Age is just a number

First off,,,, I am 74 years old....have been a low handicap for a long time and have shot my age or better numerous times....BUT I did it 2 days in a row this past week on 2 different courses. Both courses are right around 6200 yards (Long enough for old guys) Shot 74 on the longer of the 2 which is a par 71 track and 72 on the shorter track which is par 72.

The 72 was somewhat more memorable because it was even par and was the 150th time I have shot my age or better.....Not so "Passive brag"....just wanted to share with fellow players.

Wow, thats a great accomplishment.

But, age is more then a number or I'd be running 18 minute 5ks, cycling 24 miles in under an hour, and on and on. I worked my a** off training for triathlons for 22 years. At the age of 58 the last 2 or 3 years no longer saw improvements in time. Father time caught me and the times began to fall off. I was no longer competitive for overall podiums. Age has a way of catching you. At 65 yo I no longer train for racing. I golf 3 days a week, walking 18 holes each time. I also cycle 60-80 miles a week. Times and speed aren't what they once were, but I'm still fast enough.

I hope when I get a few years older I'll be able to golf to my age. Well done, sir and here's to many more times!!

I'm 59 and my handicap is trending lower (slowly). My lowest round so far is 70, so I'm starting to think that I may have a chance at shooting my age later in this decade. I played with a 78 year old last year who said he shoots his age "all the time." I could believe it, since he was driving it 260 and straight, hitting most greens, and getting up and down effortlessly on the greens he missed. That gentleman, and the OP, are an inspiration for me to keep working to improve.

I came within 2 strokes 3 years ago when I was 65. After the round I couldn’t wait to show my carpool buddy my card as he normally was a few strokes better than me at the time. He walks up and asks how I did and with a smug look I show him my epic 67. He hands me his card - with a 64! First time he shot his age and he beat it by 2. I just looked at him with a “Really?” look on my face.

Its been a while since I’ve scored low so I’m not sure when or if I’ll shoot my age. One of the older guys in my league (80) stopped keeping track as he does it every round. His goal now is to shoot -10 under his age.
