Mizuno JPX919 Tour, Hot Metal and Forged irons

Recommended Posts

I'm very tempted, thinking 4 thru 6 in 919 HM and 6 thru GW in 919 F. When swing is really off I'd go with the HM 6, otherwise will start the HMs at the 5 iron.

For what it's worth, I have last year's Forged. I tried a split set originally but ultimately just went Forged through the whole bag. If I were to do a split set myself, I'm not sure I'd get HM at the six iron. Four and five, maybe. The six iron isn't too challenging to hit. You may want to at least give both a rip and see for yourself. Just my two cents.

I agree with you on this. I tried the 5 & 6 in the MMC fli-hi blended into my 900 Tours. I had the lofts bent to match. I hit them ok, but just had more continuity with the 900T 5 & 6. I am going to buy a JPX Fli-Hi in a 4 iron when it comes out.

Man that is almost exactly what I plan to order. I am waiting to see if I want the Forged (most likely) or Hot Metal and if I am going to blend them at all. Maybe a 4 iron in the HM or Fli-Hi when it comes out. Trying to decide on a shaft too. Probably KBS Tour X.

I went to GG and hit the forged on Monday, they didn't have the heads so I hit a 7i from the stock set. A couple of odd results;

1. I am not a long hitter but I have always lost distance with every Mizuno I have tested, but I didn't with these.

2. I have always needed a +2, this has been true for Cally, Cobra, and Mizuno. With these, I was hitting the standard with great results.

TLDR: Mizuno 919 Forged are in the bag

I think if you can quantify the difference between the 900 line to the 'new and improved' 919 line it would be well worth it. If you can't I'd say it would be money wasted that could have been invested in a great set in the 900 line. That opportunity ends with the 919 release, naturally. At least to order custom.

The 919's have a significant price jump over the 900's and are potentially the same thing in terms of playability. This is the first time I've noticed Mizuno aggressively upcharge.

To end on a positive note, at least Mizuno is finally getting smarter by using a 7-iron head on their fitting carts rather than their traditional 6-iron. I believe the average player starts to struggle at the 6 so why have that on a fitting cart? I'm glad they wised up.

I thought both sets retailed for $1200. I understand they marked down the 900's since they are being discontinued, but I don't think they upped the MSRP on the 919's over the 900's (at least in the Tour models).

That appears to be correct now that they are actually released. My information came from what I thought was a pretty reliable source, the Mizuno equipment rep that covers my region. He was wrong and therefore I was too. Both sets were released at the same price point: $1200 for a set of 8 irons. (JPX 900 Tour and JPX 919 Tour)

What is the purpose of the badging on the forged? Often badging on cast clubs is partly for performance (vibration dampening etc). Obviously there's marketing too. But whats the need for it here. Its forged so it should feel good already. And it might even be a negative appearance wise for Mizuno's target market, but even if we just call neutral appearance wise for arguments sake--- I'm not saying its awful, I'm just curious why its there....is there some performance reason.

In general the thinner a face gets the harsher the perceived feel which is why just about all distance irons have some kind of vibration absorbing tech.

Forged does not automatically mean good feel.

Biggest misconception in golf equipment is that "forged" by itself equals superior/soft feel. Take an MP18 MB blade, miss the sweetspot by half an inch and tell me how soft that forging is. It'll sting like you've got hornets in your hands. Shouldn't it still feel soft and muted no matter where you strike it on the face; I mean it's made if the softest "forged" steel, right?

The soft feel associated with forged MUSCLE BACK blades is mostly due to the design of the clubhead, where there is significant mass directly behind the sweetspot. Pure strikes reward you with that soft and muted feeling of nirvana.

When you create a cavity backed iron, by design that mass is removed and the thinner faces require badges made of polymers or whatever to dampen vibration and improve feel.

like that address pic, hope mine arrive today also.

Thanks for throwing up a few pics.

I love the address pic.

I used my SB1s in June for a week and since then I have been wanting new clubs but patiently waited for these, without hitting them so clad I did. The iron profiles are so similar to my Scratch Blades, still my fave clubs I have ever owned.

It's between i500 and the 919 Forged for me...

Need to hear more about Forged forgiveness and demo the Forged.

I've hit the 900 Forged off grass several times - it's fairly long and the feel is not butter, it is firm/solid, probably due to the miniscule amount of boron. The 919 may be completely different - milled from the sole, less weight in heel, more weight low and out on toe to move COG to center, thinner face -- it all sounds good. But the topline ... looks thickish for this type of club.

I work at a school so better not. Tempting though.

Started raining as soon as was done school so no golf course. Will range after some food.

Will play before school Wednesday and try and get a few holes in tomorrow night, interesting to see how they react on the getting far greener links turf.

Well after my first range session with the Tours.

Look perfect behind the ball.

Feel like a blade when hit.

Hit one off the edge of grooves and still went straight, was shocked.

So far so good, hopefully get 9 holes in tomorrow night or morning first thing.

I am digging the 4-9 Iron approach. I have been looking at doing that myself and letting mack daddy 4 / 3s take over the 46, 50, and 55 degree spots in the bag. I seem to get along better with a set like that.

I'm sold on the tours. That is, unless, Cobra releases info on their new MB soon.

I did it because the Vokey 46 is soooo much better looking than the Mp5.

Full season in now and its been great. gaps are decent - 157 -140, 150 being my soft 9 iron(Mp5 yardages).

I just saw that Koepka donated his 8 iron to Erin Hills. I'm sure he has more than one set of the 900's but thought the timing was interesting. My guess is that he will have the 919's in the bag sooner than later. Ryder Cup?

Given what you have said I would highly encourage you to try the i210. They are not forged but they feel softer to me than the Mizuno JPX 900 Forged, which undoubtedly is almost the same as the 'new' release. Surprisingly forgiving as well with a nice thinnish topline. The i500's are interesting, but a bit odd sounding. Even though it is impossible to do it will sometimes sound like you are caving in the face at impact.

I did hit the i210 on grass - not in a fitted shaft and it was with normal specs. I would need to go power specs to get more out of it although it would not approach the i500.

I thought the i210 was forgiving and feel was softer than 900F or i500 due to that large elastomer insert. Sole is slightly wider than i500 although with the grind, it may be approx the same. Topline was good. The i500 with those lofts was 10-12 yards more carry as compared to the i210 in normal loft. My instructor thought about getting the i500 for himself but was concerned about "consistency."

Our fitting heads arrived for the Tour and Forged. The Tour feels amazing. Going back and forth between the DG120 and a Modus 120. Thinking these will beat out the i210 for my next irons.
