That 2nd shot into 18.

Not sure if Parnevik pulled it or went for the pin.

Granted, it's been a while, but IIRC what happened was Parnevik had been studiously avoiding scoreboards all day and intentionally didn't want to know where he stood.  He thought he needed birdie to tie, though he actually only needed a par to tie.  So the shot wasn't pulled, he was going right at it.  He hit PW, thinking the adrenaline would give him the extra carry he needed.  Instead he short-sided himself and you know the rest.

Look at a scoreboard, 9 iron to the center of the green, two putt and go to the playoff and see what happens.  Alas, 'twas not to be.

Thanks for the information.

Parnevik had 2 shot lead after 3 rounds at the 1997 Open.

Although he didn't play well in the final round, Leonard's putting was too good that day.

Jesper Parnevik.

I believe a lot of people have forgotten how good he was during his prime rather than just a fashion statement.

  • 5 PGA Tour wins
  • 4 European Tour wins
  • 4 top 5 finishes in majors
  • 2 2nd place finishes at the Open Championship (he was close to winning either championships)
  • Highest world ranking of No. 7
  • Finished in the world top 50 for 8 straight years (1994 to 2001)
  • 3 Ryder Cup

The thing I remember about Jesper was how long and hard he hit his Irons and the sound he made was different.

I remember reading somewhere years ago in an interview he did where he said he delofted his Irons by up to two clubs at impact.

This was the first Open I ever attended, my Dad took me and we went every year until 2008.

As he was the first player I saw win a big event in person and also at the time we had similar stature issues (short) I made an immediate connection to Leonard and have been a fan ever since (even despite THAT Ryder Cup moment)

Leonard was a classy player (apart from the 99 Ryder Cup nonsense, obviously).  As you will know, he also came close in the '99 Open on the hardest course/set-up I have ever seen, at Carnoustie. Hit it in the Barry Burn on the 72nd hole - and again in the playoff.

Much as it's hard to dislike Nick Price - man, I wish Jesper Parnevik had won the '94 Open at Turnberry.  That 18th hole has a lot to answer for (see 2009 too).

Jesper's career deserved at least one major.

Al Geiberger after what I consider to be the greatest round of golf at the 1977 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic. (St. Jude's Classic)

Persimmon and balata, 7,193 yards, par 72, 100F heat no birdie putt less than 8 feet. Sunk a 10' birdie on the 18th hole to shoot the first 59 on tour.

Saved the tournament. It was the last year of the tournament since no one would sponsor it and it was going to be dropped from TV coverage for the next year.

Peter Oosterhuis played on six consecutive Ryder Cup teams for Great Britain and Ireland, and later Europe, from 1971 to 1981. Representing Great Britain and Ireland from 1971 to 1977 he had an impressive record, especially in singles matches. In 1971 he beat Gene Littler and Arnold Palmer, in 1973 he halved with Lee Trevino and beat Palmer again, in 1975 he beat Johnny Miller and J. C. Snead while in 1977 he beat Jerry McGee. At that time he had a singles record of 6 wins, a half and no losses.

Bert Yancey is a tragic golf story. He was diagnosed with bipolar before is pro career and came back in 1974 when he was only 36 which led to his golf game to decline.

  • 7 PGA Tour wins

Retief’s swing is among the most perfect modern swings I can think of...

I remember my mouth hanging open watching shinnecock...

anyhow, this video should be in the ‘dictionary’ next to “21st Century golf swing”

An ode to Vijay...

his swing was/is so awesome....

Like Miller, he needed room at impact...Miller slid his left foot to clear and Vijay made perhaps the most unique hand move in golf history....he completely lifts his right hand to allow for a good clear of his left side without crowding...

His swing and, in particular, his impact position is absolute work of art...

Yeah that’s Miller....when jack honored him at memorial, they showed a montage and jack Got up to the podium and said something to the effect that “wow, Johnny, I never realized how much your game looks like mine”

to which Johnny said something to the effect of “why wouldn’t I copy everything you do”....presumably copied jack on putting too

The great thing about Jack's putting was that you could look at a silhouette and know it was him. Back in those days, when you saw Jack crouched over a putt on TV, you knew you had time to go make a sandwich or put a second coat of paint on the garage and still get back in time to see him putt it.

He'd crouch over it forever... then make it.

He said that there was no trigger for him. He just waited until it "felt right."

Only difference I see between Nicklaus and Miller is the grip.

Jack's hand is much more behind (away from target) than Millers. Johnny seems to have taken the stance of Nicklaus and mixed it with the grip of Arnie. Makes sense as they were the two legends of golf while he was growing up.

And thus was borne multiple generations of slow playing golfers

I thing I notice about the older generatoins of greats when puting is how far they seem to sit back into their putting stances. Shins upright, rear end sticking out behind them along way and countered by the body leaning forward.

Modern players are much more upright, legs much straighter and the body leant forward from the hips.
