Anyone remember Brian Watts?

He had a very successful career in Japan and was consistently ranked in the world top 100. After 1999, he fell off the map.

I remember Brian Watts. I followed him for a few holes when the PGA Championship was in my neck of the woods in 1999. He was a bit of a mysterious figure to us here, but it was easy to see why he had the success he did. He had a solid game and a pretty swing.

Remembered for obvious reasons but I believe not many people know he actually won the 1987 Los Angeles Open on the PGA Tour which is still played today.

He also had 6 Japanese Tour wins as well.

Another nice deep-cut Ibanesto. Thank you, they are enjoyed.

For my fellow lefties: Bob Charles, the original world-class southpaw.

he was something...a swing tinkerer who worked on his game all the time...

His shoulder turn was bananas, even on his follow thru...

had a Vijay quality to his swing with the amazing shoulder turn(s)...though it was not a reverse c like Vijays

Though he did have the flying elbow like jack...

heres Bob in technicolor 🙂

Bravo sir. Excellent pictorial.

His swing was about as upright as they come. I bet his irons were significantly altered to accommodate that. Great tempo though; always loved his tempo.

He did have a mini reverse C going on. Probably more like the first half of a parenthesis 🙂  He also had a magnificent head of hair, especially in that second picture. He looks like Tom Jones.

I'm pretty sure thats some Taylor Made (Burner Bubble era) prototype.  That bronze color is that era, but that is a tour style head that I don't believe was retail.  The retail versions, which I played, were shaped a little more like the big bertha woods, with a more rounded sole.  This was probably what we would call a low spin head today, and of course he has a X100 in there not the Bubble shaft.  I actually really liked the Bubble shaft, I always thought it had a nice feel.

haha, I know how that goes. I'm headed to the barber right now. The wifey has had enough of my attempt to bring the 70's back with my hair.  I guess I'll have to be content with keeping them alive with my reverse C follow through on the course.

For my fellow lefties: Bob Charles, the original world-class southpaw.

I still remember this happening!

In 2007 Charles became the oldest golfer to make a cut on the European Tour at the Michael Hill New Zealand Open. Charles shot a 68 in the second round, beating his age by three strokes.[4] He would go on to finish in a tie for 23rd place.

Charles was 71 years old.

He tied with Marc Leishman. He beat David Horsey, Jamie Donaldson, Marcus Fraser, Danny Lee, Damien McGrane, Daniel Chopra, Phil Tataurangi, Scott Strange and Michael Campbell to name a few ET/PGA Tour winners (and 1 major champion).

That is a considerable accomplishment. Doing something like that in a senior event at that age would be noteworthy, let alone a regular event.

You’re a student of the game IBanesto. You, Chris, and the others have really kept this thread going strong. I’m going to make an effort to do the same. I can always count on this thread to give me a lift when I need it.

Interesting sidenote and Based on my own research and obsession for many years…

A man by the name of Dick Mayer is the first known instance of the reverse C that I’ve ever found…

He turned pro in 1949...someone may have beat him to this swing but I’ve never seen em

while lord Byron is credited with the first modern swing, Mayer’s swing style would become the mainstay of the worlds elite for 4 decades....

hardly any pics exist but this dude had a 1975 Nicklaus/Weiskopf/Miller/Watson swing starting in 1949....

total boss

Love this one iBanesto!  I always wondered how the 85 Open played out.  Dude was rolling until the double chip.  Even with all that he was right there at the end!  He almost holed a bunker shot on 18 for the tie.

I always find the discussion/argument regarding the reverse C and it's injuries interesting.

So many people seem to consider it a hazard to the back but it was the mainstay style for 4 decades. Surely it couldn't be that bad for a back if it was in vogue for so long.

Personally I think modern equipment has been more detrimental to the decline of the reverse C than anything else.

Some speculate it was necessary to hit the ball higher with the old persimmons and irons - any truth to that?  I know Watson talked more about consistency when he worked out the changes to his swing.  Still, it seemed like plenty thought it was tough on your back swinging like that or at least blamed it for some issues.  No idea here.

Lesser known jack photos...

At 14 jack was at his home course and a man with the biggest forearms he had ever seen was alone on the range hitting balls in a driving rain storm...

Jack went inside and asked the pro “who is the guy with the big forearms hitting balls in a storm?”

the pro replied, “that’s our national amateur champion, Arnold Palmer.”

this was 1954...jack was almost 15 at the time...

which may or may not have led to jack getting exponentially bigger and stronger...he has never said

Jack’s first decade on tour saw him adopt the “bulk” philosophy...I am always amused when Bryson, who I quite like, is credited with “discovering” mass = length in golf...

Jack would go on a massive diet and 69 and 70 to relieve strain on his knees and hips…

He explains to this day that he lost about 15 yards off the tee...

anyhow, the original bulkenstein in some photos maybe y’all aren’t as used to seeing

Not enough Seve lately in this thread. I posted some of these (or similar ones?) much earlier in the thread, but the board switchover ate them.  Say what you will about Tiger or Jack or whoever, but IMO Seve was as naturally talented as anyone who ever picked up a club.  Something about the gift he had was different from anyone else I ever saw play.  Very special.
