Z Star XV user, what softer ball?

SullyForged

Recommended Posts

I have played Srixon Z Star XVs for over ten years. They’ve always been a solid choice for me performance wise. Lately, I’ve finally gotten the bug for something the feels and sounds softer. Still looking for a high spin ball with a lower trajectory on chips. What’s out there that I should try? Thanks.

  • SullyForged changed the title to Z Star XV user, what softer ball?

If you’re looking for a lower compression ball that acts like a high compression ball, the objective tests will tell you that it’s really tough to fight the compression/spin function. Two that succeed to a fair degree might be -

Bridgestone BX S - Matches all three of your considerations. Spins a lot, low to mid flight, and softer than the VX.

2019 TP5 - Spins about the same on longer clubs but probably less on shorter shots. One of golf’s great balls. More difficult to find and obviously won’t get any easier.

An alternative might also be the 2021 TP5x. It has a very soft cover that was mostly intended to increase short iron spin, but it also makes the ball feel soft for its compression. Some have found durability issues YMMV.

Completely agree with these options. Great balls that are softer, yet have a lower flight and really good spin 100+ and in.

Srixon make great balls and if you are familiar with XV but want a softer feel, i would consider the regular Z-Star. The differences in numbers between the XV and regular z-star are pretty small, especially in the newer models.  If not there´s allot of great soft feeling balls out there. Pro v1, tp5, BXS, chrome soft etc. etc. Just try a few models and see what suits you the best.

Good luck 🙂

Regular Chromesoft. I throw this ball in on occassion. It spins and backs up more than I expected, very pleasant ball to use as an alternative to my regular XV ball.

MTB Black is not as soft imo.If you want an equivalent Chromesoft in the hard-like XV, then the Chromesoft LS is a great ball as well.

Z-star vs. Z-star XV is mainly noticeable in mid-irons.  The XV is going to fly a few yards further and spin a bit less than the regular Z-star in my experience.

The regular Z-star, would be my recommendation.

Other soft balls in that range, Bridgestone BXS, Callaway chromesoft, TP5, regular ProV1 among others .

That being said the XV is a great ball it sounds powerful when hit well.

ProV1 undoubtedly fits the bill.

Snell MTBx is slightly softer and otherwise a very similar ball.

I'm going to disagree with this. From a distance perspective that may be true, but it's night and day difference to me on all partial shots, and everything 100y and in. Feel/sound on the Zstar is so much different than the XV. Putting included.

Was only talking distance / performance.  Not feel.

ProV1 or TP5x. I came from the Z-Star XV as well. Its been years since I switched, but those were the 2 that stood out the most to me. Eventually decided on the ProV for 2 reasons. 1. you can buy them almost anywhere 2. I find a ton of them so I can stay consistent even if im playing with the balls I find. Anything else I find ill give to my higher index buddies who gladly fill every pocket of their bags full. I seriously dont know how their backs hold up with carrying all those balls in their bags. Im a 6 ball guy, 3 new ones, 3 "used" ones and that's it.

I picked up a couple dozen with credit I had, was very surprised to see the added spin, without being too much.

Nice ball
