Just never been the shirtless barefoot guy. And I’ll work and play golf in long pants more than most. But still plenty of shorts too. It’s my ears , face and arms that take the beating. Got to get on it.

This is me, except I do go shirtless from time to time (swimming and floating the river). I've have a very naturally dark complexion, I don't burn, and my skin is oily all on it's own. My wife (works in the medical field) says the oily skin is why I still look younger than I am (aside from the grey hair). I cannot stand wearing sunblock, and until I met my current wife, I never did. She gets on me if I don't wear it when I play, and since 99% of my rounds are played with her, I just put it on and suffer through the grease. The tops of my ears are probably darker than any other part of my body, and I'm certain I'll wind up getting at least one of them nipped off like my step dad did (basically looks like a cropped ear on a pit-bull, lol).

I have found that if I put on the sunblock at home and stay inside for a bit before going out, it ends up feeling less greasy. Sometimes I forget, and spray down as I am waiting on the 1st tee. Since I'm already sweating/oily, it just compounds the issue. I had one spot that concerned me several years ago and had it checked out. Turns out it was nothing according to the dermatologist, but for whatever reason he still froze it off. The only part of me that I feel good about putting sunblock on is my ears and my tattoos, but I cover all exposed skin to satisfy the Mrs.

Lol. It’s the alien DNA just in case you didn’t know. It also makes us less appealing to mosquitoes and other biting insects , and we tend to grow hair till age 100.

Like many one here, I was too careless when I was young. I would get so tan I wouldn't burn anymore and so didn't see the need for any protection. I've had a couple of those actinic keratoses removed from my face, but nothing serious yet anyway. From playing a lot of golf in recent years, my forearms get it the worst now. I finally started wearing solar sleeves this year and plan to stick with those going forward for the bulk of every golf season.

What does that picture tell us?

He lubes his glove, plays in cargo shorts and thinks Phil is a good guy. That smile leads me to believe he sells appliances.

I’m not certain if it was Thursday or Friday. But I’m certain I saw him wearing one. It caught my attention and I watched him for 3 holes then went back outside.

The timing of that article weirded me out. I was due to go to my doc and get shorn, but I had to wait two months to be seen because....America. So, on the day of, I took the afternoon from work, drove 90 minutes down the highway, through construction and an accident (which combined held me up another half hour) did some creative traffic dodging, got to the office in enough time for a secretary to say "I'll be with in a minute," which took ten minutes actually....

....all to find out that my doc had moved to an office the next town over. So, after all that I wasn't able to make my appointment. I asked them when they could see me next, and they said "two months." I told them I had a few new spots I was concerned about (which was true), and the receptionist on the other side said...and I kid you not..."Oh, I'm sure they are nothing to worry about."

Don't come to Maine, for it is a silly place.

Melanoma is no joke. As 2x malignant Melanoma survivor I can tell you guys. If your between 15-30 you need to really take your sun exposure seriously. Wear the floppy hat, collars up, long pants, long sleeves and Zinc Oxide sunscreen. I know nobody wants to look like a dork, dweeb, etc. If your into golf, your going to be in the sun alot, the amount of UV radiation your exposed to today is 6-10% greater than us old farts 30-40 years ago. Melanoma rates have been increasing 3-5% per year over the last 25 years. (people over 50) What used to be rare has become almost common place. (Est over 250,000 in 2019) Some goofy looking protection now could prevent this in your future...

Thanks for the share, will take your advice and get checked.

I play in the UK, and although the sun is less intense here, it's still enough to cause nasty sunburn on the right day. It amazes me how many fellow golfers don't apply sunscreen. I did the longest day challenge in June out in the sun all day and neither of the other guys bothered at all.

Not a fan of the bucket hats but should really get one, at least for the sunnier outings.

"No thanks, mate. All that nonsense interferes with my lifestyle."

How often i have heard that even from guys, and women, who focus on looking the part of a top-flight golfer, surfer, biker, etc. I go out into the tropical sun looking like a dork, very unconcerned with the opinion of others regarding my anti-sun costume. Sure, i get nasty comments, and laughs, but can't be arsed.

When I was a kid, about 14, I spent an entire sunny 4th of July outside shooting fireworks in a tank top with no sunscreen. I burned so bad that it blistered and turned crunchy, then it peeled leaving behind a wet layer underneath, then that dried out and it peeled again. It left behind dozens of irregular shaped light brown spots on my upper back and shoulders, some about dime sized. I never did have them checked out. A few years back I took some of that freeze spray for warts and zapped the ones I could reach. They peeled off and are pretty much non-existent now. I hope there's not damage lurking down below that could cause future problems, but cosmetically they're gone.

I never used to use any sunscreen, young or in to my early 20s, regularly got a dark tan and thought nothing of it. I got checked at the behest of my mother, given she had some various things taken off or frozen off and found out the top of my right ear needed to get a little nip. I have found that the "sport" stuff tends to feel less greasy, which I very much enjoy, and I don't mind putting that on every hour or so anymore. I have been lucky to have gone back to once a year check ups now, and things are going well, but with the history that I have and my family has, I am never too careful.

This is something I’ve worried about silently for maybe 5-6 years. Ever since I started playing golf. I walk a lot of rounds so not covered at all. I never burn which allows this behavior I suppose. I literally just get browner. I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing ? ... but in all seriousness I’m going to get an appointment called in tomorrow and get checked out. And then have some hats made I guess. lol.

always wear long pants to play golf and get a lot of stick from my league players. Now i have more reason to always wear long pants. Crocodile Dundee hat next

Just back from a golfing week in Turkey and suntan lotion was my best friend. For someone from the north of Scotland, the 35 Celsius heat was more than too hot and without covering myself I would have looked like a lobster by the time that I was done. Honestly do not understand people who go without it.
