An Eight Club Golf Bag

Sean2

Recommended Posts

Been playing 8 clubs as well... driver,19 deg hybrid, 5,7,9,Pw, sw and putter. All in a moonlight bag. Never had so much fun and still score the same...

Hey! How about that: another minimalist golfer with a Ping moonlite carry bag from La Belle Province.

Congrats on making your first-ever post on GolfWrx, too.

Tx! Love this site

I love the idea of a minimalist set up, I am going to a 6 club set up this season, still testing it out, but likely 3w(15*), 4i(25*), 7i(35*) PW(45*), SW(55*) & Putter all in a MacKenzie Original Walker bag.

Welcome to the club. Please keep us posted on your results.

Thank you, will do! How do you find playing with 3w as your longest club?

What’s your gapping playing this set up?

I’m still testing which irons I want to buy (buying new sticks for this set), then I will adjust the lofts to those specs. Ideally I want to keep 10 degree gaps between clubs, keep it consistent. I’m still figuring out distances but I am trying to get irons that cover around 175, 150, 125 & 100. Then obviously 3w will cover the tee and long fairway shots. Still on the fence about not having a driver in the bag, so I may bump it to 7 clubs depending how this goes. I will try and post a WITB once I get the set all figured out.

I'm not in the 8 club bag, but will go with 6 or 7...Generally driver, 4 hybrid,6,8,pw,58 and putter.. or 3wood, 5,7,9,52 and putter. I score about the same with all my setups, including my full bag of 13......

For me, 3w has several advantages — dual purpose off the deck and tee, nearly as long as a driver, and I find myself in much less trouble off the tee which takes pressure off other parts of my game. Again, this is what I find works best for me.

Half the clubs, twice the fun!

I am thinking of going this route as well, and just for the reasons you articulated.

Anyone here watch the Rick Shiels video where he played an entire round with nothing but a 7 iron? Including putting and all. He shot a low score for crying out loud! Proof positive that a good swing, distance control and a little creativity can go a long way towards a decent score.

He also did it on St Anne's old links.... That's some course and very tough! One of the best I've played

Good golf course. I played it years ago and really enjoyed it. I have never gotten as wet before or since though. We could see the rain coming from miles away.

I use to live in Blackpool years ago so i played it a number of times, and when the rain comes in off the Irish sea youre going to get soaked! Love the area thou, some great courses along the flyde coast

I wil never forget it, I was so wet even with waterproofs. Apparently one guy had gone out with no waterproofs or umbrella.

It's a golfing paradise along that coastline. Unfortunately I havnt played any of the others, but one day.

When I play the local par 3 course, I usually take Driver, 4H, 5, 7, 8, 9, P, S, L and putter.

(I take the driver just as a long balance handle so the bag doesn't ride funny on my back; the 4H is for the longest hole = 185 yards.)

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5° (base loft); weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Hybrid:  Calla Big Bertha OS 4H at 22°  ||  Irons:  Calla Mavrik MAX 5i-PW

Wedges*:  Calla MD3: 48°... MD4: 54°, 58° ||  PutterΨSeeMore FGP + SuperStroke 1.0PT, 33" shaft

Ball: 1. Srixon Q-Star Tour / 2. Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

     Ψ  Backups:

  • Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced) + Evnroll Gravity Grip |
  • Slotline Inertial SL-583F w/ SuperStroke 2.MidSlim (50 gr. weight removed) |

I've had a little tweak as my irons are crap! Love hitting woods and hybrids and I went to my local driving range last week and in the second hand bag was a Cleveland hibore 8 iron....boy I belted it! So I'm missing a 6 hybrid which was bought about 30 minutes ago.....in the sale half price! So I'm still 8 but the sticks have had a little change around:

Driver

7 wood 20 degree

Hybrid 24 degree

Hybrid 30 degree

Hybrid 37 degree

Ping eye 2 wedge

Ping i3 blade sw

Putter

Lovely! Just a pitty my course is under water

Next round will be an 8 club bag

Driver

U65 3 iron

5-7-9-50-56

Putter

Jones original (weather permitting)

Looking forward to it

D,

I managed to pick a jones original even over this side of the pond absolutely love it although could do with a double strap for it, possibly loose a little of the style look but i find the single strap gives my back a bit of jip!

Look the bizness tho, and thats what its all about ;)

What kind of hybrids do you play? Must be difficult to find high lofted hybrids around 38* loft.

Titleist 24 which can be altered down to 23 if I want, but 24 suits me best.

Benross quad speed which is 30 degree I'm told, but I love this club. Only used it today but it's great fun to hit.

My 8 iron is a Cleveland hibore 37 degree, which was found in a large second hand rack....again great fun to hit.

Wotcha M,

Good to hear from you. Nice pick up on the Jones, they are great bags but I know what you mean about the single strap. I have found myself looking at the Ping Moonlite and Titleist Sunday bags recently as they’ve got double straps.......however they just don’t have the cachet. I see the bag as helpful distraction from my crap shots

For a winter minimal walking golf bag the other things to fuss over:

Minimal carry bag - I use a Wellzher T2 Sunday bag. Structured and usable on a cart if required.

6-8 balls max.

Snack - protein bar

Small tee pouch with aleve and chapstick

Range rubber tee when the ground is frozen!

Winter gear- gloves and beanie

Small water bottle

Small Towel - for nose not face!!

Wear the jacket required

No headcovers or rangefinder

No other crap...

consideration for frozen turf is funny...but true. that's why i prefer to play "odds" with a 3w rather than "evens" with a driver. just throw the ball on the ground and hit 3w. bonus points for not needing tees in your pocket, making it a bit easier to wear winter gloves as well.
