Aftermarket adapters warning

Cpr3584

Recommended Posts

Just a warning when buying shafts on the secondary market or ebay, etc. Make sure you get one with the REAL adapter. I had an aftermarket adapter on my driver and could not figure out why the driver was making strange creaking sounds. I pulled it out and its bent slightly. Not sure if it impacted the performance of the club but I have not been driving it well recently. Got the real deal Taylormade TP adapter and i could tell right away its a much more stable adapter. just a heads up.

better yet, only buy these things from a well known retailer. ebay is getting way to sketch these days. so much counterfeit stuff.

If a seller offers to install an adapter for you for free, ask if they can just send you the adapter with the shaft instead. A seller did an awful job with the tip prep on a shaft (they only sanded about 1/2" of the shaft) for my M3, and the shaft actually turned 90* during a round of golf. Fortunately I got it pulled, and was able to prep it properly before reinstalling it myself.

I'm aware that it's an install problem, but I'm just throwing that out there because some sellers offer installation of whatever adapter you want for free. They could be using knock-off adapters as well...the seller I had used a real adapter.

Like the man said, it's an install problem. IMO, the quality of knock-off adapters is of the same quality as the OEM (but honestly, can you really tell the difference?) Hate the installer, not the parts.

I've never had an adapter issue and i've used every driver under the sun. Sounds like user or installer issue.

Yup, me too.

As long as you prep the INSIDE of the adapter, as well as the shaft... I've never had one fail. And I'm a serious HO.

" Bent slightly " ??......the off center axis from the shafts center line , is what allows for

adjustability. The ability to change the face angle open or closed (loft) or lie angle +or -,

upright or flat , is all related to orientation of the " bend" when installed in the hosel....

As for the creaking sound....usually a loosen , give it a quick shot of WD-40 , and re-torque

will solve the issue . Rarely ( one case) was pulling the tip and new ferrule , reglue needed.

It's not an install issue - but it's also nothing unique to aftermarket TM adapters. "Real" TM adapters commonly have the same problem. It has to do with the unique design of the TM ferrule. Most ferrules fit fairly tightly onto the shaft and just butt up against the hosel. But the TM adapter ferrule has a fairly loose connection with both the shaft and the adapter so can frequently be loose enough to rub and creak during the swing depending on how well it is glued to the adapter. The only way to guarrentee no creaking is to get and use an all metal variant - or maybe one of the variants with the smaller ring ferrule that look more like these:

I bought a cheap Chinese knockoff MyFly8 adapter for a Cobra F6 and it ended up ruining my driver shaft. Although I'm a pretty experienced home club builder, it was my first experience with an adjustable driver. The Chinese adapter lacked any type of countersink at the top of the all aluminum adapter, which seemed pretty fishy to me, but I went ahead and glued it up anyway. A few rounds later, the awesome power of my mid 90's swing had the shaft splintering badly at the top of the adapter. That bugged me, but I just chalked it up to overheating the shaft when I pulled it from the old driver. When I later pulled a real Cobra adapter from another shaft, I found a recess countersunk into the top of that adapter fitted with a small plastic ring for cushioning the shaft. I felt a bit better knowing I didn't ruin the shaft during the pull, but I was pissed about the crappy adapter I bought to "save money," lol. Buyer beware...
