We occasionally get sub 60* mornings in south Florida, and i will stay in bed. My back will not cooperate in the cold so I can’t turn to hit.

I’m 67 and prefer 90+ at dawn.

Winter up north is for the most part dry.

I don't know what North you are talking about, but here in Michigan it seems to be overcast and precipitating 80% of the days in winter.

Ah, a fellow SoFlo Summer Golfer!

I play year around but will admit that I prefer it a bit cooler than that.

I do understand about the back though.

Coldest day I ever spent on a golf course was May 15, 2016. I played with my two sons and nephew. It was a sort of guy's golf outing as that was the spring that #1 son got married.

It was above freezing, but not by much. There was a mixture of rain, sleet and ice pellets. The front nine wasn't too bad as it was protected by the escarpment. The back nine was pure torture as most of the tee blocks were completely exposed. I don't remember exactly what I shot, but it was over 100. My nephew who is a really good player shot 93. Somehow #1 son found his way to an 84. The rest of us could barely more by the time we were finished as it was so raw!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Yeah, last week was 55* at sunrise and i had a tough time for the first three holes. Wearing a fleece jacket didn’t make it any easier, all bulked up.

Summertime i just use my $24 fan connected to the battery.

I'm 66 and as long as there's sun and very little wind I don't mind playing at 45 degrees. Clouds and wind and I'm out.

Out with our senior roll-up today. Sleety rain for first 3 holes and then intermittent sunshine, max 6 degrees C, so, coolish. Easterly wind less than forecast.

Carried set ( Whitehouse maroon leather bag c. 1970s) of Turfriders 2-PW, Original R90 SW brown shaft, Titleist 983K big bat and a Steelhead 5 wood. Putter Controlled Feel Wilson. Fwd tees back 9, 36, front 9, 39.

Beer...2 pints Lancaster Brewery Blonde, might have been a wee dram of malt in there somewhere...ah.. winter golf, can't beat it.

Sounds fun--- If you could post pics i would love to see that Whitehouse leather golf bag. Not to be misconstrued when I say I do not drink I will drink a beer on occasion. I sorta fancied my self as a beer connoisseur of sorts as I would drink any kind of beer. I do know for a fact all you guys from your neck of the woods and Europe in general can pick a good beer. I can remember one mini tour session back in the day there were a couple of guys from the UK and I hung around with them some and those guys turned me on to European beer and man could they pick them!!! Man it is Thanksgiving here and I am off do not have to go anywhere this is making me want a beer. I do have one Pabst Blue Ribbon and one Yeungling in the fridge. Seriously search #texascold on google.

I duck hunt and the Texas guys would usually get a good razzing from people from "up north" due to complaining about the cold when it got down below 40F. But then there were a couple of yankees who made their way down to the gulf coast of louisiana and texas and experienced a wet, damp cold that eats through you. Winter up north is for the most part dry. That changed their tune a bit when they were getting cold in true temps barely into the 40's.

I've played when it was snowing. I walked and it was fun to be the only one on the course. It was one of those deadly quiet, still days where the flakes just floated straight down so it was comfortable for the most part.

Randy and the rest of the Coastal SC guys can attest to this. We get that bone chilling damp cold here and the older one gets the worse it gets. Had some one on here a few years ago razz me about having a wood stove in Coastal SC. I told them spend a damp winter here and they will see. I am real familiar with the different types of cold from trucking all around this country and Canada too in all seasons of weather.

Called into our club this morning to collect some clothing.....raining, a cold breeze and murky. Car park was choc full of retired members cars. They play when I watch TV..and moan about arthritis and needing joint replacement surgery.....I read the papers and had a pint in the warmth.

LMAO

When I first came over here I was approached by the EGGS Captain if I would join them and droned on about how it was a cheap day out, blah, blah, blah we would be delighted to accept you and waited expectantly for me to embrace the moment.

I thanked him and declined.

"May I ask why?".

I then explained that I did not fully approve of EGGS (I hate that label),that a cheap day out was not necessarily a good day out and that above all I loathed the stench of stale p**s and linament.

His jaw dropped and I continued explain that rather than focus on us old farts who want everything for nothing (or cheaper if possible) clubs should focus more on younger members who were still working and had families and whose time to play golf was limited,(I still haven't worked out how to improve their lot!).

I have softened in more recent years and have played Seniors' matches when there has been a shortage of players to represent the club,in notable cases much to my regret,a bloke from Hull who talked non-stop about his part-time job at Halfords and how fortunate they were to have him there to put the manager right and another from the same area who played off 24 handicap and shot approximately 8 over GROSS,recounting on every hole how good these clubs were that he bought off his mate for £50.

Not only 4 hours on the golf course but a further hour during the meal when,in both cases, their playing partners turned away so as not to have to listen!

So,elwhippy, this is what you have to look forward to!

A bunch of boring old sods who discuss, compare and brag about the size of their medication bags and doctor's or hospital appointments, the days of going on the lash and out on the pull have gone and mostly they have no clue about golf either.

Depressed now?

I am......where are my tablets....?

That part about the meds reminded me of something---- I am up early every morning whether working or not just the way I am. One Saturday morning I went around the corner to my course. The seniors group was waiting in the grill room on a frost delay. I know all of them anyhow. And of course the talk turned to doctors and meds. On the one round table they started displaying their meds as if they were collectables or something. There was more stuff on that table than the Wallgreen's up the street had in their pharmacy. I told them I hope the Multi County Drug Task Force does not walk in here right now because we will all go to jail. One of them quipped at me "AW you are so funny Stuey" then everyone cracked up. My MD is a member there and he is one hell of a doctor. I played with him and his son the other day. His son is studying to be a MD himself and is going to Medical University of SC. I told him to go to school consult his Dad and then come in here when the Seniors Group is in a frost delay and get his Drug Education here. I told him he would learn more in here from the seniors group about prescription meds than he can either place. His dad chuckled and said "yep you are right on that one" . Thought about starting a on line Pharmacy School and featuring those guys. I can see it a Pharmacy degree form the University of Indian Wells.

I do not play in the seniors groups either even though technically I am old enough to do so but I am not retired yet. Besides they argue and bicker too much like 6th graders. I have played some as you said as a substitute but then we end up getting thrown out. Most of it is because as my past as a Pro. Most of them think I can still play because they see me in the practice area. Jeez I have not played any serious comp in several years now. The Senior Men's group is slowly dying out now at my course> Some of it due to the natural progression of things and I know of at least 6 or 8 guys that have pulled out and play their own little groups due to the arguing and bickering. If I retire I will more than likely join what is called the Grand Strand Seniors association. Done talked to several members. No one cares what equipment I play or whether I am a ex pro or not. Technically I still am never got my Am status back because I am too cheap to pay the USGA to consider it They also play different courses every week. But then again I do not know if I will commit to that either I like doing my own thing.

Had a chance to play Morecambe yesterday but I couldn't get the day off work... Gutted! Bet it was cold as it was freezing at work in sunny Wigan

A lot of excellent regeneration work is being done at Morecambe. A new large water feature (No, not Morecambe Bay, don't be cheeky!) has replaced a swamp and ugly grove of willow. Large numbers of inappropriate trees are for the chop (Lol) and the drainage is being renovated. It will look much more like MacKenzie's original concept.

Next Spring would be a great time visit, PM me to exchane contact details and we will have a knock + anyone else out there in reasonable driving distance, note, now only 10 minutes from the M6, J34 courtesy of the new Bay Link Road.

Will do, was meant to be playing with the Wigan championship so to be premier league ref who's joined our club. Only recently met him and started playing regularly with him. Needed another as one had dropped out for Morecambe but it was too short notice with work.... Shame!

Well since just about every day here in SoCal is at least in the 70's, I don't face this challenge. However, as a born and bred Midwesterner I really enjoy when Feb. rolls around and it sometimes gets into the fifties and ALMOST NO ONE PLAYS. I get courses virtually to myself.

My pleasure, my Whitehouse bag plus one or two of your old fav clubs here I think.

It's a bit battered with some great re-stitching by the previous owner. Whitehouse and Cox (as they now are) still make high end leather goods but, sadly, not golf bags. I saw a mint twin to mine in Sweden at Bro Balsta (Annika's course) a year or two back at the Swedish Hickory Championships.

Pure class. It's in good hands.

Thanks, osr.

Some people dis old leather bags because of the perceived weight and extra when they get wet.

I shall put this on the scales tomorrow, dry, and say that it doesn't absorb water in rainy weather. It's a totally useable golf bag.

Ouch!!!

I am happy to be corrected but every leather bag I have either seen or owned are unduly heavy because of the steel rods used to stiffen the sides and almost inevitably a clonking great base with metal shoe to prevent scuffing.

The best leather bag I saw was on ebaygum some years ago,a blue Peter Jacobsen carry bag, cannot remember the maker.

Also I assume you are part of the mechanised unit and not carrying that bag?

My pencil bag is laid on the ground between shots, nylon fabric and stitching means it dries out quickly with no danger of rotting.

Totally retro, pre horse drawn, carried, laid on ground in the approved manner. Last Wednesday 'the unit' carried 12 clubs inc. Turfriders as shown. The only thing unseen in the photos is the sheepskin strap cover which helps reduce wear on the pre-Faldo Pringle jumpers. First sign of rain it vanishes into a poly bag in innermost recesses replacing the ancient, but effective, waterpoofs which are instantly donned..

Will that do?

And then we get to 'how do you carry your single strap bag, Sir?'

I say, 'caddy style', over the left shoulder and across the small of the back' (right handers), so you can get the club out and replace it with the right hand without dismounting, mark a card, unscrew a hip-flask or whatever while totally in balance.

All else is extreme naff.

I walked and payed yesterday afternoon. The course was extremely wet. I had called the GM and he told me to walk if I wanted to as much as I wanted to. In my case it was as much as I was able to. I wanted to try out a set of KZG CB Forged Blades I had. Walked 9 holes which was good for me in the wet. I used my older Titleist stand carry bag which really a Sun Mountain. Only carried 10 clubs 5 balls some tees and 2 gloves. Pretty light. Never used the harness Izzo strap set up just single strapped it.

In general, people in this country are over medicated, they want a "miracle pill" for every little aches and pain, even discomfort.

As a personal opinion, I tend to stay away from the irreversible medication as much as I could. Proper diet and a little exercise will rid of many of the "prescribed" medication.

Supposed to be playing at 9am tomorrow. Forecast says three degrees but wind chill down to zero. When we are on the first there will be at least three fourballs of seniors on the nearby eighth and ninth. They start in darkness. Mad. Mad I tell you.....

Same over here,crack of dawn.

I asked once why they insisted on playing so early.

"Eee,so you've got rest of t'day free..."

When I pointed out that they were all retired and every day was a free day I had no response.

I'm not at my best early morning, need to warm up gently like a vintage car........lol
