Oak Brook Illinois in October

Recommended Posts

The long range forecast for mid-October looks pretty good at this point. Highs projected to be near 60 degrees, with morning lows in the mid-40's. From the 13th through the 26th there are only four days with rain.

It was in the 80's here the past few days. The remainder of September looks beautiful with highs ranging from 65 to 82.

You can generally get out and golf 10 months a year here, there's always a good 50+ degree day or two even in the winter months. The bigger issue is traveling here, you don't know what you're getting day to day.

Are we really defending Chicago winters lol? It is awful here from November-April. The weather difference between here and somewhere close like Indy or St Louis is pretty large. Just about every "decent" course in Chicago closes for a few months as well. There were 7 days over 45 degrees between Dec-Feb. Those days were unplayable for the most part because of snow cover.

LOL that's what I was trying to get at but apparently you can play golf 10 months out of the year in Chicago (I wish I would have known when I lived there). I suppose you could play anywhere at anytime but when I play I don't want freezing temps, soggy ground, and shitty grass. And yes, even if it does happen to reach 50 in Feb, you know damn well it feels like 30 if you are playing anywhere near the Lake. I know, I lived no more than a mile from the lake my entire 15 years up there.

And yes Harborside was my go-to since it was so close to the city, really nice, and a friend works there so I would get a discount. They straight up closed from Nov-March'ish so even if it did get warm one day, you couldnt play it.

I'm not arguing that STL is Hawaii but the weather is a hell of a lot better than Chicago. I'll follow up on this thread in 2-months when its snowing up there and its still 50/60 down here.

I don't think we are defending Chicago winters. We know they stink and we don't need someone coming in here to tell us that. I simply see someone coming in here from another Midwest state exaggerating something that does not need to be exaggerated. Should we talk about our high taxes and crime rate as well. I'm glad this guy moved to Saint Louis and is happy. I would not move there if it is was a tropical paradise, but that's just one guys opinion.

Nothing wrong with Willow Crest considering you'll be right there; you can stumble back to your room depending how the round goes! Cantigny and Village Links are both great options as well. I'm a fan of Seven Bridges in Woodridge too. If the weather is nice that weekend, I'll definitely be getting out at Village Links or Seven Bridges.

UPDATE:

So it looks like I may be able to get on to 2 private clubs. Edgewood Valley and Glen Oak.

I’m guessing it’s an arm and a leg to play.

I’m leaning towards Willow Crest, but I’m waiting to see any fall rates. Mistwoos looks awesome.

Has anyone been to Edgewood Valley and/or Glen Oak?

Yep! I ride my bike to the train station and always admire it. Although I get on the Prairie Path after the course.

I have played Edgewood Valley quite a few times. It is a perfectly fine private course with a very social membership. The course itself offers interesting holes and something more than the typical Chicago-area tree-lined parkland style country club courses. It has modest elevation changes (again, it is all relative) on some holes and the greens are generally firm and smooth. Is this a destination course? No. But, it is a solid track that you will enjoy playing once or twice.

Hinsdale is a fine club. I don't get the hate that I see. Sure, it has the reputation of being exclusive, local and, for some, snooty. But, again, it is an old school parkland style golf course that is enjoyable to play. For those who haven't been out there in recent years, the membership has gotten younger and, dare I say, progressive (allowing Golfboards, bluetooth music players, etc.). Every member I have met is friendly, outgoing and successful. Another nice private club in the area that doesn't seek attention is Ruth Lake CC in Hinsdale. It is a fun private track in pristine condition.

As others have said, Cantigny is a very good public option. One name I didn't see in this thead is the Glen Club in Glenview, which is about 20 minutes away from Oak Brook via I-294. Many bash the Glen Club here because it is expensive for what it is (probably about $120 + cart fee in October, but over $200 at peak times in the summer). But, it runs like a private golf club with a membership, but, sitting on publicly-owned land, is open to daily fee players. It is a very well-designed and fun-to-play Tom Fazio track. It has hosted Web.com/KF Tour events, is the home of the IL PGA Hall of Fame and also hosts the finals of the IL PGA Open. A very fun track IMO. It also drains very well compared to a lot of old private and public courses. I have had rounds cancelled at some of the bigger name courses in the area, but this course seems to be open - albeit on a cart path only basis.

Enjoy your round.

It's October 1st, and the high today will be 83. Crazy stuff. The projected highs for the week of the 14th and 21st will be in the 60's with little chance for rain.

If you really want to go for the top end of the private clubs, why don't you look into Rich Harvest, Chicago GC, Butler Nat'l, Shoreacres, Olympia Fields, Conway Farms and Skokie GC? They will all add an extra 30-40 minutes to your drive from the western suburbs. But, they are some of the best clubs that this area can offer. Now that it is a low season, you may even get a chance to get on those courses.

You won't know unless you ask.

I messaged Butler National and that was a no go. I have an event that evening so the extra time away would not work. Thank you though!

Thank you Argonne! Hopefully the course will not be that wet.

You coming in next week, or the week after? We're getting rain at the moment, and the temps will drop into the 40's this weekend. However, next week looks rain free, and the temps should rise into the mid-60's by the weekend. Things should dry out nicely.

Another good thing is that if you are indeed playing glen oak, that is in the central area that has seen relatively less rain than the north and south

UPDATE!!

What a georgous day and a georgous golf

Course.

Last year I played Rolling Green in Arlington Heights and I wasn’t the biggest fan. Glen Oak blew it out of the water.

The greens were firm and fast. 87. Not a great round but the members were awesome and I loved the course.

Talking to my caddy, it sounds like it’s the best course in the area. I told him I’m by butterfield and he said it’s jus ok. He told me Lagrange front 9 ends with 2 par 3s. That sucks.

I have to experience the public tracks one day.

I suppose it depends how you define "area", but Chicago Golf Club is only about 4-5 miles away.
