If the only things that changed were the outer, more cosmetic changes then I'd agree with you. However, the internal changes, namely the repositioning of the tungsten and the change to the inverted cone on the back of the face, will affect how the club sounds/feels. No surprise the club feels different than the prior generation.

The cone was there before too.

I hit 20 balls with the new 790 7 iron and 20 shots with the old 790 iron both shafted with the PX LZ 6.5 and same loft and lie. I can not tell any difference between them. No difference in sound, feel, look at address. Hit both very well . They say the new one is smaller but it’s so minor you can not tell at address

Yep, for sure. But they changed the geometry of the cone a little and moved the location more towards the toe, something that hadn't been done previously. Along with a thinner face, which I forgot to mention, it's definitely going to affect feel off the face.

Did acknowledge TM's thinner face and more tungsten composition. I note that the offset difference is really small: --1-2 mm and only in the 4-6i. From 7 on offset is the same between the 17 and 19 version. (I don't know if I would be able to discern this, particularly as I go down to the 5i only.)

> > > > Shiels view: they kept a good thing good. A 24% price increase is material.

> > >

> > > A couple of things from Rick's video. First, the club length spec is not the sneaky little change as he makes it out to be. TaylorMade changed how they measure clubs in late 2018, well after the P790 was initially released. TM now uses the USGA 60 degree ruler as opposed to their old method that almost no one else was using. This change meant that, on paper, the measured length of clubs went up by a small amount ( about 1/8") because of the different way of measuring. They then rounded up to the next quarter of an inch so that their specs weren't on eighths of an inch intervals. So the 6 iron spec changed from 37.25" on the old ruler to 37.5" on the new ruler (different method plus 1/8"). Had Rick measured the 2017 and 2019 clubs side-by-side on the same ruler, he'd have seen that there is only a 1/8" difference between the two. No one is gaining ball speed with 1/8" of extra length.

> > >

> > > I don't see a 24% price increase, from a US perspective at least. The 2017 P790 released at $1299 and the 2019 model is $1399. That's a $100 increase, or 7.7%.

> > >

> > > Finally, the thinner face is for more ball speed but not out of the center. It's combined with a change to the inverted cone behind the face to preserve ball speed on off-center hits and make heel and toe hits play more similar.

> >

> > Excellent points. And to me at least, they point toward the 19 version being more similar to the 17 version than different. I don't think that's a bad thing, BTW, and if they come out on top in my own testing, I will purchase the 19s.

>

> 100% agree. A nice refinement and smoothing off of a few rough edges. TaylorMade knows the P790 was a hit and they weren't going to rock the boat. And for the average person, a set of irons is a **4-5 year** purchase. They aren't trying to win anyone over who's already playing P790.

4-5 sets per year? Yeah, that seems about right for me. :)

Mine just shipped today... excited to get them out for a test run on Friday. The P7TW's are on the bench for the moment. The new UDI and wedges shipped too!

jll62 hit the nail on the head. The current 790 gaming golfers aren’t the target at all. There will be some who upgrade, but it’s a fresh new look for those currently in the market. Luckily for me, I’m in the market for irons. As I always am...

This is what I’ll be hoping for as well. If they have a little cleaner top line in the mid and long irons that would be great. Gamed the original 790 for a season and just found they go dead straight, were harder to work left and right then a more traditional cb which is pretty obvious, but found I really couldn’t bring the flight down, always wanted to go one trajectory, high and low spin, great if you want to hit it really far lol. Currently enjoying the 760s, best of both worlds for me.

Will be in the market for a 790 in the 3 iron though, so looking forward to seeing them in hand.

If you sign up for FedEx delivery notification TM uses them to ship and you can find out that way.

Totally worth signing up with Fed Ex for this service IMO. Great advice.

They beat the date they said for mine... and they usually do. I was quoted 9/1 as the earliest ship date when I placed my order. They will arrive tomorrow.

I hit this at a TM fitting yesterday. Never hit prior generation. These are pretty unreal and I get why there are so many people that are all-in on these. Fitter said they launch about 1.5 degrees higher, typically. Amazing, these launched LOWER than the 760 during the fitting and lower than my AP2 with KBS Tour V 125 which are pretty beefy.

I'm not sure that I'll pull the trigger with golf season coming coming to an end in MN (and new gear coming in January.... but, these are really impressive irons (as were the old ones, I understand).

Where did you do your fitting? I'm not really in the target market for these, but I'm very intrigued and want to give them a solid look.

TPC Twin Cities...the TM rep came by to do fittings and show the new wedges, etc. I will say, I was a bit disappointed in the shaft options in the cart. The only X flex shafts were the LZ (don't like it), C Taper 130 (too stout) and the DG 120 X100 (which I actually really liked and had never so much as touched).

The fitting was very good otherwise. I don't like getting fit for irons inside as I just don't swing the same when my body is bracing for impact against a mat. The 790 head was outstanding. Painfully straight, little curve (both good and bad I suppose) and plenty long. I actually didn't hit the 760 either. I don't know if I'll pull the trigger because we are on the cusp of "new gear" season...but, I could absolutely game these irons. Really good.

Sorry, that was a long answer! Fitting was a TPC Twin Cities.
