New Netflix docu-series on PGA Tour

The less successful the player, the more interesting the episode.   Really liked the Dahmen piece.  Disappointed that his beverage of choice in between rounds at Open qualifying was White Claws, but it was still hilarious that he went out and shot 65 afterwards.

Check out "The Grind" on Youtube. I watched the first 2 episodes last night, think there are 8 total. Episodes appear to be 20-30 minutes long, guys & gals you've probably never heard of chasing their dreams. I think it's produced by The Firepit Collective, Allen Shipnuck & Matt Ginella are involved.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out!

Joel said he would be the #1 player in the world if everyone had to drink a 6 pack prior to their round.  I identify with him.

Anyone saying they should focus more on club tech is missing the boat here on their target demographic. That’s like saying ‘Drive to Survive’ should focus more on the tech of the car… The Netflix n chill crowd would be turning it off in droves.

Does the Netflix and chill crowd even really pay attention to anything they are watching?

I will say I believe they do. Because they are always telling me “watch this”, “watch that” blah blah and then tell me why etc. So yeah, I’d say they are really into it. But I could be wrong.

Dont disagree. Just saying that for the average guy off the street that this is aimed at - they arent going to want to see how boring practice rounds actually are or watch a guy testing the differences between the newest Ventus release.

I get that and they wouldn’t have needed to get that far into the weeds. Anyway it’s moot now, any future season won’t do a complete reset. I just think they could have told a more coherent, complete story.

If they make another season, I hope they put more attention on the lesser known players.  I would like to see the struggles of a sub-top 60 player trying to make it on the tour.  The top players get all the TV and press coverage.  The TV coverage used to cover Tiger no matter how far back he was and only touched on some other players when they made a long putt or a miraculous approach.  I really enjoyed the Joel Dahmen episode because I knew almost nothing about him.  There are certainly more stories similar to his.

I agree.  I found the inside look/backstory of the lesser knowns like Dahmen, Theegala & Pereira to be the most Interesting/ Entertaining.

I think they had a pretty good cross section...

Ep 1 - Jordan / JT - Two stars, even if Jordan has been struggling

Ep 2 - Brooks / Sheffler - A fallen star and a rising star

Ep 3 - Poulter - Journeyman faces an uncertain future

Ep 4 - Dahmen - mid-tier player battling his confidence

Ep 5 - DJ / Fitzpatrick - Alpha dog / good young player w/o a signature  win (prior to the US Open)

Ep 6 - Finau / Morikawa - Natural talent from unorthodox background slowly getting better / blue chip prospect that arrived fully formed

Ep 7 - Theegala / Mito - Life as a rookie!

Ep 8 - Rory - Biggest star in the game, non-Tiger division

As I've said, lots of room for improvement on structure and story telling but I think they got a good mix of stars / journeymen / newbies.

According to an interview from Brooks Koepka for Golf Magazine, there was a lot they left out of his story, so it makes me wonder how much truth we're even getting in this series.

They had hundreds if not thousands of hours of footage to distill into 8 episodes. Doesn't it go without saying that some stuff gets left out in cases like that? Also I'm sure Brooks would have nothing to gain by lying to make himself look like some kind of victim here...

I played with a guy like that years ago...a very good friend of a friend of mine. I was a beginner and they were both scratch or better. Apparently this guy was scratch when sober, but could shoot course records when slightly tipsy. If he was allowed to drink on the course, he'd be a touring pro (his dad actually was back in the day)...

How in the world did Tony Finau become so good by hitting golf balls at a mattress in a closed garage???  I'm going to have to find a documentary on him because I'm most interested in that.  Seems like a recipe for ingraining poor swing habits.

I don't see how it would necessarily be bad. Maybe it trained him to make solid contact.

But they also said they would go to an actual driving range around once per week to see their ball flights.

And I'm sure once he got a little older he started playing actual golf courses and that's probably when he got a lot better.

No doubt there is always much footage that gets left out of shows like this, thankfully, but my concern is always context.  It can often be changed by leaving things out.

It’s modern day reality television. If you went in thinking you were getting true unadulterated reality then… 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm not that naive, but there's truth, stretching the truth, and outright lies.  I prefer the first, can somewhat tolerate the second, and can't excuse the latter.

Leaving things out isn’t lying. Did Brooks say they lied?

It's lying if it removes context or places something in a context that wasn't there.  No, he didn't say they lied but that "A lot of stuff wasn’t seen, but hey, it is what it is.”. Just made me wonder if some of what wasn't seen would have changed my impression of the episode.

What it is is what every reality show is. They chop it up/edit it to portray what they want the audience to see. I get your point, but it’s to be expected going in. I was watching a documentary and they said the only true reality show (just simply showing what was going on organically w/no manipulation) was the very 1st season of the ‘Real World’ on MTV. It’s all just entertainment.

I think Koepka got mentally destroyed by losing to Phil in the 2021 PGA Championship.  He spent a lot of time cultivating his tough-guy, DGAF image, which people bought into because he won majors and picked fights with everyone's favorite whipping-boy, Bryson.  Phil took him out at the PGA, which shattered his confidence, and he hasn't won anything since.

The likelihood is that what they showed onscreen is far closer to the real Koepka than anything they left out.

What are you looking for that would make a difference? I heard his language and watched his GF strut around like she was auditioning for a soft porn flick and I’m pretty sure that Netflix didn’t make that up. I saw and heard plenty enough to surmise that he’s a shallow personality worried as much about image as anything else. Unfortunately, that’s probably going to come crashing down on him at some point.

After seeing his GF strut around like she did in front of the camera, I’m fairly confident their future will be filled with plenty more adulterated regardless of what Netflix does.

Which is why I don't watch reality shows.  I expect this to be different because it's not manufactured reality like "survivor" or "the bachelor", but is following people doing a job that they were already doing.  Perhaps I expect too much.

Amen to that.  I had an indoor net as a teenager for winter, and came out with the most wicked slice ever in spring.  That was the end of that.

God given talent and ability! His dad “once in a while we’d go to a real range to see where the ball was actually going”. Pretty amazing stuff indeed.
