Gary players golf game was sublime…

Absolute monster for 2 decades…

 

I especially love his swing in the 60s…and he could putt lights out

 

absolute assassin…plus he gave [his idol] elvis tips!

Tom Kite 1.0 was a boss….he and Crenshaw were lag putting in the era of wristy punch strokes and their brilliant teacher, harvey pennick, had them swinging with the coolest reverse c moves this side of jack and Johnny…

 

anyhow, he rocked on and off the course….and played piano

I went to school with his son Daniel, this was the late 90's so he dad was still a known name within British golf. His son disliked golf but played for the school team, he was a good player but I think he felt gold robbed him of time with his dad.

I've always personally felt the Player is the "forgotten" member of the Big 3. He's a world star, one of the greatest players in history but he's not given the idol status of Nicklaus or Palmer. I've heard the older golfers talk of how growing up they imagined themselves being Nicklaus or Palmer but never hear people saying they grew up imitating Player.

Gary Player thinks Senior majors should count toward the total majors of any player.

 

Nicklaus said that if Player had his way the "Hong Kong 4-Ball" would be considered a major.

he was astoundingly great….

and he loves golf like wrxers do…

Having met the guy in person on a day out at Wentworth (see profile picture) were he spared 10 mins of his morning and joined my wife and I for coffee as he had "no were better to be" I can't say enough good things about him.

 

Agree @Christosterone that he has the enthusiasm levels for the game that match WRXers and yes sometimes that enthusiasm comes across badly/misunderstood but no question that the guy could play golf as well as anybody.

One of golfs most influential players, Gene Sarazen. 

 

He is one of five players to win each of the Career Grand Slam. He has a total of 48 PGA tour wins, including 7 majors. One thisrd of the dominate trio who dominated golf during the 1920's along with Jones and Hagan.

 

In 1935 Sarazen hit "the shot heard 'round the world" at during the 1935 Masters when on the fifteenth hole in the final round he hit the equivalent of a modern day 4 wood 232 yards into the hole, scoring a albatross. At the time he was trailing Craig Wood by three shots. The albatross allowed him the catch Wood. Sarazen then parred the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to preserve the tie and the following day, the pair played a 36-hole playoff, with Sarazen winning by five shots.

 

Sarazen is credited with inventing the modern sand wedge, which debuted and used to win the 1932 Open Championship at Prince's Golf Club.

 

At the  age of 71, Sarazen made a hole-in-one at The Open Championship in 1973, on the "Postage Stamp" at Troon in Scotland.

Disclaimer: he didn’t have a 70s reverse c so don’t be sad when u see a more modern swing despite the amazing clothes 🙂

the reverse c was more about a big hip turn and MASSIVE weight shifting…

 

footwork was of paramount import…jack and Monty would often “bounce” back to their back foot as a reflex from the weight shift and completion of swing…

 

johnny Miller and Greg norman had the most aggressive reverse c swings which saw zero weight on their right leg after impact which often saw their right foot glide forward and their left foot, taxed by torque and weight, would slide open…

 

look at Johnny’s foot work….it’s marvelous

I was all set to make a "built like a linebacker" joke on account of Foley being about 5'6" and Irwin having played a little football, but it turns out that's actually quite close to the truth.  Getty images says:

IIRC, Irwin was on staff with Wilson through most of the 80s and into the 90s.  At that time they (and of course PING) were one of the few pushing laminate woods so I think you're dead on there.  That seemed to be Wilson's preferred color scheme too--black painted, with red inserts.
