There's a small course just outside of St Andrews that has an actual submarine periscope on the first tee so the starter knows when to send guys off the tee.

I know many folks here are in Maryland and haven't seen a lot of talk about any of the Twin Lakes courses, but hoping to trigger some other lurkers here...with a (somewhat) random question for the group:

 

I have been in the area off and on for 10 years and the last 5 years consistently. Over those 5 years or so, Twin Lakes has been my early morning weekend track. Typically, I play as a single and book week-of for a Saturday or Sunday (< 7:00AM round). Over the past few years and earlier this summer I found it fairly easy to get a tee time for a single earlier than 7 on one of the two courses out there. The last couple of weeks, it's been impossible -- including 7 days out. I know that there have been many more people golfing this year due to CV19, but it's still surprising to me. Are there that many casual golfers that are booking early tee times (or forcing more regular golfers to book earlier and earlier)?

 

All of the Twin Lakes tee times for next Monday morning are booked until 9AM. Kind of surprising for a Monday a full week away. Does anyone know if it's possible to script a bot to book tee times as soon as they are released? It seems like this might be something that's happening? Alternatively, something quirky could be going on with the FCPA EZLINKS, so I'm going to call over to see, but curious if anyone else has experienced this?

Friday - played Golden Horseshoe Gold in Williamsburg and the really cool 9 hole Spotswood Course with Reynolds, Marshall and a friend. Marshall shot a ridiculous 65 ...

Saturday - we had a group of 13 Hivers meet us for two trolls format rounds at Royal New Kent. Yes - the course allowed a 5some.

It's real here now. Heavy rain and 30+ sustained winds. Unknown gusts. So loud you can't hear the TV. Hope the power stays on. Lots of window leaks. House shaking like crazy. Last time I was in a storm like this was Gloria in 85 or 86. Wild.

I don't know about that spot specifically, but whenever I see a block of times just missing, I think the course is up to something. I was looking at Waverly yesterday and they didn't have a tee time after 1;20 so I called and it turns out they have leagues going off at 1:30.

but, the earliest block on a monday morning in August seems odd.

That small course near St. Andrews is called Elie. One of my favorite memories in Scotland. Zero par 5s, only two par 3s. Probably my second favorite course we played for the dollar amount after the Old Course. Small pro shop I wish I had bought out when I was there. The first hole goes straight up the hill, then flattens out. No one was out there so we just took pictures with the periscope because it was so unique.

Spent some time at the Pine Ridge range to get some video in yesterday, to see if I could figure out the source of my major power leak recently:

Nothing too groundbreaking, just stuff that I've worked on with instructors over the years. Got to pull out the old notes and put some range hours in.

So a few years ago I had bought some leather samples to try and make my own yardage books. But between buying a good one soon thereafter from Sunfish and a great one at Carnousite - I never did anything. Decided to mess around and build a couple of sample bag accessories this week that actually came out better than I thought - or at least will when the right snaps come in. First one is just a simple loop to hold the larger players golf towels. I've now lost two towels this year from just putting them in between clubs - and not keeping track of them - and they dont easily fit through the towel ring. Built a simple loop that snaps together around the top bag handle to attach - and then snaps back on itself. Not bad, easy to grab and go. Bought the wrong kind of snaps that came apart but they stayed together long enough to show the idea works.

The second is something I had thought of which is a way to dry or hang a few gloves to dry out. Ended up taking the simple way out, thick strip of material with three vertical cuts. Glove tab goes through and attaches back on itself. Thankfully this is not a year round need but its simple and hangs off the side of the bag while you're pushing along.

Of all the things I thought I'd learn in the pandemic, learning how to attach snaps to fabric was not on that list. At least the junky ones I bought held up long enough for a proof of concept, had to order some thicker snaps that will work through leather. I need to go play video games now or something...

Athletic Motion Golf (both instagram and youtube) has some really great content lately on the dreaded EE. Couple of simple drills (like placing wedge under your trail foot and not letting up on pressure until after you make content) and some really great visualizations.

Making stuff is fun. During pandemic, I've macrame'd some hangers for house plants. I've made my own head covers before. I sew patches onto stuff. I've "modified" bucket hats. I've darned my socks. You can do a lot with a needle and thread.

I tell you, "pick a number. That's the number of golfers you get to pick, and I get the field. . .here's the catch : if I like that number, I get to pick that many golfers and you get the field."

You get 4 golfers. After what "day" of the tournament do you think is fair? Like if I give you 4 golfers going into Sunday, you love that. Probably even Saturday. Going into Friday is probably close.

Read between the lines : I don't think Eagle is offering a fair bet. Nota Bene : I'm the one that took his original bet.

That said, I don't think it's a sucker bet. I took it. It's just not a great bet. For some tournaments, I'd like it.

Its definitely a sucker bet if there are no odds attached. You could take the 4 betting favorites and you should still be getting at least 4-1 on your money if the other guy gets the field. Think about it, most online books will offer win odds on 40+ golfers and then the field bet after that is still even money. So for only 4 guys? (thumbs down f art noise)

But its gambling so who cares if its a sucker bet if youre happy with it. I have 8 or so golfers in my win pot this year and a handful of Top 20 bets too. There were so many great guys in the 40-80 to 1 area. And I'll almost never take a favorite or anyone on short odds but I took a piece of Brooks to win and Top 20.

I don't actively gamble these days, but that doesn't sound right for a field bet. 40 golfers vs. "field" at even money? THAT would be a sucker bet. When's the last time that would have hit. . .Rich Beem?
