Random Bandon Thread

Keep in mind that Bandon Town is a sleepy little coast village of about 3000 residents.  Things shut down there around 6 or 7, especially in the winter months.  There's a Domino's and maybe another pizza joint that delivers, but you'll be better off getting takeout from one of the resort eateries.  They've been doing the takeout thing for a while now, so they have it down.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

Assuming the course stays open, we will there for 3 nights and 3 rounds under the "Freeze" mandated. My question is to those who may have been there, how was the to go food service? We aren't a picky group. Just hoping to grab simple McKees food and take back to room.

Also, is anyone aware of any restaurants that deliver from the town of Bandon? Thinking those restaurants could really use the support. However we may need delivery as our group tends to be a bit too festive to drive by dinner time.

When we were there in March, at the very beginning of shutdown, they switched to takeout only literally overnight, and it worked fine.  Food was the same as if sitting in the dining area, just in to go containers.  Gotta plan ahead a bit more if you want impulse things like extra drinks or something, but if you just want the simple meal in the room it was fine.

We did take out a lot last month and I thought it was great. Honestly at the end of a 36 hole day (4 days in a row) the last thing I wanted to do was spend a bunch of time waiting for a table and then waiting for table service anyway, so the to-go setup worked great. They had their act together and the food was still hot even after walking back to the Inn. And at least as of a month ago - one of them would deliver to your room, I think it was McKees.

Also not really sure what is even open in town right now that would deliver. We went out at 8p or so one night and had to go to the Food Mart just to find beer.

You must have received this then? If you can't make it to dinner without being over the limit - this will be it. And it'll be fine to get you fed and keep you fueled up. The food is nothing spectacular, so coming in a cardboard box won't take the shine off it 😉

With bi-nightly cleaning though, you may need take all the empty boxes back downstairs afterwards.

Definitely wouldn't say the food is nothing spectacular though. I thought the menu at Trails was excellent and the food at Pacific and McKees was also really good.

100% agree. The food is great at every restaurant, but Trails is a step above the rest.

What is Oregon doing about out of state arrivals? I’m in NJ and there’s a 2 week quarantine from just about every other state. I assume Bandon would have to offer refunds or credits in that case, right? Unless they could get an exemption from the state for their guests?

Anyone arriving in Oregon on non-essential travel is required to quarantine for 14 days. This isn't being generally enforced, but that is the expectation.

There go any fantasies for a quick sneak away.

I get that they need to keep revenue rolling but it would be a bad look for Bandon to look the other way when hundreds of guests are arriving from out of state.

Not sure if it helps at all, but they offered me a full refund back in September, just 3 days before I was supposed to arrive on property. Granted part of that was because of the wildfires, but I would assume they are offering the same for travelers that are considering cancelling because of covid.

Pulled this from the website:

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort will waive all cancellation fees for room and tee time reservations, including group reservations, with arrival before December 31, 2020, provided the resort is notified at least seven (7) days prior to arrival.

It currently is just a suggestion to isolate for two weeks I believe. My wife and I have been really safe the past 8 months with all of this and are really on the fence about our trip in December. We haven't eaten at restaurants or anything like that so going from nothing to jumping on a plane and traveling across the country is quite the leap. It feels irresponsible, but we haven't canceled yet. We will see I guess. If we do end up going it will be bookended by isolation period. I am "ok" with getting sick, I don't want to give it to others though, that is for sure. It seems if you want there isn't really much stopping someone though, just suggestions..

Our group got whittled down - first cause of the US/Canada border and then like you others needing to come cross country - to it only being me left, who can drive up. Like you I've spent the past year being Johnny NoMates and take all this seriously and I pulled the plug on this coming Thanksgiving on the weekend. I was super fortunate to find 2 nights in mid-March, on the assumption we're in a better place then, to make up for this year.

I'm bad at names, but remember avatars (was #9/10 at PB?), so I think I've got the right person - but I think you and the missus get a fair bit of traveling and golf in and are pretty mobile and able in that regard - so really it's not like you'll never have the chance to go again if you do bail on December.

Also this is supposed to be a La Nina winter, which typically means the PNW is going to be wet, wet... and more wet, so if you were to give it a miss, you could even be saving a lot of golfing aggravation 😉

I guess I could have said simple or something else instead. Don't mean it's bad, just that if you get a burger, fish/cottage pie, pork chop or something like that, you're not really losing out much having to eat it out of a togo box on the desk in your room vs having a proper sit down meal, so that's really a positive 😉

And I always look forward to my annual pork chop at McKees.

All good points! We canceled traveling to see my family for Thanksgiving, not sure how they will feel if we go to Bandon a few weeks after 😂.  And yes, good memory, previous avatar was our trip to Pebble Beach.

In the spirit of random, the music when on hold with reservations is DMK touring Bandon right before the US am final and discussing hole and pin set ups. Better than elevator music.

Did you know that the players using irons off #1 did better than those with drivers? 😉

I must have called - some number - of times the past month, so I really know that first hole, lol.

For those that want the on-hold experience without the phonecall. As it's meant to be cut up to fit into a call waiting system be prepared to hear "120th US Amateur..." a few more times than you'd think necessary 😉

Yeah I gotta listen to the whole thing rather than the first 4 holes as I’ve done twice this morning.

Lord I must be a pansy; BT & PD are between 5 iron & hybrid, BD depends on wind and OM is driver (because I can literally go ANYWHERE and still be a wedge in.

If they were my regular Sat morning round, then 21H or 3I* on the non-OM ones - but it's holiday golf so almost always driver on all 4 🙂

The amount of smothery, chunky wedges I've hit out of the drain in front of 1 on Bandon I do tell myself leave it up top and have a full club... ah well, who needs to learn stuff.

*Of course always the wind caveat

I generally go with a 2H or 3W on the non-OM first tees.  The one time I got bold and hit driver off BD #1 I hit a power-fade and discovered there's a bunker at the end of the parking lot by the Massage Center.

Never knew that one was even there...

That's actually a neat bad shot. You could have kept going up to the alternate #2 tee 🙂
