It's impossible to watch the 18th hole and not have flashbacks to Ariya's meltdown in 2013. Ugh. I still put 75% of the blame on the caddie. Needing only a bogie to win, there's no way she should have been hitting a club from the fairway that would bring the bunkers into play. If I'm her caddie, I'm snapping her 3 wood over my knee when we're standing at the ball in the fairway, and I'm handing her a 7 iron.

Putts pre GIR:

Patty Tavatanakit                    1.67

Atthaya Thitikul                       1.36

Ariya Jutanugarn                     1.46

Nanna Koerstz Madsen          1.50

Lydia Ko                                   1.54

Impressive!

Wait until Patty putts like Atthaya!

I didn't see her first eagle, but if she holed out from the fairway as she did on her second eagle, then that will do wonders for the putts per GIR  🙂

Needless to say, it's good to see the "home team" doing well so far!

Hindsight is 20/20.

IMO...Ariya lost because of 5 lousy shots.

A missed 2nd shot

A lousy 4th shot bunker blast

A 5th shot lousy putt from off the fringe

An ok 6th shot

A lousy missed 7th shot short putt.

Miller always said most critical short putts missed on the 72nd hole are missed right....maybe because it was uphill...Ariya missed left.

One could see how Ariya was really rattled after a poor 4th shot...she was young at the time.

Ariya was only 17 at the time....not a veteran with golf experience to play the 18th more conservative.

I don't know if her loop was a FT caddie or just a local loop who was just there to lug the bag around.

If it was a FT veteran LPGA loop on her bag for a while...yes I could see he/she talking Ariya to lay up.

Ariya could have skulled or chunked her 3rd shot if she laid up....and then struggled afterwards to get the ball in the hole ASAP.

Look at Ariya hacking it around from 15 yards yesterday on 18 leading to a bogey.

IMO....I would never blame a loop...it's always the player who hits the shot.

A player loses because of poor execution.

I imagine Ariya is not easy to loop for.

At the 2015 CWO....Ariya was playing this STUPID silent game at the range with Les Luark...it was ridiculous.

Uggg!!  Was just watching Golf Today and looks like they're going with "Patty T", I understand if during tournament a player we never knew about jumps up the leaderboard and they have a name that difficult to pronounce and people have a hard time with it, this is common IMO.  But when you have a player who is gonna be fixture and probably a top 10 player for a long time, not learning the proper pronunciation of said name is IMO embarrassing and lazy.

Since Thai golfers are on the rise, it may be worth spreading this info on names and Thailand...

It's entirely proper and normal in Thailand to refer to someone by their First name (or even a nickname) - Last names/Surnames are more for official uses like Birth/Marriage certificates and so on.

So for the Tennis player you might remember called Paradon Srichipan - he would be referred to as Paradon (or khun Paradon if even more polite, like "Mr" Paradon) when mentioned in newspapers, on tv etc etc. His friends and family would use his nickname, which happens to be 'Ball' (as in tennis ....) - which in Thai ends up sounding like 'Bon'.

But rather than have me 'Farangsplaining' it to you - here's a link to a Thai explaining it:-

Thai Culture: Thai names explained, why are they so long and weird? (ohmissannabella.com)

"Because of the long, cumbersome nature of Thai first names, it is also very normal for Thai people to have known someone for a long time but never know their first names. I have a lot of friends that I have no idea what their first names are. You only use your first names for legal documents and in formal settings. In a daily conversation, it’s always the nickname that is used. So it is very common to have people in the office yelling “Is there a Patchaporn here?” even though they have worked with these people for months"

"Additionally, it is also so easy for people to create their own last names too. This is because of religious, and sometimes personal superstitious reasons. The process of changing a name is not complicated to do and Thai laws have made it possible and even easy to do it multiple times. I know someone who has changed her name three times and in a process of creating a fourth one just because the third one is starting to sound a little “boring”."

Yes, I was reading about that somewhere.  I have a few friends too that use different names in public from their legal names.  She said I was special because I knew her real names (first and family names).

In many respects its similar to Brazil, where they shorten names to nicknames ... just think of all of the footballers over the years with none more famous than Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) ... and then there are so many ... my favourites were from the late 1970s - early 80s teams ... Junior, Socrates, Zico, Edinho ... prior, it was Rivelino, Jairzinho, Garrincha, or Alberto or Carlos Alberto (Torres).  😂

@coops: Fabulous writeup, thanks...

would you have a Listing/Link to the Thai nicknames for various players?

eg Ariya = “Mae” a.k.a. “Little Sister” in Thai / Chinese 妹妹 (changed spelling to “[Pro]May”, ostensibly for easier pronunciation for Western media): https://www.bangkokpost.com/sports/1270787/the-rise-and-rise-of-a-girl-called-may

..Paphangkorn ‘Patty’ Tavatanakit= “Pro Meow”? https://golfistathai.com/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-patty-tavatanakit/

..Atthaya Thitikul: “Jeen/ Jeeno.Jat / Jen?”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atthaya_Thitikul

.. Moriya? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moriya_Jutanugarn

..Pornanong Phatlum = Waen (แหวน)'https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornanong_Phatlum

..Bonus points if you remember  their Thai trailblazer ie “Virada Nirapathpongporn”, often considered as a “one of the best NCAA D1 collegiate career”, and “what could have been a decent pro career, if not for injuries” talent from Thailand (and erstwhile tv presenter on foxsportsasia for Golf events)🇹🇭

Not so hot on their nicknames...

Ariya and Moriya are mostly referred to by those First names in papers etc - although due to the English transliteration being so  varied/shonky... the pronunciation of their names is not what you've probably heard (and they're too diplomatic to call any presenters out on it... and another good reason for Patty to choose to go with a Western nickname for sanity's sake)...

Ariya should be really transliterated as Ariiyaa - the double ii meaning it's a long 'e' sound, like the 'ee' in tee ;-). The second syllable 'yaa' is a long 'a' sound which sounds like the 'ar' in par... so change the P to a Y and you get the right 'yar' sound... and the first syllable is like 'Harry' wihout the H - so my made up phonetic English for it is  "Arry-Yar".

And her sister is like "Morry-Yar"... if that makes sense. 🙂

In Thai script it's sounds as it reads, as Thai is a phonetic writing system with relatively way, way less exceptions and odditites than English - there's 44 consonants and 16 vowels in the Thai alphabet (and 4 tone markers) 🤪.

Wait, is that the English pronunciation of 'par' (also bar, car), or the butchered version used in Boston and Down Under, 'paaah'? Lol.

@Supermilo I think you’re correct wrt the honorific / sign of respect

...but thought I’d heard “Khun” and “P” are to address Thai folks who are “older than you”

ie so these young Thai gals (some teenagers) might still giggle at being referred to as P’Jeen? (Albeit Nong’Jeen = might seem too familiar?)

Unlike English, the Thai language is quite traditional. ... There are two words you are likely to hear often while in Thailand, that is pee and nong. Pee which is also written as phi, means elder brother and sister. While nong means younger brother and sister.

They are! (Older than me)... In the game of golf 😂... But yeah, in my stint in SG, I travelled to TH on biz every week for 3 months straight, had quite a few clients who I'd address as Khun, and P'.... Nong is usually for "people who'd report to me" vs "khun/p'" who were essentially "bosses"/"people who paid my consulting fees 😁"

Told ya a  3 foot putt on #2 is the most difficult shot on the course lol

@StoochAriya’s gonna say “hold my beer 🍺 “

ie remember her experience on the 18th par 5

(a) yesterday: 2 to get near-green/fringe... then chunked a chip 🍟 and bogeyed the hole

(b) Ariya in 2013, on same 18th hole?
