At the masters in 73, Ozaki was paired with Miller...

I could only find one picture with Miller in frame...that’s him in the pink pants

Cool putting era(s)

I loved the hands-in-lap age of nicklaus...people bent over trying to get closer...and closer...

andy north is gripping to the metal...

aokis putter must’ve been 10 degrees upright...

Crenshaw had a perfect setup and rhythm

I am sure many of you have noticed this, but aren't all those colors great to see? I tire of seeing pga tour players wearing the same 3 colors with no pattern, no style, nothing to distinguish them from others. With modern fabrics these colors and styles could be used again and we would have something good to look at, instead of seeing 2 guys wear caps and not hats and be distinctive.

Who Els could it be?

Ryo is pronounced with the r and y sound starting with the tongue pushed against the back of the top front teeth, then dropping the tongue and making the O sound. It's an acquired sound that is difficult for many non-Japanese to get it right. There is no real R sound. The R and Y sound more like "ri."

Ishikawa is still to this day and amazing ball striker. It's a mystery that he hasn't won as many tournaments as he could. He hits it in the precise middle if the clubface more consistently than anyone measured on tour. He made so much money in Japan, especially after shooting a 58 as a teenager on tour, that he didn't have to play golf anymore. His father was a banker and he pushed him to turn professional so he could pay off all the debts making Ryo the player he was. There is no such thing as junior golf in Japan, so he had to pay full boat to play golf and it was expensive near where they lived.

Ishikawa got in a little trouble in Japan because he got a drivers license from California (I believe, or Hawaii) during a tournament. He was 17 years old. He was stopped in Japan for something and showed that license, which is a no-no in Japan. He could not get a drivers license in Japan until 18 years old. He had to drop out of sight for a while to pay the social penalty of contrition. He always wears a band around his right upper arm. There is a rumor that it's to hide a tattoo and that would be a big, big problem, since only yakuza have tattoos. He wouldn't be able to play golf anywhere in Japan with a visible tattoo. Big, BIG problem. He was so good at such a young age. Maybe he started to think about it too much as he got older.

I was lucky enough to watch Ishikawa hit some shots an an Open Championship appearance a few years back. I'd echo your thoughts about it being a mystery why he hasn't won more and achieved global success. As a striker of the ball he is hugely impressive. An absolute flusher. In the same category as Lyle, Norman, Woosnam, Faldo, Els, Duval and co. when it comes to generating a crunching fizz and the laser-like flight off the irons. As we all know there's more to golf than just middling it, but he really is a stellar striker. Absolute top of the tree.

Plus I love the history of golf

glad u re enjoying...

Embarrassed how much time Ive spent finding matching outfits of Poulter and his 70s counterparts…

RYO outfits were pretty easy to find [on the previous threads page] because he often said who and why he had his clothes made in an interview maybe 10 years ago…

I always loved RYO’s  clothes[pants especially] were 100% bespoke...

Late 70's early 80's appear to have been a magical age for golf.  Great names of years past along with the new crop of players that were to become greats in their own rights.  The proliferation of logos and advertisements hadn't gotten to the point where it spoiled the "look" of the player or game.

The clubs.  Man the clubs.  Guys combing thrift stores looking for the perfect Mac driver from the 50's.  Lead tape.  Nickel-sized worn spots on the faces.  Really, worn down spots cause guys weren't playing new iron sets every season.

Glad to see Ishikawa get some love in this thread, as you can tell by my avatar I'm a big fan. If you would have asked 10 years ago who would be the first Japanese player to win a major, he would have probably been the name you'd pick. Crazy how far his game has fallen (at least in the US), he's still young enough though to make a go at it here.

his Payne Stewart tribute was really cool…

also illustrates Payne’s sensibilities…he said at the time he wanted to give Augusta respect by wearing tuxedo knickers….that’s awesome

and that Ian paid tribute to Payne’s gesture over 20 years later is equally cool imho

@Christosterone If we can make requests, I would like to see some George Knudson.  In the early SWWOG vids you can find on youtube he just exudes cool.  He almost looked like a beatnik at times out there playing but it always looked very effortless.

He also had a very varied look from early in his career to later.

he was a boss

the leaderboard at the 69 masters was unbelievable…

weiskopf, casper, january and he lit up the back 9…January dropped a 66 on a burned out augusta…

Great mention btw…the fact he wore an Egyptian ankh necklace was awesome

and ur description of him was perfect…he would’ve fit right in with Kerouac and Ginsberg..
