Deciding between 7 wood and hybrid

Hybrid has a nice trajectory that can be knocked down if necessary. Seven wood goes entirely too high for me and distance control is futile. Hybrid plays nicely on the long par three holes.

Depends on your course and what you need the club for. I have no use for a 7 wood I've found. I hit them to the moon and I don't like using fairway woods on par 3s. I've gone to a Srixon U85 utility which I find plays in between a Hybrid and driving iron for me. Great club. Also use the 818 H1 which I can loft down and flat to open the face and flatten to avoid any hooking. G410 hybrid has this ability too. The above comment re: hooking just means that player hasn't been properly fit for one. The ones I mentioned are two great options.

Β

Basically, if you're using this club for longer par 3s (if you play the tips and have a lot of 190-220 par 3s for example) I'd say hybrid all day. If it's for second shots into long par 4s or par 5s I think you could go either way but whatever you're more comfortable with/fits you better.

I have a Callaway Epic Flash Heavenwood that I can hit almost any shot you'd want except narley rough. Off the tee it goes a mile too. Never pictured having one of these but it is pretty versatile and FOR ME was a better option than a hybrid.

7 wood for me. I'm launch everything pretty high, but no issues ballooning a 7 wood. I like the extra loft versus a hybrid for the same distance out of the rough and feel like I can choke down or take something off the club easier than a hybrid when needed. I also prefer it from fairway bunkers or even punching out from under trees... choking way down, putting the ball way back in my stance, and just letting the wide sole do the work.

Just went through this myself.

I went 7 wood but I decided to add spin and launch to all my clubs this year.

21* 7w vs 21* hybrid7w will likely: Fly higher, launch higher, spin more, land softer.7w might: Go further, be less likely to hook in a stock setting.Hybrid will likely: Be more penetrating, look smaller at address, be slightly less forgiving.Hybrid might: Be easier to control, better out of rough or odd lies.

I go with a heavier, firmer shaft in a 7 wood to add control and slightly lower flight. For me it’s a Diamana DF 80g in a Rogue 21 degree head. Can land it on the green and it stops. Even out of most lies in the rough it works well. Then I go TaylorMade GAPR 4 to 5 iron.

I have both. 21* TS2 7w HZRD smoke 6.0 , & 21* 915h Diamana blue. They do different things for me. Both are good off the tee, but the 7w is mainly for fairway shots 220-230 yd. Hybrid is good for 200-210 fairway shots, but very useful for a get out of trouble type shot. Sometimes a low punch that goes about 150-160, or a open face cut shot that'll start straight and turn right about 30 degree off centerline for about a 185-190 yd shot. Been several times I've been right side rough on a par 5, 2nd shot with trees to deal with, no direct line back to the center, I'll aim left across the fairway and let it turn back in.

I am in my ninth season of playing some variation of 4W + 7W. I'm older, so these two give me much better performance than 3w + 5W.
The 7W gets the ball out of summer rough much better than 3H, and flies in higher and softer from all lies. That said, I will swap out the magic 7W for a 3H during cold weather when the wind is stronger and the rough thinner.
Thoughts on @Fuscinator who "...hooks the **** out of hybrids." ... Golfers who hook hybrids should try heads with a pro or tour design. These have a square face, whereas standard hybrids often have a draw face to help those who have trouble squaring up at impact. Square face helps keep H shots online for stronger swingers.

Hybrid fan here. But I'm an old goat and need the help it has given me. I've seen lots of people say they are easy to hook but I haven't found that to be the case with the ones I own. I can hook them on demand, but I'm not fighting a hook. I have played a 7w before and it was ok but feel I'm more accurate with hybrids. Ymmv.....
