Dallas/Ft Worth Area Courses

Just back from our annual couples group outing playing 3 days at Squaw Valley over in Glen Rose. Obviously great weather for early November. Both courses are always so fun to play with some really good golf holes and both were in good shape, especially the greens.

If you get the chance, I highly recommend it. Weekend rates are only $60 and weekdays are $50. But best of all, senior rates are under $40!

Just heard what the going rate is now for Canyon Creek after completing their renovation.

Initiiation $30,000 (and jumping to $35,000 by the end of the year).

Monthly Dues $900+

Unreal. It’s been a while since I’ve played there (and obviously pre reno) but I don’t remember that course being anything remarkable.

Typical ClubCorp, they will just funnel that money away from the club into the clubs their executives play at. That's their whole business model. On our side of things that's awesome if you work for the "chosen" clubs, and a death sentence for the clubs they scalp from.

Played Waterchase today and the greens are the best I've seen in DFW this year.  Fast and true.  Bunkers are still a major issue but rest of the course is in good shape.

I grew up in that area and there's no way they are getting that. Played it last week and it's nice but to be honest the reno just got it to where it should of been from the start, they didn't turn it into a gleneagles/stonebriar quality course.

That neighborhood even with the recent teardowns is still mostly in the lower portion of upper middle class + overall spending is down so this isn't the demographic to drop that amount of money.

If anything the unrealistic initiation fee might just be a tool to keep membership numbers about the same maybe even down a little. Basically just use it at a tool to stabilize numbers.

Extremely small practice facility, not really any memorable holes, tons of houses on the course. It's mostly known for the social programs and Tennis. The golf really struggled post 2010, a lot of members I knew there would play prestonwood or brookhaven instead and they was even a period around 2014/2015 where they actually sold rounds of golf on groupon.

Played Rockwood with @callawayjay.  Course is in FANTASTIC shape. Pace of play was amazing as well. Its just a fun layout.

Canyon Creek is pretty much in line with the initiation at many of their other mid tier clubs now. Unfortunately, dues are UP everywhere. If you think it is insane (I do), just wait until the economy bottoms out. Dues will roll back to pre-covid amounts ($5-15K) and monthly will come down as well.

Fortunately and unfortunately, it is corporate owned which means it will always mirror the economy. If you want stability in initiation and monthly dues then you have to go equity where votes matter.

First time playing Rangers. What a real treat. Wonderful layout, beautiful holes. Greens were slow-ish but true…. In better shape than Texas Star greens, that’s for sure.

Has Twin Creeks gotten their course back in shape?

Reason I ask is that Avid Golfer has just come out with their rankings for public courses. They have Twin Creeks ranked 15th in the DFW East course rankings. Meanwhile Pecan Hollow didn't make the Top 15.

Note: For those who don't know, they divide the DFW area into East and West.

Any reason why I call Hawks Creek to ask about a tee time for a single, and they tell me no availability until after 2; even when their website shows tee times for a twosome at noon?

Getting really tired of their website showing no tee times, but then when I go on base seeing twosomes and threesomes out on the course. It blows my mind that they would rather hold a time for a possible group, and just pass up revenue then to let a single go out with a group.

I played Twin Creeks a week ago for the first time since Spring. Overall condition: meh.

Fairways not bad. Bunkers fairly nice. Greens firm and bare/patchy. The temporary greens are gone but the renovated greens are underwhelming.

Still a fun course but they just don’t seem to have the resources or desire to make it truly nice.

Hearing that Denton Country Club had a huge increase in monthly dues. If what I hear is true it may be as much as a 50% increase. Yes, 50%.

Interesting. That’s an equity club if I’m not mistaken. I wonder if that will push anyone to sell their membership? I know a guy who joined for $10k. I think he said it was worth $50k now. This was a couple of years ago.

I lived right next door for 2 years back in 2019. Played there regularly because it was in decent shape and could get a hot deal on it. Played there once at the end of 22 and it had gone to complete garbage. I probably won’t ever go back. It’s a shame because I liked the set up they had

they must not have been out to Pecan Hollow. I have never seen it out of shape. Can’t beat it for the price! I was at twin creeks earlier this summer and was charged $94. Get out in the course and every green is nothing but dirt. Will never go back. Pecan Hollow will always trump Twin Creek

Yea, I'm thinking I read on here that Twin Creeks had temporary greens for part of this year.

It that's the case, I'm guessing there's something else at play here that got Twin Creeks that ranking.

I think I may have played right before the temp greens went in. I sent a review in about the poor conditions and cost and all I got back was I hope you give us another chance. Not going to happen. I feel some insider cooking on the rankings lol

@gs1184 and I made the trek to Sugar Tree. Such a great place and truly a shotmakers course

first time there since they turned 4 into a par 5 thereby making it a par 37 on the front. Back to back par 5s then finish with another on 9.

greens lightning fast.

Man, I just looked at the scorecard. Men's white tees at 5988 with a 70.4 course rating and 131 slope. Wow!

It’s a punishing course if you’re offline. Elevated and undulated greens. From the blues the par 3s were 180, 165(downhill), 185, 185. @gs1184 played the tips and we had a nice duel on 12. He hit 3 iron from 210 and I hit 7 wood from 185.
