I was surprised by some of the play. I'm nothing special but watching the top am's lately they seem to play almost Tour ready golf. I saw a lot more wayward shots than high quality shots and very few putts dropping.

Just surprised me

The difference between top amateurs and guys on tour is very small. At this point in the US Am, it can range from some guys being better than most tour players while being an am (Rahm) to guys fractions of a shot worse to guys maybe a shot or two per round worse. At margins that slim, it's pretty darn hard to see the difference visually. You really can't differentiate between someone who shoots 70.8 vs 71.2 vs 70.4 or whatever in such a small sample size. They are going to look the same, for the most part.

Thornberry for the win!

I was disappointed when I saw he lost yesterday, but he had a good run. I wonder about his longevity in the game just given the weird hitch in his swing. I know Jim Furyk....got it....but still- it just doesn't look that consistent to me.

Think he ran into a buzz saw and may not be experienced enough on the California grasses yet. The guy he played Smyth was just insane. Almost every shot was on the pin with little to no movement. Gotta be the odds on favorite remaining.

Curious, did you watch it? There were a lot of poor shots hit. Maybe it was nerves or something but I was surprised how few quality shots were hit and how many bogeys seemed to be put up.

I watched the round of 64. Did not watch today but have watched the US Am plenty of times before.

It's golf. There is always plenty of bad shots hit. Riviera is one of the hardest courses the tour plays all year. Put Riviera in a USGA setup (harder than standard PGA Tour setup), show the non-leaders, and it wouldn't look as easy as we've grown accustomed to.

Edit: looking at scorecards from round of 16, seeing some good scores. Theo Humphrey -2, Kristoffer Ventura lost shooting Even, Travis Smyth +1. 62 seed 1 over through 17. These are all scores that would be inside the cut line at the Genesis Open (for 1 round).

Connor Syme from Scotland into the QF. He has a good matchplay record having won the Australian Am last year.

I volunteered as a standard bearer for the first two rounds of match play...never did it before, thought it might be fun to see tomorrows stars, and get some exercise...plus the weather was spectacular.

Didn't see any awful shots in my two matches, which went 16 an 18 holes. Only one double, which surprisingly came on 13 from the middle of the fairway (heavy draw short right into the wind - landed in 2 foot grass).

One player, the loser, hit it to 12 feet or less on ALL the par 3s - and missed every putt! Other player was in bunker twice, and rough once...halved all the holes.

And 10 is really an incredible hole and great fun to watch them play up close...saw eagles and triples.

Best shot was a 295 yard three wood from the trees right on 11 onto the green...I don't have that shot!

Watching this over the past few days reminds me again what a great hole #10 is.

Yes, a truly wonderful hole. But that's one of the great aspects of Riviera; it has so many wonderful holes. The architectural charms are blatantly obvious even when viewing on television.

Peter Oosterhuis was the Director of Golf at Riviera for a while, and he was once asked what his favorite hole was. "All of them," he said.

Back to the 10th, though. During Thursday's telecast Paul Azinger said something which took me by surprise. When the Norton-Humphrey match arrived at the tee Norton chose to go for the green with a driver, to which 'Zinger chimed-

"If you decide to drive the ball here, you're really hitting only one difficult shot. If you decide to lay up, you gotta hit two because it's not a gimmie lay up, and certainly a difficult second shot."

Immediately after saying that Norton pulled his driver 20 yards left of the hole, but pin-high, and was faced with a pitch over the deep greenside bunker. He pitched through the green and ended up in the right bunker and subsequently lost the hole.

Meanwhile, Humphrey laid up with a 5I, hit wedge to 6 feet and won the hole. :) I think the 10th is a great match play hole.

Played with a guy that was bounced in stroke play and he said the greens were running 14 and they look like they've firmed/sped up as the weeks gone on. That kind of speed and firmness at Riv could make even the best golfers look silly.

I really doubt the greens are running anything faster than a 13

From a competitors mouth that would have a fairly good handle on green speeds.

Once you get to 14, that kind of gets terrifyingly fast. These greens are fast this week, but I doubt they're running at 14 feet. Some of the downhill putts are scary, though. The greens are also quite firm.
