watson held off Nicklaus who was absolutely on his heels...

Watson would hold off Nicklaus [and miller] again in 1981..Miller should’ve won 81 by 10 shots if he could’ve made a single putt Friday or Saturday...81 masters still too painful for me to post ha

 

anyhow, im glad everyone got the note in 77 to wear brown/rust/orange for at least one day

 

dang, watsons swing was so effing cool...so was crenshaws

Jack 1975-79

 

he made a small change to his chipping to lock his leading arm after watching a young Spaniard names Seve..

 

Jack has often credited Seves wrist “lock” style around the greens with a few of jacks later majors....

 

anyhow, when jack decided to focus on his short game from 75-80, it really wasn’t a fair fight...it was glorious

crenshaw and Nicklaus were hanging around but Floyd was unbeatable that week...

 

 

As an aside, Eddie Pearce(red picnic plaid pants) had a swing of pure beauty...he was T10 after day 1...

and Tom Kite had, in those years, the coolest swing of his career imho...

Harvey Penick had Ben and Tom swinging with the most badass reverse Cs this side of jack....

I reckon the 79 European team was among the most fun Ryder Cup teams to have ever been on...

 

Dang Faldo could putt and chip in Ryder cup matches...

he and Monty were, outside of jack and perhaps Larry Nelson, scarier than anyone to play imho

 

faldo often gets forgotten due to his successful “after-golf” life...

fwiw, it’s kind of awesome to be a knight anointed by the queen...

im a Texan but have an abiding love of the crown as America is a child if British Imperialism..

I know we all reflexively acknowledge Bobby Jones as great...but he was more than great...

especially during the 1926-1930 stretch...

 

it’s astonishing how good he was...he once beat Espinosa 23 up in a 36 hole match play...to do this to a fellow 

 

anyhow, he won the open championship in 26 and 27, then again in 30...

Jacks. always said it wasn't a conscious move but a result of him trying to get the club in a certain position. He had to let the elbow fly and heel lift due to physical restrictions (inflexibility) otherwise he couldn't get the club as high as he wanted it. 

 

Agreed that now these things are almost taboo in general for some reason. Whatever it takes to get the club to do what's needed is what needs to happen.

Interestingly, jack has said he didn’t consider himself flexible but his shoulder turn belies a MASSIVE ability to turn...

 

and he had a seldomly implemented driver swing, for going draws, wherein his left foot remained planted...

 

it stemmed from a jack grout drill in which Nicklaus would not lift either foot for the entire swing...he would “roll” on his feet...he and grout noticed [as a teenager] when jack did this drill, he drew the ball...

 

so when jack was a pro, if a draw was called for, he often kept his left heel down...despite the same unimaginable shoulder turn

I always understood Jacks inflexibility to be in relation to his lack of separation between upper and lower body not over rotational range. He couldn't separate his shoulder turn from his hips hence he always felt he made a massive hip turn also.

Jack had the most amazing hip turn....it blows my mind to think what he would do with a modern x-shafted graphite 430 or 460 head....

also worth a repost...especially since he copied jacks swing....and had the greatest 21st century reverse c imho

vijay is so underrated by the golfing world
