What’s the Worst Feeling in Golf?

As in,

Only one in the group to drive to the front of a short par 4 green, skull chip across green off the back, skull next chip back off the front of the green, finally chip on twelve feet past the hole and three putt.

jeeeezzzzz…..it sucked 😞

First hole where I need driver.  Nice  wide fairway.  Par 5, but a shorter one.  A good drive, and I might actually get a chance at a very rare birdie.  (I don't even dare dream of an eagle chance.)

Been hitting it straight, or even drawing, for the few warm-up drives I took on the range that day.  There's a busy road that runs along the right side of the hole, albeit there's about 30 yds of rough and trees before the golf course fence.  No nets.  I think you can see where this is going...

I aim down the middle of the fairway, do everything the same as I did on the range a hour prior, and hit a towering drive that starts slicing hard.  Passes the fairway, goes over the right-side rough, and trees, and is still climbing...

Absolutely horrible feeling.  I just knew I was going to next hear crunching glass and crushing metal.

(Nothing happened.  Besides me then lying 3 on the tee.  I think the ball cleared the oncoming lanes and landed in the median.  Driver stayed in the bag the rest of the round.)

The worst I have experienced was sitting at par on the 18th tee, and hooking my tee shot OB.  😄

Nothing quite beats waiting on the green to clear on a par five while another group waits on the tee to hit their drives only to dead top the shot 10 yards.

Following up a great shot/hole with absolute garbage.

Last Night I went and played the back 9 at my home course. +1 on the first three coming into the dogleg right par 5 13th. Trees on both sides and a pond long right with a ditch crossing the fairway long straight. I lay back with a 4 iron to be safe get a great bounce down the middle and ended up going about 245y. 260y in to a front pin nestled in between left and right front green bunkers. Smoke a perfect 3w that runs between the bunkers and settles about 15 feet and I roll the putt dead center for eagle.

Step on the 14 tee. Trees left, pond long right with a fairway that narrows the further you hit, hardest hole on the course. Try to lay back with a 6i but its a flier and barely carries into the pond. Take my drop in a bad position in the rough and chunk my 3rd into the ditch crossing the fairway. Miss the green right with my 5th. terrible chip to 12' but luckily roll in the putt for a triple. Really the only poorly struck shot was the one that ended up in the ditch but I was compounding errors at that point.

Sunday I was cruising along nicely at even on the 9th hole par 5 tee box. Hit a OK pull drive into the left rough, had a decent lie and hit a layup 5 iron to get back into position to try to get on the green that is quite uphill and guarded by bunkers.

The 5 iron was a very good shot, high and straight with a slight draw to dead center of the fairway with two other folks watching, should be 100-125 yds out.....never found the ball.

Looked long and short of where it should have been and checked for a plugged ball but it was not that high a shot and fairly dry.

Just gone, there was a group of our guys coming up the adjacent hole and they did not pick it up. Very odd

October in Trondheim - knowing that the courses are going to close for the winter you're frantically looking at the weather forecast for a break and hoping the frost stays away as long as possible...our 18 hole layout at the course closes on the 15th to prep for the winter and this is the long term forecast

On Sunday I had two...

Started hole 1 with the always-fun three-putt bogey.

Hole 10, one-upped myself with a three-putt par.

I had one of those weekends where just nothing seemed to go right. Bad shots out of nowhere. Bad lies. Ridiculous bad breaks (hit a greenside sprinkler head on the fly and ball bounced 15 yards into the woods).

First day managed to grind it out and play the last 7 holes in even after playing the first 11 in +10.

Second day somehow even ended up worse than that.

This game sometimes...

For me, the worst feeling in golf is to have an otherwise fantastic or milestone round with one significant mistake, especially at the end, that really detracts from the joy that you would otherwise feel.

Case in point: I struggled to break 90 for a long time. One day, it all finally worked out and I got to the 18th hole knowing that unless I made a huge mistake, I was going to do it. I remember watching my approach shot in the air and the happiness as it landed on the green just a few feet away from the pin. I got up to my ball and proceeded to miss the very short birdie putt. I was annoyed, but tapped in for par. I added up my score after the round and it was 82, easily the best that I had ever shot at the time. So what's the bad part? When adding up my score, I realized that my short miss on 18 had been for a 39 on the back, so instead of shooting 42-39, I ended up shooting 42-40. Knowing that I had choked on my first sub-40 nine (and on a short putt on the final hole) really killed my enjoyment of breaking 90, even though it was far and away my best round at the time. That one stuck with me for quite a while until I finally did break 40 for nine holes.

I also did this another time during another (nearly) career round where I had a bunch of birdies and my first eagle. Unfortunately, I had a big, big blow-up hole in the middle (a 10 I think) that killed any chance of beating my personal best. I still ended up with a great round, but I kept thinking about what could have been. Hey, at least that one wasn't the last hole!
