Why do you feel bad for Evian the sponsor? They basically cornered Whan by threatening to withhold their sponsorship money if their tournament wasn't declared a major. Whan didn't have the b@lls to stand up to them. The LPGA has 5 majors. The golf world hates it. Since becoming the "5th major" in 2013:

 

2013: 54 holes

2015: In Bee Park and Whan's laughable argument of the Super Slam

2016: In Gee Chun and the lowest 72 hole score in Men's or Women's Major history

2017: 54 holes

 

It's obviously a nice, high-profile, big money event. But this is no major. Mr. Whan, do the right thing and tell the French they can have their money back. The Evian is no major championship.

Huh? Henrik Stenson shot -20 at the 2016 Open Championship. Does that disqualify it as a major, too? Heck, three of the last four Open Championships have been won with scores of -15 or better. Jason Day shot -20 at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in 2015. I guess that should go as a major as well.

 

There's nothing sacred about having four majors.

I certainly believe they need to rethink the schedule, and move it to a date that has a slightly better track record when it comes to the weather. I believe swapping it with the KPMG would make sense.

It's cursed because it's being portrayed as something it isn't in a unprecedented break of tradition in any professional sport. Only fitting this takes place on LPGA.

You know this for a fact or just a speculation ?

 

My theory is at the time LPGA was in real danger of losing Kraft/ANA, so Mike Whan did this as kind of an insurance policy.

Agree, women's golf cannot afford to be purist. It has to be flexible and able to think outside the box.

It's a pretty course and it's in EUROPE - you know, that place that tries to upset the US team once in a while in the Solheim cup, and sometimes actually does.

 

Europe does matter. But then, so does Asia. There are far too many tournaments in the USA percentage wise.

Move it to early July, and move the KPMG to September. Even in the northern part of the U.S. September is a wonderful time for golf.

Actually you both lose, I take long and wild Joanna Klatten, who is #1 in distance and #148 in driving accuracy. But it doesn't matter in long driving, she only has to get one ball in. And she is French.
