So now this topic has devolved into "purists" saying you shouldn't wear tank tops? I'm glad I play at a course that doesn't judge people on their appearance, personal hygiene habits, or whatever particular "vices" they may have.

Cargo shorts should never be worn on a golf course. That would be like wearing bluejeans to play cricket or a thong to play basketball.

Cargo short are a way of identifying yourself as the sort of person who wears cargo shorts. Which means you're the sort of person who wants to identify as someone who wears the thing that people wear when they want to identify as people who wear them, and so on. It's like something out of The Matrix.

Back when my Father-in-law was 65 years old, they had a group of seniors that played every morning.

The manager said to always break up in groups of 4, but sometimes they had 2 groups of 5.

They played ready-golf and I couldn't keep up with them.

They could play 18 holes in 3-1\2 hours.

When anyone asked they always said "That's our senior league ".

I used to enjoy watching them play.

It looked like speed-golf.

They had a club out when they got to their ball, and hit.

They wouldn't allow it now.

They have had problems with groups of 10 trying to share 2 or 3 sets of clubs.???

Had a golf partner show up Friday with Cargo shorts on. He showed up Saturday with brand new golf shorts and shoes for good measure. Needless to say he got a bit of heckling from our group. (All in good fun though)

Two weeks ago I was playing at Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens and Michael Jordan was in the foursome directly behind us. He was wearing camo cargo shorts. Probably would have looked like capris on me...lol?

 

I'm certain they're a dress code violation at Mirasol, but I guess they make exceptions for MJ. I'm told he's always in cargos when he plays golf.

Even MJ can't pull off cargo shorts. In his defense I am sure he needs the extra pockets for the wads of cash he is betting.

There are some dressy looking cargo short type pants that look quite decent if you ask me.

Ask anyone who ‘imposes’ a dress code why they do it and they will inevitably say “to uphold standards” then ask “whose standards” and the reply is **my** standards or sometimes standards of people like me. No one ever wants to set standards to meet the generation below or even before them (generally too onerous, see photos of golf in the first half of the last century, played in collar and tie and jackets).

I was a teenager in the 90s, of course I've seen and owned cargo shorts. I still have some that I wear. They're comfortable (mine are fishing shorts, so extremely light weight breathable materials), and functional. I dont think they're hideous, hence my statement.

 

I also have a pair of Ralph Lauren golf shorts with pockets on both legs, and a pair of Champion C9 golf shorts with pockets on the legs. The pockets dont bulge like traditional cargo shorts, but they are there, and they are golf shorts.

I should have known better, but me and a friend went out to a Muni course today on Sunday. Was that a mistake. We played through one 5some that had a mixture of guys and gals, and passed by two other 5somes of similar makeup. I think we got in about 15 holes after we played through one 5 some and jumped around the other two. They were hitting it 30 feet looking for the ball 10 minutes wearing cut-off jeans and cargo shorts. I don't mind the attire, but I do mind the slow play, but they seem to go hand-in-hand from my experience. I'll never go back to that cow pasture.

Close, they were wearing t-shirts. It was just a poor showing of humanity.

I don’t mind them anymore. It’s summer in San Diego and the 5 some crowd is getting more and more popular. As long as they fill their divots and fix their pitches and keep moving, no qualms. I refuse to play in one though.

Cargo shorts are OK in the right situation, but are inappropriate in others. At Muni cow pastures ok, but any upscale courses they look out of place. I usually see cargos on high hc golfers drinking beer.
