothing but the best.

As the article states, 7 caddies during her rookie year and then this guy for the last couple. Trying out several before settling on one isn't that strange.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if she went through several more as she matures. The player-caddie relationship you want at 17 may not be the one you want at 20 or 25.

Watched her on Wednesday at the US Open, on the range she with David and hitting so-so. Went to go play 9 holes. She played the first 3 without David and her swing look different and she was hitting great. Then David showed up on 4, she started playing awful. They were doing what she was working on. She manage to play good for 36 holes that week. Thursday she play average and Sunday she choked out there.

 

She can still win with the A-swing but I is making her less athletic golfer. She has lost distance and I don't see has gained any accuracy. Though her putting and chipping have gotten even better, I wonder why?!?!

Agreed. A few of us have been concerned that her game will suffer with Leadbetter pushing the A swing onto her to promote his own self interests.

I've heard comments like that before, I've often wondered what they're based on..

If Leadbetter's comments to the NZ media are to be believed then this has been simmering for awhile,

 

Ko's coach David Leadbetter revealed to Radio Sport that Ko and Hamilton separated last week, which has affected her during a recent form slump.

 

"I think that's been on her mind a little bit. The reasons are a little uncertain at the moment. They felt they weren't getting on together, it wasn't acrimonious in any way," Leadbetter told Radio Sport.

Then again Leadbetter also makes comments about her fail at the USWO which I'm not sure are accurate, I vaguely recall Hamilton not being convinced that doomed shot out of the rough on the 9th was a good idea but Lydia went ahead anyway. Could be wrong there though..

 

Is this a bad thing? Obviously the timing of it makes it look like a panic move but if the above is correct then it's probably the best thing Lydia could do, more poor(ish) results will just bring more stress which will likely bring more poor results. It's certainly not the caddies fault but if either party isn't happy with the setup there's little point in continuing.

Very true, I also caddied for Mi Hyang Lee and her dad was very involved at the begging of the first round, once we finished at -3, he lighten up and let us get to work...

Sounds like ol Jason landed on his feet. Left I was at the ninth green at the US Open waiting for Lydia and them to arrive. What a nightmare that hole turned into. Especially after watching her birdie 6 to take a two shot lead I believe.

 

Got home that night and settled in to watch the replay on Fox Sports One. They started from the 13th hole! Come on.

I guess this should be big news but really it's just déjà vu. I think you will see a few Lydia's emerge from our new cousins here. There emerging from everywhere here and who can blame them have you not noticed the smog during the Asia swing... oh commentators call it haze far more polite when your a guest in another country.

So life goes on and for Lydia's sake I hope she can hold it together as she has our full support here....while she remains loyal to N.Z. It would be interesting to hear from Jason on what has bought about this split but there's probably some legal issues to prevent this.

 

Kind of funny how a supposedly top golfing website does not even know her ex caddie was Jason Hamilton not Justin Hamilton! or maybe they don't care either....

Listening to her ball striking on the range a couple of months ago, I'll repeat what I've said before, Leadbetter is no good for her, plus i would like to say something that do-gooder, politically correct tossers wouldn't like about her mother.

But then again, who cares
