How many times have you changed your grip or swing?

SWING: twice since I started playing in 1987. I now play with a strong grip and tend to draw the ball

GRIP: I went from a baseball grip as a beginner to an interlock grip 5 years later so that my hands works together.

I cant really say that I have ever purposely changed my swing. I will say that it is much shorter than it used to be.

 

I have also never changed my grip. I have been an interlock'er since I started playing. That is not to say my grip has not changed. I do find it creeping strong at times.

That's pretty funny but sad as that was the case with me as well for many years. Finally quit doing that since going to the DeChambeau swing with the Jumbomax almost a year ago. Easiest way to play golf in MY opinion.

I did pretty radically ~25 years ago (age 30) - I had always been a left to right player (started in my teens), and my shot had developed into a high, weak banana ball...ugh.

Worked a full year - strengthen grip, and change swing plane. Became a solid, slight draw player & gained 20-25 yds. Got my 'cap down to ~1.5 in my 30s...then my kids arrived, and shoulder surgery soon after.

Now I'm 55, swing is still usually pretty reliable, but I do get a terrible snap hook miss when my timing goes bad (the thing Hogan fought to eliminate from his game).

It's crazy, now I almost cannot hit a cut...the closest I can come is a high, right block...

Over the last two years I seem to have finally settled in with Manual De Le Torre's swing style and philosophy.

I feel really comfortable with it. At 62, this is probably the swing I'll take into retirement!

I started playing with weak and strong grips this weak for the first time really ever... I was interested to see how it changed ball flight and my swing... a fun little side experiment that I'll probably toy with on the range. Not sure it will ever see the light of the day on the golf course.

On the swing front... I mean it depends, I guess? What do you consider a swing change? If like most of my swing, but want my takeaway to be a little better and I change it, did I change my swing? It's a ship of Theseus type problem. (there's my BA in Philosophy showing off again...)

I have never completely overhauled my swing... never "unlearned" a swing and gone in a completely new or different direction. That sounds miserable... I've managed to jack up my swings in other ways, with multiple small changes... I'm currently diligently working on getting my path to the inside and keeping my back-swing "short".

I've modified my swing a ton over the years... I'd be interested to see my 18 year old swing vs my 22 year old swing (when I was playing my best golf) vs my current swing... No idea how different they would be.

I don't know if there is a swing method or theory that I have not 'tried' in one form or another. For many years I would change grips and swings every round trying to find something that would work. Here is a list of stuff I can remember:

Vardon, Reverse overlap, Double overlap, triple overlap, strong lead weak trail, strong lead strong trail, weak lead weak trail, weak lead strong trail, The Fork grip, any combination of the previous, cross handed, 10 finger, split grip, palm grip, cross handed.

Magic move. From the 70s I think left chest down and left chest up. Screwed me up for a number of years.

For me, sometimes multiple times in the same round! I just never seem to be satisfied with how I am hitting the ball at times and may go to a stronger or weaker grip, flatter or more upright swing, closed or open stance, more traditional set up or even stack and tilt! I am a basket case no doubt.

hi there, saw you mention Doug Hofer (in Bay Area, CA). He was recommended to me by another golf instructor, but I can’t seem to find any info on him.

 

How were your lessons with him? Would you recommend him? Trying to figure out if I should commit to 6 lessons as a complete beginner.

I took lessons from Doug at Fairway Glenn in the early 80s.  The last that I heard he is no longer teaching golf.  

 

I do believe rather strongly that the best thing that you can do as a complete beginner is to take lessons.  I have noticed over the years that new golfers who take lessons right away tend to have much better swings then those who teach themselves.  LOL I wish that I had gotten lessons with I first learned to golf as a kid!  I would recommend Isaac Weintraub at Spring Hills in Watsonville.  Might be too far for you though?

I shot Doug an email and he said he’d be happy to teach me… now I’m a little skeptical if we’re talking about the same Doug haha!

David Balbi in San Carlos is good and knows Doug Hofer really well.  Also Berne Finch at SJ Muni seems to be pretty good.  You can book lessons online with him.  I am sure that you will do well with whomever you end up with!  Definitely a good move to learn sound fundamentals starting out!  LOL I drove to San Jose every day for many many years it is not all that bad of a drive!  To get the most value out of lessons it is important to get as much practice in as you can between lessons...
