Everyone who plays music swears that it cant be heard except very close to the cart, and is always turned down when near others.

But there are a lot of folks , from all over the country who comment on the loud music. The courses wont deal with the rudeness, due to money, and the ones who dont like it dont say anything because they wont let someone else's ill manners ruin their day.

Sounds like a problem brewing down the road.

Absolutely true. I’m just south of you and it’s same. The idea that they are in tune with anything is nuts. I mean we’ve don’t the math on how much they give away to golf now and we ( the clubs committee on promotion ) still can’t convince the owner that golf now is simply a middle man who’s taking their profits. It’s the same regulars playing the course ( semi private with a lot of public play ) each time a discount is offered. Those same people would play the course for the same price everyday if you offered it. And guess what. You could keep the whole greens fee. Not give Half to golf now. So yes. In touch they are not.

I think a lot has to do with interpretation, what me and you consider loud can be very different. Also I think very simple common sense etiquette can solve most of the issues.

Everyone in your group must be ok with music, one person says no thank you, you shut it off, no excuses or whining. If you do not want music say no thank you, don't give some rant about the tradition of the game, you look like a clown answering a yes or no question that way.If you are driving/walking near another group to play a ball turn it downIf your group hears music from another group for 10 seconds when they're driving/walking by it's really not a big deal.

Exactly. I mean. I don’t ask if someone wants any appetizers on the first tee either. Why ? We aren’t at a restaurant and I’m not a waiter.

I listen to music when I play if my partners are ok with it (never done it when paired up at the starter.) However the volume is always kept low (often times so low that I can only hear it when I'm in the car near my phone) and I always turn it completely off when within ear shot of someone else or when on the green or tee box (since I assume there is usually someone at the next green or tee that can hear.) If someone said that it was bothering them (nicely) I would happily turn it off.

Right. But the only time it’s attracting people is if it’s a hot deal for a local course. Might be different for resorts. I can see it’s value as a booking agent for out of town folks. But for locals it’s just a coupon service. And I simply think that the loca course cold just start it’s own coupon or frequent flier deal and advertise direct. And not have to pay the middle man.

Even on this small fee. Do the math for a years worth of golf now times. It adds up. Especially when you never saw a jump in rounds per year when you started using golf now. I’ve ran the numbers at our club. And still can’t convince the GM to drop them. It’s just local regulars using it for hot deals. Guys that would play anyway.

True, however I think many people have become used to a one shop stop. At the very least for comparisons of prices. If there are 5 courses a group might interested in playing going to that site is much simpler than going through 5 different course portals. sites like GN, supreme golf, etc understand this human behavior and capitalize on it.

Oh I agree. It was good if you were looking for a round and weren't tied to any one course, so you could see the tee times for multiple courses in an area in one site. But otherwise most all courses now have online reservation systems so there is no need to go through GolfNow. Plus I always walk and some courses would tell me that because I booked through GolfNow they had to charge me for a cart. Which is utter nonsense but it wasn't worth the trouble anymore.

A comment that is been made several times to a comment like yours is that people are uncomfortable being the one in the foursome to ask that the music be turned off, so they don't say anything. Now what we have is a polite person in a foursome who doesn't like music having to endure listening to your choice of music and being uncomfortable.

When the wife and I are paired with someone, I always ask if they are ok with some music. The answer, to date, has always been an enthusiastic “absolutely”. Not once has anyone been reluctant or expressed disinterest in music, and if they did, we would act accordingly.

if they don’t have the confidence to say “no, I’d rather not”, that is on them, not me.

dont know man.

My I first saw this post last night , and decided to think on it.

The last line is the puzzler for me. And here’s why. I compare it to smoking when in close proximity to others. It should be assumed to be NOT ok in my opinion. Only when it’s discovered that there’s 100 % consensus should it be done and that consensus shouldn’t be forced onto others to figure out . Here’s why .

I have a ton of experience with smokers. And myself having never tried a cigarette , I loathe it. My brothers , parents , and at one time half my employees smoked. So every day of my life was around smokers. Here’s how it goes when you try to stop them. “ hey man please don’t smoke in here , I don’t want that smell on me the rest of the day “. Response - side eye look and a “ ok “ and then silence for an hour or two. That’s the mildest version. If it’s one of my brothers it goes like this “ hey what the hell man , put that crap out “ “ oh I forgot you’re too good to be around me ... might get a little smell on you and get you in trouble with the wife”. ( I spared you the cuss words that are automatic from them ). To which I will replay in kind and so on and so forth.

Point - if the persons introducing the obviously foreign behavior for the situation would simply abide by socially responsible etiquette and not introduce a foreign behavior into a mixed company setting , then all that tension can be avoided.

The short version is , the round is likely to be ruined if somebody wants to smoke or play tunes on top of me. Why ? When they ask I’ll probably be polite and keep my opinion to myself , but the mood will be set , And then there we will be. Not wanting to share each other’s company.

Kind of like going to church and asking “ hey people is my YouTube too loud “? As you watch on your phone. The answer isn’t going to be pleasant. What I’m saying is , if the people in the cart beside you on the tee don’t have their own tunes. I don’t think you should ask and force them to lie and say it’s ok. The only other option is to tell the truth and have the awkward silence for the whole round. I’m the type that would probably tell you “ sure. Whatever “ and try to live through it. But at some point I might just decide to go home without explanation too. Why ? I tend to have an on or off switch. No real in between. And I try to avoid turning the switch on if possible. Most people are this way. I think you’re taking advantage of people’s kindness and mistaking it for weakness.

What I do is this.... You want to play your music. Cool, I'll play mine as well.. I'll drown out country, rap, bad rock by countering with say anything from..... the Pistols to Show Tunes. Dueling Genre's you might say.

No shortage of jacknobs out there seem to think everyone else enthusiastically shares their musical taste.
