Ping putters

Anyone know why the custom run of Anser PLD was so short? I hesitated to order one, then the 'order' window was only around 2 months, then I was at PING in March, didn't ask about the PLD but saw them laying around, they looked great. I asked my PING rep, said can't get 'em anymore. I like the direction the PLD was going but they seemingly pulled the plug on it. Playing a customed out Redwood Anser w/Starshot but feeling like with the balls changing, it feels too harsh now.

Ping initially set up the PLD for about 2,000-3,000 putters. Ping sold less than 70. They pulled the plug because the demand wasn't there but my rep said they are re-working the model and plan to have a new PLD program in the future.

Favorite model currently on the shelf (probably not for long though) is the Karsten TR Anser 5. Longneck blades are my favorite design.

+1. I love the 365 gram head weight. Only thing I did not love was the color, so I sent it to their WRX department to have it StarShot. It's on the bench right now as I try something new, but I have a feeling it's going to find it's way back into play sooner than later.

Thanks RHL, that is interesting, only 70. The PLD is really nice in person, don't think they approached the market right, glad to hear they'll re-tool and try again. I was ready to get one after I saw it in person. They would have sold more if people could see it and touch it.

Yeah they did look great. I'm actually heading to Ping HQ on Thursday for a full day of training for my company, I am definitely going to try and get more details on the new PLD program.

I never thought I'd find a putter that would knock my late dad's Ping JBlade out of my bag, but I've been rolling this Ping D66 for a couple years now and love it.

b66bjpg.jpg

I love the D66 too!

It just lines up so nice and rolls great. Milled face with insert.

Do you also have the IWI model with the sole weights?

no offense (and im just learning more and more about clubs) but isnt that comment contradictory?

I understand a 'milled' face as being a putter face made from one piece of metal 'milled' into a putter

An insert is obviously a piece of metal with an insert added to the face thus giving you 'two piece' putter whereas milled is 'one piece'

That's a valid question. In this instance, the Ping iWi is a cast putter and the insert is metallic with a milled pattern to give a softer feel. Some milled putters have an insert, making them a "two-piece" putter as you referred to. Think SC Studio Style and SC Tei3. For me personally, if I'm buying a milled putter, I'm not looking at one with an insert, but rather a solid one-piece milled putter with a solid feel (Ping Redwood, SC Studio Stainless). Feel, of course is subjective, so to each their own though.

Ya thats the reason i asked, i had an odyssey white hot, had the insert. When i bought the Ping Anser 0 it had 'milled' in the name which prompted me to google it.

I liked the look of the Sigma G Tess. It was my favorite for a short while but I am currently unloading that one. My favorite right now is my Karsten TR Anser 2 but I also just dropped off a Redwood D66 to Ping's WRX department. I've never had a milled putter before and the feel is pretty awesome. Hopefully I will have it back Tuesday.

Nice. The Redwood D66 (I have a black satin) is one of my favorite putters ever. I have of course moved on to 25 different putters since then, and not putting a lick better, but that is one that I still have in my basement and won't get rid of. I remember back in the day, someone on here turned the D66 into a flow neck putter, which would have been right up my alley. Great shape on the D66, and great feel with the Redwood. Enjoy it.

Thanks! I can't wait to put it to use when I get it back. I also got the black satin but it was worn pretty good so I'm having it star shot.

Went from an old White Ice 2 Ball to a Sigma G Anser and it was the best golfing decision of my life. My distance control from 20-30 feet went from the worst part of my game to the best. Deadly!

Must be something to the TR grooves. I ordered and am using a Voss vault putter and I have gone from an average (at best) putter to above average. Making more 20-30' putts than ever, but more importantly, the distance control is outstanding.

I've gone back to my PING Anser TR 1966 that came out last year. I feel that it's like the PING Anser Milled range but better. Lovely pop off the face plus it has a sound slot.

Love mine as well. The weight is perfect for me.

I had an Anser 2 TR 1966 - I liked the sole design and it had pretty good feel.

Went to a Vault Voss, however, and will never look back. For me, it just fits.

Doesn't seem like anyone on the tours are using the Sigma G ... Which Anser version is most used on the tours ? I don't see any PING Vault ones either, wish they made an Anser version in addition to the Anser 2 Platinum. I have a Redwood Anser with starshot finish, still play it but when I'm not rolling it well, it feels hard/harsh. Looking for something that is pure Anser (like PLD maybe) in the Scottsdale / 009 style, not gonna play a SC however.

From your own experience, do you think the Voss feels more solid than the TR 1966?

They both feel solid, but the Vault to me feels soft and solid v. firm and solid.

Difference between milled and cast heads.

Thanks again for the feedback. I'm not a fan of putters on the softer side so I think I'll stick to the TR Anser 1966.
