I’m Giving Up on Arccos

Recommended Posts

Arccos doesn't work for me

Everytime I get on the 10th it thinks I'm on the 9th. I hit a putt on the 9th, hit a driver on the 10th so the algorithm should know I've changed holes. The last round my watch said I was on 9, the phone app showed my drive on 10 so gave no option to "play this hole"

image.png.d88fe4a6139bfb7a1f988aa63f013f87.png

Then it just jams up and stops switching

image.png.b073de6ab09458d6e5a38b201bbab6f5.png

There unfortunately is no way of dealing with this after the round. From my extensive research there use to be a move the shot to another hole function, but it's missing from my version (android)

Spent time with support, sadly this is their response

image.png.2d45a4344adb0c789e4e80266f40e6ab.png

Which seems absolutely incredible to me.

Shame

I've been noticing a lot of weird shots of well being picked up on Arccos, luckily in my cases just a few deletes and it's fine but some are not and I have to add them in.

It's been many years since I last used Arccos but used to be in the web Dashboard you could edit the shots on a hole, including adding shots. I had a couple times the whole deal quit working and I was able to finish out rounds by going to each of the final few holes and add the shots manually in the Dashboard.

Does it not work that way now?

You can add and remove shots, but not move from 1 hole to another. No point in having the gps data if I have to throw it away and guess when I add it.

Honestly the software design is horrible.

Having dealt with Foresight (GC Quad) software and customer support recently - I've gained a new level of appreciation for Arccos as a software and support company.  Talk about awful...

Since cancelling my Arccos subscription (primarily on the basis of them not giving me an option to cancel on my own through the dash board) - I've really started thinking about what I'll miss if I don't renew.  TBH - I really like the app.  The adjustments are nice to see, distances are clear, finding the right spot to lay up or miss - it does it as well as any software I've used.

Shot tracking works pretty well for me most of the time (though I play primarily at a public course that gets a LOT of play in a major city - so they probably have great data for my course.  When I've played just a few miles away my experience was completely different as the cell coverage was terrible and I felt shockingly blind).

One question I have - Does anyone know if the handicap under the "Player" section is legit?  I gave up my GHIN not too long ago (also out of spite because the site auto renewed and wouldn't let me self service cancel).  What I mean is - does it account for equitable stroke control on it's own?  Does it calculate the same way as the an official HCP?

I'm gonna give the 3rd Gen sensors a try as a final shot for Arccos. As MysteryV above said, I really like the app, i really like not having to track my stats during a round.

@MysteryV No, Arccos does not calculate the handicap the same way, I think it assigns a player handicap based on strokes gained. My Arccos handicap at least has always been different from my USGA one even thou it has the same rounds. Why Arccos has not introduced a features similar to TheGrint with auto-upload is absolutely beyond me. I'd happily pay another $25 a year for that.

Interesting - and thank you.  How different are they in your experience?  Is there any rhyme or reason as to where they differ?

I wonder what the basis for their strokes gained metrics are if they aren't using USGA handicaps?

For me, the Arccos handicap was always about .5 to a full stroke higher than my GHIN.

I like golf. A lot.

There's no particular relationship between the Strokes Gained calculation and the way USGA handicaps are computed. They correlate because the most influential factors are distance and scoring but everything else is different.

When you step onto the tee of a 350 yard Par 4, the Strokes Gained method simply looks up "350 yard tee shot" and comes up with the expected number of strokes that a baseline player (usually PGA Tour averages) will take to finish that hole. Strokes Gained treats every 350 yard hole exactly the same. SG expects you (on average) to take the same number of strokes on a wide open 350-yard Par 4 in the middle of a pasture with no hazards and a flat green or on a 350-yard Par 4 at Oakmont with deep rough, bunkers, a hellishly sloped green and playing way uphill.

The USGA system takes into account whether there are water hazards, OB, bunker, elevation changes, width the fairways, width of the corridor between the tree lines, how tricky the green is. A particular 450-yard hole may figure into the Course Rating and Slope Rating with a variety of values.

I haven’t had an issue with Arccos. Keep my phone in my pocket. Might miss a shot on a windy day, that’s about it.

my issue is with the price, I can’t play golf year round in Canada so why do I get nailed with the full fee? Prob cancel it for that main reason

Unbelievable!

Unless your phone was hot enough to boil water at some point that is extremely unlikely to be accurate. Either Arccos was running longer than that and the power management app just didn't account for it correctly or a bunch of other app usage got lumped into Arccos. There's no way any app could use over half the energy stored in the battery in 1 minute without the phone basically exploding.

EDIT: Am dumb, didn't see the date to realize this was almost two months old.

  • 1 year later...

I bought a new pair of irons that came with a Arccos trial.  I paid $9.99 for a box of sensors and just started using Arccos last month.  I had no problems pairing my clubs but did have two (2) sensors that were bad. I contacted Arccos and they sent me two new ones right away. At that point I still hadn’t played a round with them but finally did once I paired the new replacement sensors.   I have an old Ping putter and the first thing that happened was on about hole #8 I realized my putts had stopped recording after hole #1.  When I looked at my putter, the sensor had fallen out because the original grip was dry rotted at the end of it especially around the hole to which the sensor was screwed.  I thought someone might pick it up and turn it in but that didn’t happen.  I reached out to Arccos about 4 days before my trial period ended and asked if I could buy a new putter sensor and have them extend my trial another 6 weeks.  They actually ended up giving me the replacement putter sensor (at no cost to me) and extending my trial another month.  Nice trade-off for sure. I do have the same issues with flag locations that others have. I don’t care for keeping my phone in my pocket while playing golf and I don’t want to purchase the Link yet until I know I’m going to continue using them after the trial.  So far, their customer service has been great but they can be hard to catch on the phone.   They are only available 4 hrs during the day but emails are answered fairly quickly.
