The simplest explanation is that "adequate" and "strong enough" refer to either age and gender appropriate standards, and/or matches between the strength and speed of different parts of the body. Gaps between different parts represent missed potential for distance and direction, but more importantly a risk for injury. I think, for instance, most PT's who work in this area would tell you that lower back pain, especially among older golfers, is much more often strain on the back from weak and/or slow hips than from anything mechanically wrong with the back. The golf swing should involve rotation from the thoracic spine, but if the hips are weak and/or slow, the lumbar spine has to pick up the rotational slack to keep up with the upper body. The lumbar spine isn't meant for that sort of work, which gives you a club about what "adequate" and "strong enough" mean.

I kind of assume the same thing... never met any low single digit or any true single who doesn’t average at least 230-240?

Unless they just can’t hit driver well? Maybe they spin 6000rpm with a driver?

No idea about vertical jump...probably a bit more than a foot or two? Lol. I have high bone density, 2-3 times normal. So, heavier than I look, but definitely not fast on my feet.

Swing speed radar at 135 is pretty fast, and is at least 120 true club head speed. You should be carrying well over 270 yards with “okay” contact and fitted clubs.

The swinging 135 part was just a analogy, it didn't happen....LOL , I can carry 260-280 depending on the quality of hit. 280 would be my best and 260 would be a solid avg hit. My swing speed is about 108-112 depending on the day.

lets quit the vertical jump from now on, haha after my third workout, I pulled a hamstring and now my lower back is super tight. I don't think old guys were designed for max leap vertical jumps.

No, we're not LOL! I just did a search for what you discussed and came up with this video.

For the first time he ever hit a golf ball to swinging a club 109 mph, I would say we have the answer here. If he learned to swing over a few months, I would bet he could play pretty well. He's just using his raw athletic coordination.

Impressive.

I'd say you're not too far off the mark with your arguments.

Just wanted to say this is one of the best post I've read in a long time. Nice work!

Also just wanted to throw out that of all the factors that affect speed the one that is most overlooked is mental. Most of the guys I see who are decent golfers but don't generate any speed are so caught up in getting into the right "positions" in their golf swings that they end up using a fraction of the strength, flexibility, and speed that they actually do possess. Give these guys a baseball and tell them to throw it as far as they can and you would be amazed.... the speed IS there, the technique IS there, they just can't get over the fact that you have to unleash the club on the ball like you are throwing it instead of guiding it around.

as dpd5031 said lots of variables. Yes for some strength training will make a difference, for some flexibility for some technique, for some mobility all contribute to possible . As we get old training is great to keep what we got, tough to gain but hopefully stay where your at.

There are definitely lots of variables, but if we want to try and generalize this across a population of golfers, strength training/exercise more often than not, will help you gain speed and therefore distance (you still have to hit the ball squarely). How much you gain, and how much it helps you is almost entirely up to the individual and how bad they want it. I wanted more speed badly but I didn't have the time nor desire to be in the weight room. Doing half of what KB mentioned in that video (wailing on golf balls at the range trying to up my bodies limits) still netted me a very significant amount of speed increase.

I really do think that so many people today that are very low on distance and wish they had more, just aren't able or willing to commit to what it takes to increase it. They want it to just come to them without the work. I worked my butt off to get to where I am today distance wise. It was 1 mph at a time and all the while I had to find the time to work on my putting, chipping and now my swing consistency. Of all the people I have met that have complaints about being a short knocker, I find they aren't willing to put the effort in and take the risk that is ruining your swing for a period of time for fear of embarrassment or because they think it won't help them any. Very often, I run into people that specifically don't want to become "that guy" at the range that wails on drivers and hits it terribly. You need to swallow your pride, not care about what others think, and just do it.

Swing hard in case you hit it!

Having a good balanced fitness regime including strength, cardio, flexibility, balance and diet will certainly help increase your overall golf performance and general health, but core strength and balance are the two components that harness all that strength and power.

You could be a guy that is built like a absolute brick s*** house, but chances are you are not gonna be able to swing a club fast with all that muscle mass or even get good rotation.

Balanced physique is key I think.

The average person that plays golf does not swing fast or hard as they can, not unless they were taught the importance of hitting the ball as hard as you can. I swing hard but not as fast I can. I prefer ball control over extra yards in the junk. Again, strength training can help but if your mechnaics are out of sync added its not creating extra distance.

Next to me, Rickie Fowler is a small guy that hits the ball farther than most guys on tour, yet he's not muscled. Just put down the beer and work on adjusting the timing of your body and swing mechanics, you'll see improvement but it's not happening overnight.
