2017 SEP 14-17 "THE EVIAN CHAMPIONSHIP"

We all know that ideally they play 72. The LPGA is not as well funded as the mens. No big surprise to anyone I'm sure. Rather than the R&A or PGA or USGA they have name sponsors footing the bill. Argue all you want about 72 holes the call was correct to replay. The incorrect call was to even try to play.

Women's majors are largely sponsor driven. Men's are not. ANGC/USGA/R&A/PGA can do whatever they want, and they have the money to see it thru. They can afford to be purist.

Make no mistake, this is an Evian event ,not a LPGA event. Mike Whan probably can't take a leak without asking for permission. If they want the party to wrap up by Sunday night, so it will be.

You may well be right but its never a good idea to let the tail start wagging the dog.

Except here the dog is Evian and the tail is LPGA.

I suppose Mike Whan could play hard ball and insist on 72 holes, even offers to pay for the expense of a Monday finish. But a potential fallout between the two would not be in the best interest of LPGA.

Evian wants the LPGA name, but they have the money to run their own show if it comes down to that. Does Whan really want to risk losing a big sponsor over 18 holes of golf ?

There are two separate issues here.

1, Reducing the event to 54 holes.

2, Wiping out the scores of the first round.

LPGA can keep the first round score AND play 54 holes, for a Sunday finish.

You don't hear many players complaining about 1, because they all understand Evian is running the show. What they want, what they get. The players is not going to publicly bite the hand that feeds them.

All the complains from the players are for 2. And I agree. It is golf and it is called the luck of the draw. Mike Whan and LPGA really dropped the ball on this one.

Very true, while the 54-hole major is less than ideal the decision is totally understandable from a logistics point of view. On the other hand the reset feels wrong.

And for those people who doesn't watch women's golf but are now piling on the LPGA, they really have no right.

Perhaps if more of them watch women's golf, then the women's majors wouldn't be as sponsor driven as they are. And Mike Whan wouldn't be bowing down to his French masters.

I watch women's golf. I can spot many of the players just by watching their swings - same as the men.

I have been saying for years that the Evian should not be considered a major. Now I feel vindicated.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse

54 hole is not that bad for ladies..

Look at women's tennis, which is far more popular than women's golf..

They only play 3 sets vs men playing 5 set on all majors and most tournaments..

I'm a pretty big tennis diehard and women's tennis isn't as popular as you think. Especially if you took away the advantage of playing their majors with the men. Have stand alone Women major's in Tennis and that will tell you all you need to know about the popularity of Women's Tennis and it will really drop in the US when the Williams sisters retire.

Well, regardless of all the controversy, I'd really like to see Moriya win.

She's quietly had a terrific year. No wins but consistently high finishes. Keep thinking she's gonna break through anytime. Tomorrow could be the day.

Yes, it would be nice to see Moriya take it, but she hasn't yet demonstrated that she can hold off the chargers on Sunday. IK and Lydia have a lot more experience being in that position, and they're both eager to cash another winner's check. Lydia certainly wants to get the losing streak off to the side, and IK would love to top off her incredible season. While Sung Hyun stank it up out there today, she can certainly go low again.

Ayako had a great round today, but I'm not sure if she can do it two days in a row. In any case, it should be an exciting finish. The course definitely showed some teeth these past two days. A cutline of +3 is not bad.

Wasn't Jessica through 9?

EDIT...Just read Jess was on 9, not through. That is a bit more than "only a few people on the course."

Article I read says they were only an hour into the round.

Guys, if you didn't see it. ..balls were embedding half the ball into the green. Puddles, large ones, everywhere on the greens. The only rain they true to play was to get 72 in they needed to play.

nobody is arguing about stopping play due to the weather and course conditions.

many are upset because:

1. play could have continued after the rain stopped.

2. all scores were discarded

3. majors are played over 72 holes no matter how long it takes to complete it.

if the sponsors do not agree to this from the beginning they have no right to call their tournament a major..

ideally the correct path should have been:

1. suspend play until weather improves and continue if it does till darkness..

2. try their best to catch up by starting early on the 2nd day and get as many holes in and continue this until the field catches up.

3. if it takes a finish on monday or later..so be it.

this will surely place a strain on the organisers and players but hey!...it's a major.

the organisers took the easy way out on this one and it has diminished its importance as a major..

i cannot recall anything similar happening in the men's majors..

This is essentially how I feel as well.

Anytime, you have a major, you expect 72 holes of golf, regardless of the conditions. If you have to start early the next two mornings etc.. then that's what you do. Imagine if another major sport decided to nullify the first quarter. period etc... of a playoff or premier game!?

IMO... it lessens the status of this tournament as a major. The LPGA made a bad call.

I'll be honest: I had a bad visceral reaction when I checked the leaderboard after the first non-wiped round. I think that was almost as bad a result as the ruling could have had, like maximum impact. A player who bombed out dramatically, suddenly teleported to a dramatic lead. And players who had played those same bad conditions well, now in danger of being cut. Even if you really love SHP, there's just no way to put a good spin on that. :(

Ah well. It's a bad situation, but it's the facts on the ground.

Feel better after the second round. Really glad SYR saved herself at least. As good as the transformation must have felt to SHP, it must have felt awful for her.

Moriya would be a neat win. I'm always glad when she does well and gets to be her own star. Ayako would be an amazing win, would love to see that happen! Hope she has a great final round and places real well.

But of course I'm all Goooooooooooooo I.Kaaaaaaaaaaaaay! It's just an amazing time to be an IK fan. Wish I could go back in time a couple years and reassure good things are coming.

?

You must really dislike Paula. When has any player not been allowed access to medial treatment during a round?

Nothing against Pink panther or medical assistance, just saying if you allow muscle treatment you should also allow stretching devices during a round.
