Question about Bayonet.

I will be playing Bayonet for the first time next Saturday and after looking at the scorecard and there is quite a disparity between the white and blue tees. The white tees are 69.4 131 at 5945 yards and the blue tees are 72.8 135 at 6641 yards

 

I typically max out at 6600 yards assuming not all of the length is in the par 4's which it isn't at Bayonet. Does the blue tees play shorter than the card? I am thinking I should play from the white tees the first time regardless. My drives are about 225. Looking forward to Saturday!

 

Am I correct in thinking they really should have a blended tee option on the card?

Play the whites. Bayonet is very demanding tee to green and does not play short.

Both are great courses. The shaping of the fairway bunkering on the Black is diabolical. It lulls you to sleep the first few holes and you think you might have an easy time of it. But it just chips away at you.

Several years ago I played Bayonet from the white tees and had a really good score.

 

I didn't think the course was that tough. The next day I went back and played the blues and the course chewed me up.

 

I would play the whites.

I've played it twice from the blues. The effective yardage is longer on many holes because of elevated greens and uphill shots into many greens. It's a tough test.

Might want to ask about the greens out there. I played Bayonet over the 4th of July weekend and they had a mower that leaked oil over numerous greens on the back. A few of those greens looked like they were in real trouble. I don't know how they look now, I hope all is well.

Just played them both Monday. That 6600 is more like 6900-7000!! Catch any rough and you will be staring a 200-230 shot. Had some fog in the morning on Bayonet and the ball went no where.

Ah I miss those days :)

You definitely need a solid ball striking round there to come away with a 1/2 decent score.

Ya you think they could have the raters come out and give them a GHINable combo tee.

They could pick 6 holes (6,8,9,12,13,17) from the white and the rest from the blue and that shaves off 300yds, while not turning all the long 4s into mid-rangers, so some good pokes are still needed.

As another person mentioned, it plays longer than the card says. So close to sea level and foggy sometimes makes for shorter shots.

^They couldn't have gotten too bad since they had the PGA Pros there a month and a bit ago... hopefully :)

@Putt - Used to love the early morning gloam. Start out wearing a jumper, by the time you play your afternoon round, it's all nice and sunny.

Didn't see any of this on Monday July 30th...wasn't looking though. Greens were great on both courses.

I played Black Horse the weekend after July 4 and the greens were OK. It looked like they had been punched earlier but they were fast. I've played both before and I have to say that this latest time I thought the bunkers were in pretty sad shape. Ratty edges and not very well maintained sand. Just stay out of them I guess.

Original poster here. I am sure you are all waiting with great anxiety to hear how I did lol. First off I really liked the course and thought it was a tough, but fair layout. The fairways were cut nice and short which is getting harder to find these days and the greens were fast which I also like. The greens were a little bit brown in some places, but I did not see any oil damage that was mentioned in an earlier post. Maybe that happened on the other course? The rough was very thick and you need to stay out of it on the longer holes. The fairway bunkers are extremely difficult and it is hard to to get a lie that is not near a lip. Imo this is a first shot golf course as I was fairly comfortable out in the fairways, but I also had a very good day with the irons so maybe that clouds my judgement.

 

So I played the white tees and glad I did being my first time there. I shot a 77 (40/37). The front nine I was playing well until I played #7,8, and 9 at 4 over. I birdied #2. The back nine I had three bogies and had back to back tap in birdies on 15 & 16 and almost made a long birdie putt on 17. Not going to lie that felt really good. :taunt:

 

i will definitely go back sometime and probably continue to play the white tees. In a perfect world they would have a blended tee which would be perfect for someone like me that is a low handicap non big hitter type. Bayonet is the definitely the type of course that a bad day off the tee can result in complete and utter disaster!!!!!

I hit that tree on the left the time I was there! Attempted a punch shot under its branches to get up near the green, but I got rejected.
