Finish this sentence...."You know you're in for a long day when..."

Weather here has really been wet for the past month now. Good news - no more drought and brush fires are out. Bad news - little chance to play.

So...

You know it's going to be a long day when it is finally perfect weather and you have to work. But worse, you check the forecast for the next day, when you're off, and it is a 90% chance of rain - all day.

When you see the group in front of you on the first tee break open a brand new large box of shag balls that they brought from Wal-Mart and start passing them out to everyone on the tee. Ugh happened last week.

Oh no.......

That's when you call home. "Hon, I might not be home until around dinner. Didn't want you to get worried."........

What's really sad is when they have to hit the pro shop at the turn to buy some more balls.

When the ranger comes up to you on the 2nd tee and says "If the group in front of you picks up, you pick up."

Well I guess that would be one way to get things sped up - just go out and have every group pick up and move to the next hole.

Wonder what the ranger might have said it you just looked him right in the eye and said...

"No."

I was so pissed when he said it. He only spoke to us because we are regulars. He's the type of ranger that passive-aggressively stares at you while you are putting out so you can't concentrate. If you are not going to say anything to the groups that are actually causing the problem why are you even there?

I spoke to the starter on the back 9 about this and told her we were the one's waiting on 4-5 holes on the front. The ranger on the back 9 was much more responsive. He figured out that the two groups in front of us were the problem and we finished the back 30 minutes quicker than the front. (1:55 vs 2:25)

Busy course last summer. Jammed. Pace was slow and painful.

Along comes the Marshal and he says he is giving us a warning. We are waiting on the tee on a par 5. There are two groups on the tee, one in FW, and one on the green.

He hadn't said a thing to anyone else.

So I walked over and asked him just how we were supposed to go faster and I pointed at the group jam on the hole.

He answered that we just needed to pick up the pace.

As it turned out the logjam was being caused by a foursome of members who were mucking around on every hole. The pro told us at the turn. When I told him what the Marshal had said and done he rolled his eyes and said he'd speak to him.

The Marshal was totally ineffective. Afraid to say anything to the members who caused the issue but openly approaching other groups stuck behind the cause.

Sigh......

When the woman in the twosome that we caught up apologises that play will be slow because she just took an 18 on the previous hole.

Her and her husband then proceed to take 4-5 practice swings each and every shot before topping the ball 20 yards and repeating the process.

I would have played through but there was a foursome ahead (complete with guy in a motley crue wifebeater and jeans (despite it being 28c) who appeared to be playing a scramble. After watching them take 8 shots to get to the green on a par 3 I picked up my ball hoping to skip ahead to the back 9 as it had already been 1 hr 50 mins to play 6 holes.

Back 9 was packed too though, so I ended up just going home.

When you're not that great of a player and you birdie the first hole... if you've been there you just plain know what I mean... :nea:

That's why I stick to the casual double 9 times out of 10. Can't go out there having expectations, ya know?

When you get paired with a large fella with beat up Ram irons from before either of us were born, but a brand new TM driver. Bonus points if he sets up with his hands in front of his lead leg and his bottom hand rolled under at an impossible angle. Almost makes me want to put it in the rough between us and the hole to the right as a warning.

This happened to me yesterday... when the starter says to you "don't worry they won't slow you down. They are the intersectional team from a near by course". It was a 5 hour round waiting every shot, with a 2 hole gap in front of them by the sixth hole. I couldn't tell how far behind they were by the end. I had people that teed off 40 minutes behind me catch up on 7.

When buddy:A, brings his buddy: B, to your tee time and buddy: B, proceeds to hit his tee shot but 30 yards, turns around and says "usually I hit it about 3 bills, don't know what happened there." This guys driver shaft literally bounces off his shoulder on his backswing?! Needless to say there were no "3 bills" tee shots all day and how he didn't snap his driver shaft throughout the round is beyond me.

...when your pro-am partner is Kevin Na and your bud's partner is Ben Crane and you're put on the clock before leaving the first tee.

I actually played with Na before he was a pro. He wasn't that slow then. He wasn't that good either.

Good is relative though.

Odds are he'd still have kicked my butt so I would have said "Man, he's a great player!"

It wasn't relative at the time. When he was 16 and thinking about turning pro, his dad stakehorsed him in our weekly game. It was like child abuse. Cost Papa Na a lot of Dong that day.

This is really interesting because it sounds like he got slower - and somehow also better. But I can't even remotely believe those two are somehow connected.

Bet you made not only a little money but some great memories.

My favorite Na memory is about 16 strokes from the bushes in that one tourney. Painful to even watch.

Not really all that memorable. We to a man thought he'd never make it. Tells you what we know.

Got to ask. And I am NOT being a DB - serious question actually.

You beat Na. Why didn't you end up going pro? I know it's hard, few make it, and all of the other things people say when asked this. But could not help but be a little nosey because odds are you have the talent and I could not help but wonder what kept you from heading down that pathway in life?

For the record a friend of mine had the ability and talent but just did not want to turn golf into a job. So now he's "living the dream" as a Firefighter/Paramedic here in Florida. He still plays WELL and is a hoot to have on a scramble team. And he even still talks about taking the mini tours on again in his off time. But for him golf was fun and he wanted to keep it that way I guess. Plus, as he put it, not too many make it on tour.

Thanks in advance BTW.
