What’s the Worst Feeling in Golf?

The first four or five rounds every spring when it seems like you've completely forgotten how to play golf after the winter layoff.

Worst feeling?

A bad shot is a bad shot. A chance whilst leaving it short is bad on a good day... But worst?

The worst is getting to a better spot in your game, feeling good about it, and then strangely deciding you needed to overhaul everything. You wreck your swing so badly that 7 months later you strain to remember your last great shot. Everything is garbage.

Your brain knows it. Your body knows it. You feel it through your entire swing. You have zero confidence, your results back it up, and you cannot reason your way out of the hole. You fall deeper and deeper and it feels like you'll never get out. You start thinking about giving up golf again, but at least you're not foolish enough to do that. So you power through the tough slog onward until you finally figure it out.

When you do it feels great and all is suddenly right in the world again. Yet, right before the "Ah Hah....."

THAT is the worst feeling in golf. I see a lot of folks have forgotten what "worst" means. 😄 😄😄

Missing a birdie? That's the worst feeling?

Well I guess it's all relative to where things are in your game....... 😛

Nightmare, you are living a nightmare.

Been there before and it sucks, kinda slipped back into it the last few rounds trying to play around an injury.

By any chance are you seeing a "The golfing machine" instructor?  That was my first downfall.

Honestly, it was a combination of things, which is too much to get into here. 😄

The reality is, I am far too hard on myself and it leads me to believe things are worse than they really are. My swing was fine but for a mild early extension. It was something I could have worked on patiently, but I am too impatient.

I will say this. I feel that I made an important discovery in the past few weeks that has helped me start digging my way out. The last two range sessions were very big improvements. I feel the snap coming back into my swing.

I should have just trusted my process. I wasn't that far off, but I ended up pushing myself well off course and man it is the worst nightmare of golf I have ever experienced. So here's to hoping recent developments will lead to climbing fully out.

Maybe the worst really does come before the best.... 😄

I'll make a top 10 list in no particular order.

1. Four putt (and short range 3 putts)

2. Shanks

3. Chunking a wedge right in front of you

4. Blading a wedge into oblivion

5. Snap hooking or banana slicing a tee ball out of play

6. Topping it

7. Choking away a career round

8. Losing a ball that should have almost certainly been found

9. Bad bounces penalizing a great shot - think Tiger on 15 on Friday at the 2013 Masters type bounces

10. Leaving a putt short dead on line / cruel lip outs.

Nope. The last game of the season is tomorrow before the course closes for the winter, and you wake up to a heavy blanket of snow.

Stripping perfect driver after perfect driver on the range before a tournament, and stepping up on the tee and wondering how I'm going to keep it in play when I "only" have 100 yards left and right until the OB stakes.

Then hitting it OB, then having to hit it again........ 😬😁

Seconded. I start feeling it around 13 or 14.

This day, this excursion with friends, this time away from the grind, does in fact have an end and you are closer to that end than you are to the beginning.

Ugh.
