Best ball strikers by era

I love ballstriking and ballstrikers.  My favorite aspect of the game.

A question I find myself coming back to, do the guys on tour really need all these shots to be successful?  Is it really going to be worth their time to hone that high draw when it might not be needed but in rare, escape type circumstances, and then what level of control the player already has is sufficient to get out of jail?

Do you really need five different shots to hit the same yardage in modern golf?  Is that line of thinking a holdover from the "old way" to think about playing golf?

I don't think you need to constantly be hitting a variety of shots to score well and to win--and I would actually argue that that was never truly the case in any era. A player who has complete control and confidence in just a few shots can almost always go low. Creative shotmaking is really an art and the loss of that artistry I think is what people fear losing...and that's a debate that I think happens in nearly every era in nearly every sport. Nostalgia is a powerful thing

Good question.  Tom Lehman couldn't hit a fade if his life depended on it and yet he won the British.  Bruce Lietzke won 13 PGAT events and couldn't hit a draw if his life depended on it.

It’s called The Open Championship. 🤓

And the British Open or just the British by millions of us.  And it always has been.

This is a good description from Wiki "The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious.

Just like the "AT&T Byron Nelson" is also called the "Byron Nelson" and "The Nelson".

When I ask somebody if they watched the Nelson they always know exactly what I mean.  The same applies to the British.

Just because millions of Americans call it by the wrong name it doesn’t make it correct. It’s the oldest championship in the world and deserves to be named correctly. No British people that I know of are okay with this.

British announcers back in the day called it the 'British Open' on TV.

So, do you always call the Nelson "The AT&T Byron Nelson" and the Pebble tournament "The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM"?

Anybody that objects to calling it the British probably has bigger problems than the name of a tournament.

BTW, almost everybody called it the British Open many years ago. The Earl of Airlie referred to it as the British Open when awarding Bobby Jones the Claret Jug in 1930 at Hoylake.

Oh, I object to it and I’ll always pull people up on it, but I don’t lose sleep over it.

I have no issue with calling a run of the mill tournament by a shortened name, but that’s not really the same as misnaming.

I’m not sure what the point regarding some random member of the aristocracy misnaming it serves either. Maybe he never played and had no interest in the game.

Tell you what, you carry on calling it whatever you want (which is your right), and I’ll carry on correcting people, which is mine. We’ll reserve the hanging by the nuts from the Tower for multiple offenders. 😎

The British Open is the correct name.

Edit:

LOL unless Ben Hogan and Ken Venturi don't know the name of the tournament that Hogan won in 1953:

Check 18:50 and 19:20 mark for the correct name for the tournament!

Honestly, you’re trying to wind me up, right? This is literally the point I’m making - Americans have been calling it by the wrong name for so long that you all think it’s correct, ffs.

Go ask the R&A what the correct name is.

Nope.  As I remember it at some point maybe 30+ years ago some dudes with a stick up their butt decided it should be the 'Open Championship'.  Whatever!  For me it is the British Open and it always will be.  When I was young I loved watching some sort of late night documentaries of the tournament and it was called the British Open in those shows by Brits no less so there ya go...

Edit:

Here is another reference to the British Open by a British announcer in 1947:

Pretty cool and the announcer does refer to it as the Open in the latter part of the video.
