Any high-end putters built for “slight-arc” putting strokes?

BallerNate

Recommended Posts

When I go to the golf shop, I see putters labelled for “slight-arc” putting strokes, and those seem to be the ones that work best for me since I definitely arc my stroke, especially on shorter putts.

But the higher end putters like Scotty Cameron, Bettinardi, Odyssey Toulon, EVNROLL etc don’t have similar labels, so wondering if any are built specifically for arcing strokes?

Anything with some toe hang should work.  Plumbers neck hang not heel shafted hang is probably a good starting point.

As far as the labels, that’s just there for reference and self fitting for the average guy shopping for putters.  If you really want fit get on a SAM  or something similar and find the right putter. Some put it on there others don’t.  The higher end putter usually don’t have it, it’s assumed you should know, or don’t care.
When I did this the best fit was a $125 Odyssey.  I was prepared to spend Scotty prices walking into the store.

Thanks very much, definitely appreciate it! What does SAM stand for?

My current gamer is a plumbers neck with 35* of toe hang (TaylorMade TP Collection Soto), and it’s worked the best for me of any putter I’ve tried so far.

It’s a 2017 that’s showing some wear though, and am definitely curious to see if there could be a better option for me out there. Tried an Odyssey White Hot Pro #1, and an EVNROLL ER 1.2 over the last few months, but neither worked nearly as well for me as my trusty Soto.

Have one machined for you.  Exact weight, toe hang, loft and lie you need.  Whatever alignment aid you want for about 500-600 bucks.

If u are serious about getting a new putter.. Then get fit for one https://www.scienceandmotion.com/puttlab/

I went in for my fitting thinking I was going to pick up a certain putter and I came out with something I would have never tried out

Quintic is supposed to be superior to a Sam.. I would get on either if u can

Go see John at TXG Toronto he'll get you fit and all the specs you need to build a putter with a custom putter maker.

Get a putter fitting. I had the SAM fitting last year and It has helped me a lot  It made me know what my putting stroke really was, my faults, etc. From there you will know what putter fits you.

Thanks for the info everyone! Just checked out the SAM website and reached out to the contact person here in Toronto.

Will definitely consider a putter fitting at TXG also since they were great for my Driver fitting.

I’m 6’7 and usually use a 36” putter, so I’m sure that’s a factor for the specific putter specs that I need as well.

Quintic is better than SAM I think cause they don't attach a sensor onto the putter using Quintic, just a camera and 2 stickers. But SAM is better than nothing.

Also John is who I'm working with on my putting cause you know I need to improve that area more 😂

I think this is the most beneficial fitting people should be looking into.. Everyone wants to drop a few strokes from the game.. Yet 90% go into there local golf town or what have u.. Roll the rock a few times on the carpet and say ya this is the one for me..

Then take it out to the course only to find its not the magic stick they thought it was..

The one thing I was really amazed at.. was putter shape and how it had a bias on my aim.. I would have bet money I aimed them all dead straight

I was fit for my putter a few years ago.. Last year I started to work with a dedicated putting coach.. Not the local. PGA guy.. An actual putting coach.. It has done wonders for my game..

I am thinking about going to see him next year for another putter fitting as my putting has changed drastically in the last year

I was fit on Sam and I was amazed at what it showed..

My current putting coach works with Quintic

Time to part with some of this covid money.. Seeing as I probably won't be heading south this winter

Do u do lessons on the Quintic ?

I think this is where these units could really shine

Yeah you’re right, that’s where most guys probably lose the most strokes, but it’s not treated as one of the most important parts of golf.

Great info and I’m definitely going to take all this and run with it!

Lol.... feel like there are a lot of posts to find info and understand the hosel types and how toe hang work and what promotes what.
You telling me you seen an anser 2 w the slight arc sticker and couldn’t tell that another plumbers neck would relatively promote the same stroke.?? Lol

SAM and Quintic are both good, if you have someone who understands each system well you'll have a great fitting regardless. I know some guys don't like SAM due to the sensor you have to attach to the club and I'm not sure if that give ball info unlike Quintic does. Again either system with a knowledgeable fitter is miles and miles ahead of going to the local shop and rolling a few putts and walking out with a putter.

As mentioned putting statistically is the best part of my game but I'm working on improving it cause it can make a good round great and a bad round saveable.

As for lessons right now we've just been figuring out specs, building putters up and doing some drills. The coach I'm working with prefers to do a lot of work outside on actual greens but because I'm in Canada we'll probably be on turf and using Quintic to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong.

I don’t think my post brought up anything about how SAM/quintic fitting?
In the first part I literally said how there are posts around about hosel/toe hangs and info about those types. Just cause I’m not being overtly helpful and yes I kinda went left with my joke about his WRX membership, but I didn’t say anything “wrong” lol

besides I know matt is very knowledgeable with his putting and putter advice so I didn’t speak on anyone’s credibility other than saying to do some research and a joke/play on what the eyes can see.

Fair enough, all good then…I didn’t know you were joking.

I’ve actually tried some of the putters you listed…I bought an Odyssey White Hot #1, EVNROLL ER 1.2, and my gamer is a TM TP Collection Soto, all putters with plumber necks and fair amounts of toe hang.

I was asking for opinions about high-end putters specifically because I’m not as familiar with them, and it’s a lot of money to spend on something that isn’t a great fit and has to be re-sold.

I like the suggestions of getting a putter fitting though since I’ve definitely learned a lot from the Iron fitting and Driver fitting that I did this season, so makes sense that there’s lots to learn from putter fittings also.

For sure, I will! The first fitter I reached out to said he upgraded from the SAM system to the Capto system which he feels gives him more data.

Will reach out to TXG also and compare costs, services offered, and timelines for getting in for a fitting. We’ll see how it goes.

Well what are high-end putters to you?? Lol cause for me betti, SC, EVNRoll. Are high end, or do you mean those handmade joints like machine, Goodwood, Olson??

honestly the last time I was on SAM putt lab was back in 2012. I remember it told me strike point, and how much rotation was on the face. Fast forward to now, my friend got putter fitted at Carl’s and the SAM putt lab is much more sophisticated than when I used it. After a few putters and him trying those PXG putters. The putting lab metrics in real time and the fitter swapping out the screw weights in real time. He saw the face get more square and his metrics improved in real time. So you definitely can find out what you need in a detailed way.

That’s what I wrote in my OP, Scotty Cameron, Bettinardi, EVNROLL, Odyssey Toulon, or custom putters are all high-end to me.

That’s the whole point, I spent a pretty penny on the EVNROLL ER 1.2, but once I added a 2” extension to get it to 36” it felt like I was trying to stroke a sledgehammer. So from that experience I’m hesitant to pull out the credit card for a Scotty, Betti, or Toulon only for it to not be the right fit again.

Yeah Idk where you’re based at, but definitely check out any place that offers real putter fittings. Seems like others pointed in a good direction so if they’re anything like Carlgolfland then you’ll be plenty satisfied Frfr.

I live in the Toronto, Ontario area…we’re very lucky to have the top fitters in Canada here, TXG and Modern Golf.

I did a search for SAM locations though, and the person who worked with SAM in the past upgraded to the Capto system and works with the PGA of Canada.

I did a Driver fitting with TXG, an Iron fitting at Modern Golf, and I’m sure the coach from PGA Canada would be very good also…we’ll see who can fit me in!

For sure, I will! The first fitter I reached out to said he upgraded from the SAM system to the Capto system which he feels gives him more data.

Will reach out to TXG also and compare costs, services offered, and timelines for getting in for a fitting. We’ll see how it goes.

I have looked at that capto system a little online... I know the guy I used for my sam fitting now uses capto as well... maybe there is something to this lol

There is a local guy that has capto I thought about going in to see him... Problem is I went in for a iron fittting and I was not that happy... I love all the data points that these things spit out... The quintic does give ball roll and that is really interesting... Anything is better then walking in to the local golf store and purchasing a putter... Curious to follow your journey...

Definitely at your length you'll need to factor in head weight/swing weight and when I build my last putter John and I spent 20-30min just cutting, measuring, weighing, dry fitting and repeating until we got to a length and setup that was close to my gamer. Now I walked in with my putter in pieces and we could do that.

In your case you'll have your current putter but if you like 'x' about it but want to change 'y' or 'z' he can suggest other putters for that in the fitting, test it and give you a write up of what you need in a putter. But at 36" I don't know what they have but can use a 35" putter at the swing weight you need.

The other coach you're talking about I know exactly who you're talking about and he's an ambassador for a brand called T-Squared. Not saying you have to buy one of their putters but their fitting set up is modular so he can build you hundreds of setups and find what you want.
