Reed picked up the ball to determine if it was embedded before the official came over. Ken Tackett not a fan of that.

I don't think it is right for the player to "pick up" the ball in rough that deep before they call an official over to check the status of the ball.

Agree just a bad look. What timing though with the introduction of the rules guy.

It’s not a bad look. He was trying to get around the rules. Really impossible to tell if the ball was embedded if you take it out before inspection. Some on Twitter are saying the ball did not embed on the fly either.

Yeah, just saw the replay. Pretty sure a ball can only be embedded if it ends up in its original pitch mark? That obviously bounced and settled 2-3' away. Crazy...

Does anyone know for the average person playing (i.e. without access to a rules official whom I agree should have inspected the ball before it was moved)?

If my ball maybe plugged in deep rough where it's hard to tell with the naked eye, am I forced to play it if I can't identify it as plugged just by looking, or is it legal to lift the ball, similar to if needing to identify the ball?

I play some very wet courses, and I'm not sure I've ever encountered exactly this, but I easily could.

EDIT: My instinct would be that I just have to smack it or pull it but risk penalty if it wasn't embedded.

It is legal to lift it to check under 16.4...mark & lift. It's no longer required to announce why you are doing it.

Best practice is to let fellow competitors know...

Reed getting roasted on tweeters.

Here is the shot

Did anyone actually tell Reed his ball was embedded on the first hop or did he lie? He’s a cheater. He’s undefendable.

I wonder how hard Reed had to press down on that ball in order to create the perceived inbedded mark...

No arguing Reed’s talent. However, with his history, perceived or otherwise, picking the ball up before the official showed up is a bad look.  And him saying the ball didn’t bounce into that lie was incorrect.  And unless lift, clean, and place is allowed outside of the fairway, how is it okay to pick it up and put it back without penalty (according to the announcer).

If you are going to call a rules official over, don’t pick up the ball. Reed is a cheater. He knows it and loves the controversy.

Because he knows the rules?

I think the issue is whether (a) the official was examining the correct ball mark by the time he got there, because the ball was no longer in place to differentiate between its first point of impact and where it ultimately settled, or (b) Reed may have done something to push the ball downwards.

That's what people are getting at, I think.

What they are getting at is another jump to conclusions rules party, lol.

Reed didn't break any rules by marking and checking if its embedded. Yet, from my experiences with pros in this setting you should typically tell your playing partners that you're checking it for whatever reason and one of his playing partners should have been right there next to him.

Given its Reed though, I'm sure he's manipulated that lie to his advantage.

If Reed wants to make the embedded ball call on his own and check its position, then fine. But if you are going to call a rules official over, give him all the evidence he needs to make a proper decision.
