Matthew Wolff - 9 iron for 199 yards. Ha Ha. OMG!

At 2:51.  Are they jacking up the volume on the swings/impact?   The dude has lasers on his irons.  He is not a big guy, but he is super strong muscling the ball out of the rough.  Pretty amazing.  He seems almost immune to the rough.

The fairways look pretty pristine.   The course does not look impossible but the greens and around the greens are insane.

The play makes sense. Let's say he hits his 9 165. Down wind add 10-15 plus firm greens another 10-15 which puts him in the 185-195 range when he is planning the shot. If he is trying to make sure the ball doesn't go over the green then he takes a hard 9 over easy 8 to make sure of that. Ball just went a little short and landed soft.

Watching that video of Wolff shows that he left another few shots on the table.  It could have easily been a 63 or 62.  It is also apparent that if you drive it far enough to have wedges into every green, the rough isn't that penal.  IMO an argument in favor of having a tournament ball that doesn't go so far.

this is a silly topic.  You have it correct, he didn’t hit a 9 iron 199 yards.  He hit his 9 iron the exact distance it normally goes and planned for several other situational variables to help it fly further than it normally would.

Short hitters are still gonna be shorter than long hitters--regardless of the ball.

I assume Wolff hits his irons quite far, his typical 9 probably flies 160-165 I'd guess. Couple that with downwind and playing to land it 20 yards short of the pin and have it release and it's not unthinkable. The total yardage isn't really relevant when they are playing to a spot. It's a different mentality than your average public course when you can count on the ball stopping pretty quickly. Also over the green is probably dead.

I played with a guy at Doral last year who hit an 8 iron into a 205 yard par 3 while I was smoking my 5 iron to the front of the green... got up there and he was on the back of the green. Insanely long with his irons..so it can be done.

I know there are super-long hitters out there...but how in the heck do they handle their gaps?

Do they hit 'chippy' sand wedges from 150?

I'm correcting myself.....it was a PW to 170 yds, hole #7..............That's one heck of a distance for a PW.

You have to account for Bryson wedges being the length of a 7 iron and the loft of an 8 iron..

He is a good sized kid...and look at the size of his legs.  Built like a baseball player, gets a lot of his power from lower body action.  Total stud

The only difference between Wolff and myself is I'm 66 years old and built like a wuss. My 9 iron is good for about 120 yards. Other than that.......we're very similar.
