Nike Slingshot irons... the good?, the bad? Yes they’re ugly lol. Anyone game them? Thoughts.

I’m thinking scoring lower this spring is going to be my focus. Consistent driver but iron play keeps me in the 80s.

Are slingshots as easy to game as the reviews read. Definitely not my ideal irons aesthetically speaking.

Nike slingshots, Callaway Fusion, what else?

Only played the Slingshots once, as a rental. The options were them. If ur a 12, JP expects you will find these clubs a bit of a total overkill.

Yes they are that easy to play. I think they were very under rated performance wise. In some ways they were the stepping stone to "hollow cavity" iron designs. They showed how much launch can be affected by moving some of the weight even further behind the face than that current generation of irons was capable of. If there was such a thing as a "point and shoot" iron the Ping G700s would be the top of my list, and the Callaway XR Steelheads and Nike Slingshots would be 2nd and 3rd on my list. If you really cannot stand the look of the Slingshot, the Steelhead XR can be found used for around $200 or $400 brand new.

I played them years ago as a rental set as well. They played like hybrids imo. Yes, super easy to hit, but ugly.

I had them as a rental once also.

Distance control was a challenge. I remember air mailing a green out of nowhere.

The original were Fantastic game improvement irons. I played them exclusively for several years and then as a backup set. They were finally unseated by g25. I gave them to my buddies son just last summer after I purchased the g410 making g25 a backup set. It was a waste to have them sitting in my garage.

That stated, lots of great options out there. Ping g series, Callaway big Bertha as nearly every OEM will have something that fits the bill.

They were popular at my club for a year or two. High handicappers, Nike was new etc.

 

I remember I have been playing with 2-3 people where that back strap thing flew off during a game.

Slingshots are in fact ugly IMO.

BUT.... they go a mile and a half. I hit my buddies who had some type of S flex dynamic light shaft in them (if memory serves) and these things launch the ball.

touch was a little bit of a problem but if you’re shooting in the 80s and looking to gain a little distance to shorten up the course the Slingshots will do it.

What irons are you playing now? Are you looking at the slingshots due to price? I would say look at the Ping G Series or Mizuno Hot Metals. Both are great sets for game improvement and easy to hit and are reasonably priced.

By far the best and most beautiful clubs, especially the 5i, I have EVER had*. And I have played about everything out there.

*Disclaimer... I hit my only hole in one with my slingshot 5i.

Can't go wrong with the G25s. IMO, they are one of the best models PING ever made. I have a backup set myself. Just fantastic irons that are point and shoot. As forgiving as any G model, but in the best looking package in regards to size/shape.

I would rank the Nike Vapor Speed ahead of the Slingshots and, in terms of feel, ahead of Ping G30 and G. The entire Vapor lineup is solid with the Speed matching up best to the M4. See sets in nice shape for $200. Lots of club sizes/shapes in that line. Others would be the Vapor Fly and the Vapor Fly Pro. All are upgrades over the Slingshots. Look better, feel better, strong distance and no little spor-welded metal strap to fly off.

The first irons I owned. They are shovels. I could recommend an endless number of newer and cheaper alternatives.

Incredible clubs. I dont like to practice much, my index is currently 10.0, always go back to these clubs. Have never hit easier irons. 90% of my best rounds were with these Slingshot irons.
