Would you game a putter you didn’t like the look of?

I’m currently gaming 10 putters, and the ugliest is probably the Bettinardi Studio Stock #38, just a bit plain and unsymmetrical, the prettiest is the Piretti Forza. But no, any uglier and I don’t want to take it out on course. I could never game a Spider as I think they’re hideous - I did have a go in the local store but found I was pulling my face whilst putting with it. The Cleveland HB #10 isn’t exactly a beauty either especially with a plumber’s neck, but I really, really like the feel of it, I’d even go so far as to say it’s the best feeling of all of mine despite being several times cheaper than many. That’s probably my limit on ugliness though.

Strangely though, if I was playing for money rather than fun I’d take the Cleveland. It’s the only one that doesn’t have the sightline in the middle, it appears to be opposite the COG position on the face, rather than centred.

> Why are results all that should matter? I'm not on tour. I'm not playing for sponsors. I play golf for a number of reasons, and results aren't even close to being the end all be all. I play because I really enjoy the game. That enjoyment includes the results, but also my love for the equiment, the aesthetics, the nature, the camaraderie... etc.

>

> So to answer the question in the OP, it's really on a sliding scale. I could game a putter that isn't my preferred shape if the results were there. I currently am! But I couldn't game a putter that made me wretch, even if the results were superb, because that would negatively impact my enjoyment of the game. In other words, no, I'm not using a Directed Force putter anytime soon.

Most folks enjoying doing things well. Playing golf well usually requires that your equipment fits you such that it allows you to get the best performance. If playing golf as well as you can is not your concern then play whatever is pretty.

Currently gaming a Scotty Newport Detour 2.5. A buddy of mine made me an unbelievable trade that I couldn't say no to. At first the alignment aid was ugly to me. Well let me tell you, I've never made so many 30 footers in my life. Putter just fits my stroke and it will never leave the bag....not permanently anyway lol. And now I love the look of the thing.

"Game" is just a term used on WRX for as you say playing a club or using a club. I have fell into the habit of using that terminology myself. Note: I see you have some nice classic stuff in your signature you need to come on over to the Classic Golf and Golfers section of WRX. Also see evidently you lost some classic stuff in a fire my condolences on that

Probably not, but by the same token, I won't play a putter that I like the look off but can't putt with. I learnt my lesson with a Ping BeCu B60. I'd been wanting one of these for years, but when I finally got one I found I couldn't putt with it. Everything went left, and I decided it wasn't worth changing my putting stroke just for the putter. As an aside, it was a great feeling putter.

Now I'm facing the same problem with an original Newport Tei3 that I've found in the local shop in great condition for a decent price. I hit it OK, but I'm more confident with heel-shafted blades and half-mallets than Anser-type putters. Problem with the Tei3 is that I'm not *that* bad with it. I can putt OK with it, but not as well as with a bog-standard Odyssey #9.

How a club looked to me use to be my first criteria in choosing a club. Not any more after I gamed a Directed Force putter.

I guess other clubs, like fairway woods, are consistent in the way they look. But what if there was a real ugly driver that was 40 yards longer and straighter than your present driver. Would you use it? Or would looks matter in this case?

I USED TO say "no" and "HILL NO ". Can't putt with that ugly thing that doesn't look right to me........

After all these time in this silly game, I would use anything that will improve( get back) my better score in golf. Changed my opinion with the time. Same as other issues in life which the personal opinion will change with the time.

To remedy this change in life, I gathered at least one of each of the major style of the putter. Different design in heads, shafts and balance. I'll play whichever feels right on the day of golfing.

I have been gaming a SC Newport 2.6 center-shaft for two years. Went back to my old Rife 2 bar hybrid blade today. It’s not as pretty, but I had my best round of the season today. Also been known to putt with a bullseye. The Newport is the prettiest, but I think it’s going to spend some time in the garage.
