2 club challenge

Yesterday I played a match against a guy, pick any 2 clubs you want to play with. I played a 7 and a putter. He played driver And 8 iron. It took me 2 shots to get even with his driver then I would stil have an average of 100 yards left to the green. He beat me, he putted with his 8 iron and it didn't hurt him too bad. What would you guys play for the same bet?

7 Wood and 8 Iron. I could manage chip/pitch with the 8 and not lose to terribly much off the tee with the 7 wood.

I have done literally this. I found putter was a waste of a club.

 

I went 3 iron and 8 iron. Fairly easy to putt with a 3 iron. I shot 39 with a Birdie on our back 9 the last time i did this, and from the tips too

I think I would take 4/5 iron with 9iron/pw. Setup would work well around my track either way.

Hybrid/4 iron and 9 iron/PW...I'm comfortable with "blading" a short iron to replace having a putter and actually do it as a drill sometimes during practice. Sometimes the lowered expectations and not caring will make up for not having a putter.

We do this a lot, but our rules are always 3 clubs, one of which has to be a putter. It’s amazing how little your scores differ from a full bag. Makes you rethink worrying about whether you have the right shafts in your wedges...

I played once last year with 6 & 58 (with a putter also) & shot my average score.

When the one club tournaments happen, most use 6 or 7 iron. I agree with MtlJeff, putter is a waste. I would go 5 iron maybe with PW?

Yeah don’t play golf to have fun, that was his first mistake.

 

2 iron and 9 iron. Could hit a lot of shots with the 2 iron and anything high would be the 9. 2 would be easy to putt with too

5 iron & 9 iron would probably be about as reasonably optimal as I could get.

2 clubs is tough.... I'd probably pick a 18-19* club (either 5w or 3h) and a 8 or 9i. Definitely not driver or putter.... I want the two most versatile clubs in my bag, and I think the hybrid or 5w is good for any shot off the tee, or anything outside of about 180-190 yards. You can also do some chipping with it depending on pin location. A short iron is a must because you need a club you can hit into greens with, take on par 3's and also do your chipping and pitching with. Would also potentially serve as a putter but in this case I might use the 5w/hybrid to putt with like Sergio did last year when he broke his putter.

There are a lot of shots that can be made with the one/two iron if you are able to play the roll out. I wonder what a 1i and 56° combo would play like?

You can hood the 8 iron down and get extra distance, or open the face and get wedge loft. I don"t think you can get enough distance from the 56* club.

I'm playing a 3 club tournament in a few weeks. Lots of guys are planning on taking a putter with them.... I can't wait to take all of their money.

I think with 3 club tourney putter makes sense since its a club that you'll use for 40% of your shots.

 

I'd go 3H and 9i probably.
