FAbb's criteria are cracking me up.

  • Looks like his 4-iron
  • Plays like his 4-iron
  • Shaft length is slightly longer than his 4-iron
  • Loft is slightly strong than his 4-iron

How about you buy the 3-iron from your set, dummy.

Moar club orders...excellent.

I am still waiting on my 790/770 combo set to be fully shipped. I ordered the 6/7 irons in the P790s (2* weak) and the 8/9/P/A in the P770. I love the 770s for a lot of the reasons Fabb talked about. Its a smaller blade size, looks great at address but more importantly just FEELS great. And this may sound like a silly thing to complain about but after 2 years with the M5s, I just had too many yardage gaps in the bottom of my bag because of how far I hit the short irons. So if the 770s are all 2 or so * weaker than the M5s, perfect. I dont really need a 9 iron that goes 150 yards but if it goes 138 yards or 140 yards reliably every time, thats better.

As far as the utility search goes, been there. Like you, I chop mine way down. My SIM 2i is at 39.25" which I think is a great length for that long iron/utility club. I found the 40-41" clubs to just be way too long especially on tee shots, it just felt awkward to pull out a hybrid or really light iron with a super long shaft. I've thought about toying around with a 5 wood but I like the 2i so much that it just hasnt come up...yet. Currently use it on 3-4 tee shots and a par 3 at MV so it gets good use.

Driver head off last night to J for some hot melt. With the shite weather this week, should have it back well before I really need to get out again.

Have a lesson scheduled for next week, an hour to work on bunkers and short game. My bunker play has been so trash the last few times out, I honest to god felt like a beginner in there. I really feel like our pro is going to take one look at me and fix it but I need it fixed before next season.

Not sure what else I could tinker around with although with some decent shop credit left, its always a possibility.

My bunker game was a mess a few months ago.  I almost scheduled a lesson to work on just bunker shots, but somehow felt like it would be a "waste" of a lesson, even though I could easily throw away a few shots a round with a bladed bunker shot or two.  I had always used the "traditional" technique of opening my stance to the left of the target and then slicing across the ball, but somehow that turned into either a thin bladey mess or a shank hosel adjacent disaster.  I watched Rory's technique on some random You Tube video and he sets up square to the target so I tried that.  Now if I setup square and focus on maintaining my knee flex, I can get out of the bunker a lot more consistently.  I'm no Seve yet, but I feel like changing my setup helped me a lot.  YMMV.

Usually I'm in favor of working it out myself. But there are a couple of on course bunker shots right now that terrify me. So taking me on course for a half hour just to do it "out there" is going to help me a lot more than just ripping practice bunker shots.

I just dont practice them much, thats really the bottom line. And frankly I can go a few rounds without having a bunker shot - so between that and not practicing it, its a simple solution.

I think.

So in reality, probably not.

@ALTSean check this out, pretty good insight from some decent golfers.... but seriously, I was surprised to hear how they played some of those shots.

Makes sense and it can only help to see a pro.  I don't think any of us expect to get up and down for a sand save all the time, but it really hurts to leave a greenside bunker shot in the bunker or blast one 50 yards over the green. 😞

They've been putting great stuff on the TM youtube channel this year.  I watched that video over and over when it was posted.  It's gold.  I could watch stuff like that for hours.

Exactly, those are the two things I want to avoid.

I watched DJ hit that left handed driver shot at least a hundred times.

But don't forget to factor in that you don't want your juiced 3-iron to go far, just a consistent distance.  So make sure it isn't TOO juiced.

Sooo... a juiced FOUR-iron?

I did get my KHT Autoflex 505 driver shaft to try out. Hopefully will try to do that when I’m off work for the holidays and see what’s the deal with this shaft. TXG recently did a test for the regular swing speed folks and the results were interesting.

Will report once I get a chance to do testing.

Swing faults come into play as well... lie angle is not a magical bullet but will allow you to get closer to the center more than playing a lie angle wrong for you.

Yup... impact moved about a ball width into the toe with the extra length and no bend.

Push Draws are now Push Cuts... no good.

Should be fine once they're bent. Otherwise... 130X is just too much

Anyone have any experience with PXG 0211 irons or those elevate shafts? Price seems waayyy too good to be true and very tempting. Cheaper than used sets are going for on eBay by a few hundred dollars.

No experience, but I saw the Elevate 95 and read somewhere it was similar to the XP95 which is my favorite shaft right now.  I'm guessing the tour version is around the 115-120g version with stiffer tip section/lower ball flight?

I guess you would need that XP shaft for your 6 deg driving iron.

I think Dom might have had Elevate before but I don’t think he has the 95. I think he went heavier so I’d reach out to him.
