KBS C-Taper Bent tips

Recommended Posts

Guys, anyone know of an easy way to see if the shafts are bent, even slightly? I’ve seen this with a few Ctapers I have.

Usually you can see the ferrule won't be flush. It'll be flush on one side of the hosel but there will be a little gap on the other side.

KBS Tours do this the most and C Taper is a close second. From my experience the common trend is it happens when you hit a lot of balls off a mat. A lot of my customers bend them in the Spring when our ranges are mats only.

Those mats are rock hard in particular up here in the North. I refuse to hit range balls off of those things anymore. Haven't for two seasons now. On the rare occasion I hit balls in the freezing cold I pay but bring my own warm shags and will bring a small mat that's warm and a second one to stand on just to avoid the compression damage. My elbows are thanking me!

What number do you guys use? The numbers on the site I haven't been able to reach anybody yet, and was only able to send an email to a guy whose voicemail said he's at the pga show…….that was weeks ago correct?

Had a really easy time working with customer service, sent a few pics and a warranty set is on the way! Great customer service!

Their Customer Service is good but it just gets annoying reshafting them constantly. I also refuse to use pulled grips so it gets expensive cutting $10 grips off every time a tip bends.

Thanks for this! I've been hitting off mats all winter. Will examine my clubs before my round today.

For customers stuff, I always use 2-way tape. For my own stuff, I use painters tape and an air compressor. Like you I hate pumping off grips and even though they might move a bit, but when it comes to moving shafts around on a set of irons being able to blow them off easily is such a money saver - not to mention time. Almost $120 Cdn.

Definitely agree here, I just regripped and will either have to pull or just use the rest of the 13 I bought. Also I had cell part ferrules on so those will be getting the torch too lol.

Some times if you soak the clubs in hot tap water you can pull the ferrule up a little so you can save them. It all depends on how secure the epoxy under the ferrule is but a lot of times they'll expand enough to pull them up. It's worth a try. Just soak them in hot tap water for 5-10 minutes.

I want to try the $taper

I went to the $-Tapers and love them. feel similar to the Tours but launch lower and spin less for me. my C-Tapers were great but I like to tinker and always loved the feel of the Tours so it was a win win.

why are you wanting to go away from the C-Tapers?

I just made the switch away from C Tapers to PX 7.0s. Is this tip bending visually noticeable without pulling the club apart? Sorry if it was answered earlier in the thread. I never noticed anything but with my swing and the divots I take I’d be surprised if people are bending these and mine didn’t bend in the last 3 years

As I mentioned before, you usually can't see it because of the ferrule and guys will go get their lofts checked and find they are off a little and they get bent back to spec. When in reality, it often is that the shaft tip is starting to bend and they just don't realize it.

What is more likely to happen: a really thick piece of steel bending or a very thin piece of steel bending because you've been pounding on a mat all winter?

I just had my c taper lites pulled and reshafted in iblades. Now I’m noticing my 6 iron has this problem. I wish my pro would have told me before installing it. Is attempting to bend it back a terrible idea? My gut says yes but if it needs replacing anyways why not...

It’s been bent and even if you bend it back, it’s now weak and will almost assuredly bend back into a crooked position.

True. I’ll just ride it out until they send me a replacement. I think the rest of the set is fine but I’m paranoid now

I believe it is just the C-Tapers. KBS is good about replacing them though - just give 'em a call.

I snapped a CTX and a CTXL 9 iron shaft right at the ferrule. I use 9 iron to practice on a mat in garage so shaft gets weak. Both times I called KBS and received no call back both times. They did nothing for me.

After 3 emails last summer I finally got the me back. This is the third time I’ve had to replace a set in the last few years. The first two were easy, this year was poor. I’m glad the stand behind their product but $100+ on grips and install every time their product fails is getting old. I asked if they’d be willing to help me out since it was the third time and they completely blew me off. Guess I’ll spend the winter testing shafts to see what to move on to for next year.

I really don’t know why they don’t address the problem. It’s a design flaw and they are well aware of it but they’d rather deal with replacements than fix the problem. I find it extremely strange.

If I didn’t absolutely love the Tour V profile I wouldn’t play them. I replaced my pitch and 7 last spring after hitting off Mats all winter. I’m very steep and mats are extremely hard on them.....and my joints. : (

Joining in this thread late.

All(?) Kim Braly designed shafts suffer from this. Ever since the original Project X (i.e. the Royal Precision days) his shafts have been designed without reinforced tip sections.

After bending my original satin PX and a set of KBS Tours I've sworn off using any of his designs.

I just really like the C-Taper feel. I will continue to pay for new shafts if they break, but I don't think it is right that KBS won't stand by their product.

I am the same...I love the C Tapers and have the KBS customer service email in my contacts list. It does get old.

I was wondering the same thing, C Taper Lites as well? One problem I will not have is frozen mats or ANY mats for that matter. Darn things are evil on the joints.

I play CTLX and have a high swing speed which can get steep. I snapped a shaft on my mat the last 2 winters. My swing is much less steep now so I am hoping I can get through winter practice sessions without replacing a shaft.
