Indeed, and thank goodness PGA Tour players aren't dressing like these insufferable clowns. LOL

3 things I remember about the 2000 US OPEN

1. Tiger's win, of course

2. Ernie's reaction finishing T2 - in shock at Tiger's performance

3.  Bobby Clampett shooting 68 at T4 in the first round

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-jun-16-sp-41691-story.html

The announcers were all freaked out.

WTH is Clampett doing out there?!?!?!?

clampett could’ve had a very spectacular career...he was just a smidge snake bitten [around the greens mainly]...

but dang did he have a good swing...

he’s a forgotten player who once was knocking on potential stardom

and Ernie, my gosh...what can I say...one of the only guys I’d put in the same league as [my swing idol] Monty when it comes to tempo

goosen once said something that always surprised me...

He basically said that everyone thinks ernie is a feel player because his swing is so smooth and easy looking…

But the amount of thoughts and precision Ernie employs require a slide rule… LOL

It was a good line from Retief…

u can see glimpses of ernies attention to mechanics every now and then...

and now, we fight

I posted this one in the early days of this thread, board change over ate it.  Pretty much tells you all you need to know about the 2000 US Open.  Gotta feel for Ernie.  IMO it was his career that suffered the most having gotten stuck playing in the Tiger era, much more so than Mickelson's.

that photo is awesome...

tiger is the only American on that board....it was him vs the world

Clampett might have had an extremely sound swing, but you have to question a guy who teed off, off his knees (even if he was only a marker) in the US Open.  Bet he regrets that today/

Casper is by far the most underrated golfer ever.

Looking at these pics it looks like Casper had extremely long arms in proportion to this body.

I bought a book about Billy Casper.  I think that it was written by his dentist, and the gist of the book was why Player, Palmer and Nicklaus were getting all the attention.

Now, Casper was an exceptional player.  Exceptional.  But he had his idiosyncrasies, and the press liked to comment on his buffalo meat diet and his Mormon faith (and how many kids he had).  It was a shame, but his lifestyle invited the "not quite big 3" tab that the press hung on him.

Maybe he should have played the Hogan card and not talked to anybody.

All I know is that he could hit it pretty long, he was pretty smooth, and he could play.

Item: two guys dragged their right feet through the shot: Billy Casper and Lanny Wadkins.  Back with persimmon heads on steel shafts, the duck hook was a real thing, and that was their move to keep the quacker out of their repertoire.

Brian Barnes hitting his shot while smoking a pipe is the best.

I followed him at the 1975 Ryder Cup when he beat Nicklaus twice in the same day.  Dude could play.

Brian Barnes should have his own thread.  Once marked his ball with a beer can before putting to win.

Would leave both men and women trembling with that signature look.

The pipe, the collar, and a pair of those famous short shorts that left little to the imagination would be quite the ensemble.

I don't know how I've missed this thread, it's glorious!

I have posted my favorite pic a couple times before over the years when the Ryder Cup was approaching. Sorry if it has already been posted here...I haven't looked at all 69 pages yet! I tore it out of a golf magazine many years ago but I don't remember which one. (I'm thinking it was GOLF) It was in a "Ryder Cup Preview" kind of article. It must have been somewhere around 89-93. Amazingly, I still have it after all these years!

It's from the 1973 Ryder Cup played at Muirfield. That's Billy Casper on the left

Is he like the American version of Poulter?  He pisses off the Europeans during Ryder Cup?   I generally do not watch Ryder Cup.  Reed can sure play.  His iron play is right there with his putting.

That last one from Hoylake '14 is spectacular.  The low angle, the sand flying, the ball with its own little comet tail, and the Claret Jug silhouette centered in the background with the long grass in front.  Perfect composition, great pic.  Just textbook perfect.

spacer.png

that was the main pic I wanted to upload...

one of the best open pics ever taken imho

especially considering the toll those bunkers took on the leaderboard on Saturday and Sunday…

It also further cements tigers 06 championship as the greatest ball striking week to ever grace this planet as he carved up the minefield Hoylake as though it was a “regular” course...
