I've gone to Damon Lucas the last few years. He's at my club and Lake Presidential.

I would recommend him. I think he's also nuts busy. I heard him telling a student he's busy all day 7 days a week.

These are going to have to be cheap right? If you can buy a new Cleveland wedge for $99 say, you're not going to pay $129 for a Costco wedge.

But then again I thought their putter would be in the $69-89 range and not $150 so what do I know.

Hoop was rocking a Cleveland Huntington Beach 11 this weekend that looked pretty sweet. $130. I played a Cleveland HB1 some years ago and it was quite good, and moved on to a $300 Piretti soley for tinkerings sake.

With only slight exaggeration, putters and wedges are just hunks of metal. There isn't much technology to them. They haven't changed in 30+ years. There's no reason they can't be done well inexpensively.

Good morning gents, has anyone recently played Mattaponi? Haven't been able to find recent reviews. Used to make sure to stop there on every trip South. Loved that place. Assume it is still a hidden gem?

Played it "illegally" during the Great Maryland Golf Shutdown of 2020. It was in great shape (April?) It was crowded as hell too - parking lot was full. It was the first time there for me, wonderful course. I can see why people rave about it.

We've had a stretch of some serious heat in the region - I can see it getting baked out pretty quick.

@eagle1997 thanks brother. We're headed to Williamsburg this weekend to play Horseshoe Gold and Green. I insisted on playing Mattaponi on the way down or back. We're all in the D.C. area. Baked is not a bad thing necessarily...

You guys remember a few months ago, I shared the story about the kid at my Dad's club who set the course record (59?) and he was rocking the bucket hat and glasses?

Well, yesterday, he's in the finals of the Maine Junior. Tied with another kid going into the 36th hole, a par 5.

The other kid knocks it to 8 feet for eagle.

The Bucket Hat has a 193 yards into the hole from the rough and JARS IT for a 2. LOLhttps://www.centralmaine.com/2020/07/29/waterville-highs-lindsay-cote-wins-girls-maine-junior-golf-title/

You never know. I played junior golf with a great high school player in NH. Never thought about him again after I graduated - no one cares if you are a great high school player in NH. Twenty+ years later I'm down at Sea Island and I see a signed pinflag hanging in the locker room, he had won the US Mid Am there a few years earlier. The playing season up north certainly doesnt help LOL.

What a story though. Can you imagine being on the other side of that?

If anyone is feeling froggy...

The next Hive event is at Richland GC on Sunday August 23rd. Modified Stableford. We've got 17 so far, with a cap of 32. Straight tee times, starting at 10am. Open to all, prizes for gross and net - you'll just need a official index to be a part of the net comp.

PM me for more details.

Club Champ Mini Recap :

First, after spending so much mental energy on prepping for this weekend, I really don't feel like re-living everything.

Suffice it to say, it was a tough, well-played weekend. Losing scores over the course of 7 matches were roughly 70, 73, 74, 74, 74, 75, 78?

I had Tumor Saturday morning and that was a battle. I was hitting the ball really well, but he was getting up and down and he was putting great. I was 2 up going into 14 and he birdied. He just missed putts on 15 and 16 that would have won, so I was 1 up going into 17, and won it with a good par on a tough par 3. Very good match. I had B2B on 7/8. 8 was about a 70 foot putt.

He birdied 12 and 14. His wedges and putting were better than me all day. his par on 12 was incredible because he had to hit a low punch from the rough next to and under a tree to an elevated green with a false front. It was an A++ shot. I was 3-0-1 on par 3s which was the big difference. It's funny because while I was warming up that morning on the range, the reigning champ goes, "are you hitting 5 irons off the tee?" I generally feel like long par 3's are an "overlooked" place to win holes. I've hit tons of long irons over the last 2 weeks on the range and I think it came through in how the match played out. Over the last month, I've battled a left miss, especially with long irons, and I was dead in CC if I didn't tame it.

Anyway, I'm not sure why the champ asked me that, but I THINK he thought I was hitting shots to get ready for the second match, which would take place on the short/tight course. And i was NOT doing that.

So, anyway. . .we get to the tight/short course and I've got the 5 time champ. I told him that week if I played him out there, I was going to hit driver everywhere, aim aggressively, putt aggressively.

Very first hole, he hits the smart 5-iron. I smash D down the middle. He hits to 12/15 feet. I hit a wedge to 5 feet. He makes. I miss.

next hole, I hit driver and I'm inside him again. I leave a downhill putt DFCS.

Next hole, I've got like 162 to a back pin. I hit an 8 iron from the rough that never left the stick. . .and flew right over the top of it into the rough. Bad chip. Lose.

I'm 3 down after 4 and it feels like I'm playing the terminator. He just doesn't miss anything. But, I make a few birds, and win a couple holes and I was still 3 down going into 13. Solid stretch for me. But, he wins that. I have another great look at bird on 14 and miss. So, he's dormie with 4 to go and I lost hole 15. He was -4 at the time.

TVJ played the Champ 36 on Sunday and it was a similar story. Champ was 4 or 5 under through 30 holes and that was it.

The field was missing 1 or 2 studs (but this is true most years, so whateber), but TVJ and I (and I assume Tumor) were rather happy at our showing. we never don't play for something and we make each other putt almost everything and I think it tended to show over the course of the tournament.

Very fun weekend. As opposed to last weekend, nobody won a match (like I did) with their B-game.

Awesome job City, nothing lousy about losing to the 5x champ.

Well losing sucks period but you know what I mean.we never don't play for something and we make each other putt almost everything and I think it tended to show over the course of the tournament.

I've been saying this for a long time and this year more than ever I am convinced that it has had real and substantive effect on my mindset. Even if you are playing for $5. Or beers. Or bragging rights. I dont think I am ever out there just to put a score on my card.

I snuck over to hit a few balls at Burke Lake this morning, sensing that my Wed match might be cancelled and the course closed for a few days. BL has replaced nearly all their mats with the "shaggy" mats, I dont know what brand they are or what they are called. But they are definitely nicer to stand on for an hour or two. I think the wedges can get a little sticky when hitting them but otherwise they are awesome. Wish I knew what brand they are because if/when I ever move and put a hitting area in a garage, thats what I would put in.

Played Chambersburg Country Club yesterday in PA. #18 is a blind drive over a hill then down to the green. it's about 130 yards to the crest of the hill, and the hole is only just over 300 yards, so you want to wait until the group in front is on the green before hitting. Asked my wife to take her cart to the top to see if it was safe to hit. Was walking back to the tee and saw this:

image.png

It's a mirror on the top of two telephone poles, and if you stand on that concrete square, you can see the green. Very awesome way to solve the blind drive problem.

Played there once probably 8 years ago now. Super fun.

From what I remember, it didn't play particularly long (although we might have been playing up one from the backs. But really fun course to try to plot your way around.
